Well, I have ADSL with Ameritech, but there is a catch. I use an ATM card
to connect from the ADSL "Modem" to the computer (not ethernet). Also,
the biggest catch so far is that Ameritech uses a crazy dialup script to
logon to the network. I havent yet taken the time to try to figure out
how to get this to work in Linux. (there were enough problems in win98).
For now I connect with win98 and use NAT32 to share my DSL connection with
Linux. It's not the way I would prefer to do it, but it's worked ok for
the past 2 months.

Ref: KPPP frustration...
This doesn't help...but, many of us have
"been there - done that"...hang in there!
A few things:
Have you checked with your ISP and found out
which method of viewing your efforts to connect
they use: PAP or CHAP...if it is CHAP then they
might well have a script to use...if so, I can help
you with where it goes, formats, and other
relevant files that need to be set up...4 weeks
ago I stumbled through all this...I now know it
by "heart"...I made "every-mistake"...ooh, how
many times did I mumble "Who needs this"?
Your ISP seem to be hiding...some have implemented
a package and have no idea what to tell you without
referring to their vendor. Ask him to do that!
Being with AT&T, I was fortunate to have access to
a bundle of Worldnet Newsgroups...right down to a site
that addresses Unix-Linux detailed instructions on how
to connect! Plus, all the complaints of those that are
making clerical errors, etc. They even addressed my
particular distribution of Mandrake-Redhat..All this
from an ISP! Copies of the external script I needed
to connect to AT&T was readily available..with
cautionary notes! Plus, all the hints of other users!
Mind you, some ISP's really don't want to talk to you if
you're not $MS...they will come around...but not yet!
I think Earthlink also has some Linux scripts to
connect...a number of ISP's do. Mind you the term
"script" is confusing...there is the basic parameters
you can add in KPPP and then there is the external
"script" you put in a file designed for them and are
automatically referenced when you put "chap" in
KPPP screen parameter.
Follow the "Yellow-Brick-Road" below! It might help!
Here goes!!
You've got to have a file called:
/etc/ppp/chap-secrets
(your password and ISP name plus an ISP password)
(..this dictated by your ISP as to format)
AT&T example:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] "*" "xxxxxx-xxxxxx"
(xxxxxx-xxxxxx parameter is the password designated by AT&T)
That is just one line in chap-secrets.
Now...next file to contend with is:
/etc/resolv.conf (note it is resolv)
In this file, we put something like the following:
domain worldnet.att.net
search worldnet.att.net
nameserver 204.127.160.1
nameserver 204.129.169.2
Of course, substitute your ISP name for worldnet..
and, your server lookup addresses.
Now...the next file to contend with:
/usr/sbin/ppp-on
In this file your script from your ISP
if you're using CHAP...
In this file you'll see something like this:
#!/usr/bin/perl
This must stay there..it is relevant to system file
operations, even though it seems commented
out by the #...it is relevant..must be first!
after that you would enter a beginning like this:
$DOMAIN="worldnet.att.net";
...This would continue with "script" given
to you by your ISP..my script has 20 commands!
Based on what you've said...you're not "shaking hands"
with your ISP in a fashion he expects. This implies that
some of the simplistic script in KPPP might well do.
Under KPPP in the Mandrake edition is a series of
examples to initiate the ISP handshake to pass along
pass words, etc. I tried them all...in my case they
didn't work..AT&T expected more in its format!
Because you're not able to "shake" hands with
him...the time-outs occur...do try to discover if
your ISP uses a PAP or CHAP method...critical stuff!
Hope this helps a bit...and to others that might be
browsing through. Good Luck!
Leonard...
P.S. There are lists on LINUX friendly ISP's.
I also have a list of files and programs to
issue a chmod on...gets the permission
situation resolved. On some distributions
pppp won't talk due to permission issues.

I've been reading them into Applix Graphics. It's relatively
primitive but you can read and create basic slides.
Applixware is a commercial package widely available for many unixes.
Rumor has it Linus Torvalds runs Microsoft powerpoint under
a software product called "wine (acronym for WINE Is Not an Emulator)".

Some people like xfig. It's often included with the X Window System.

Corel Wordperfect 8 and Applix Words do this pretty well.
There is a freeware utility called catdoc that can extract the text.
Sometimes the strings(1) utility does a better job, though.

I sometimes think this is some kind of childish superiority game.
If you don't know what "get enlightenment" means, you are not in
the club. But it's really just haste. The folks who write this
stuff have better things to do than make it easy to find.

There's supposed to be a Linux Software Map someplace. Good luck.
Meanwhile, try the package search (not the Web site search; that doesn't
work) at www.debian.org, or www.freshmeat.org or www.redhat.com

Folks,
I have installed Adobe Acrobat Reader on my Linux Mandrake system,

Similar thing happens with WordPerfect 8 that I installed (i.e. it
segfaults in

I am rather a novice with Linux, but I've heard that such problems may
be due
to using wrong versions of libc/glibc. I apparently have libc.so.5.3.12.
Does anybody know how to fix this? Thanks.

I have the 2.2.11-2 kernel, the RPM from rpmfind.net. I'm not sure
that's enabled. But X locked on me again, because of netscape I think,
and I tried all the combinations. ctrl-alt-sysrq-s, ctrl-alt-sysrq-o
and ctrl-alt-sysrq-b and nothing worked.
I tried to telnet to my machine from another over the net and I couldn't
connect. It's like the whole machine was froze. The only thing I could
do was wait a while and shut the power off. Not good.
Is there any other, or any, safegaurd to a locked up box? This is not
good and there's got to be a way out when it locks. I just did a fresh
install, upgraded to the newer kernel and spent the whole day doing
upgrades to prevent this from happening and it still happens.
Does anyone have any ideas on this?

I am looking for a fairly simple chat program that I can use under linux.
I don't know a lot abour IRC (read nothing), but I thought that was what it
was.
All I want is something for a few users on a basically a local net (though
a couple may be coming in via a PPP line.
I was hoping to run a IRC server because I saw some interesting chat-bots
that would run on it (things are a little boring while waiting for a
re-compile).
The IRC servers I checked (from daemon/irc on freshmeat) all seem to want to
link to some other server.
Where can I find simple instructions on installing an isolated irc server?
I did some checking on Altavista, but was deludged with Windoze IRC client
info.
Also, if this is not going to work, can someone suggest something that might?

First, check out news.vmware.com.
Second, try host-only-networking in combination with IP-masquerading,=20
it is much more straight-forward to set up and will give you a bit=20

Get cdrecord version 1.8. This version supports DAO (disk-at-once)
recording. DAO means the laser is never stopped during recording,
and you will eliminate the 2-second gaps. Your command line will
look something like the following:
cdrecord dev=0,0 speed=2 -v -multi -audio -dao <track1 track2 ...>
~~~
Note, your CD-R drive must be able to support DAO. Not all do.
I've got a roller mouse that works nicely under Linux/X, with one
How do I do this?
(Why is it counter intuitive? When I click and hold the middle "button",
I pull the mouse toword me to scroll down, and push it away from me to
scroll up. When using the wheel, I roll the wheel away from me to
scroll down and roll it toword me to scroll up. Exact opposites. It took
me a while to figure out why it made no sense to me, but that's why.)
Not sure if an adapter exists, unless you mean putting this SCA
device on your LVD chain, which ain't a very good idea--turns your
LVD chain into a SCA chain :-(
What your friend probably wants (and it ain't free) is a LVD host
with a SCSI-2 port on it too, like a Tekram DC 390U2W (cheaper than
an Adaptec solution, and *at least* as good). I've got one, and think
it's great.
Alternatively, try putting a second (SCSI-2) host in the box for that
disk.
I'm not doing very well here - I can't even get Hello World to work! I
can't find stdio.h on my system (RedHat 5.2). I've queried the gcc RPM
package installed and it doesn't seem to include it. The I checked out
installed. So I thought...mmmm.perhaps to include <stdio.h> I need the
source. I downloaded and installed the glibc src rpm and still no
stdio.h.
Help! I'm going mad! This must be sooooo obvious. All documentation I
read seems to assume that this is already set up, but obviously on my
Has anyone succeeded in getting an Acard SCSI adapter to
work with kernel 2.2.x.
During booting the kernel gets stuck, and reports a
timeout when checking for the SCSI device (a ZIP drive
in this case)
You need an X Windows client for you Windows 98 machine.
I have redhat 6.0 installed and it came with netscape 4.51. It's always
crashing whenever anything that has to do with java is on the website
I'm trying to access. How can I fix this. Thanks.
Subject: Help! Need crypt(1) for Linux.
Date: 25 Aug 1999 21:04:02 GMT
I have some files I encrypted with the crypt(1) command under SunOS. I no
longer have access to Sun machines and need to now decrypt the files. Is there
a Sun compatible crypt program available for Linux? Thanks.
