Yep. `chmod 644 ~/.plan` should fix it.

No, it is NOT possible. Their server is set up so that only Outlook and
Outlook Express can access email. It has someting to do with the
authentication protocol they are using.

Date: Tue, 8 Jun 1999 08:13:37 GMT

Just compiled a 2.2.5 kernel for use with my SuSE 6.0 system and have discovered an
odd thing. I have a crappy socket 7, PCChips Mobo (M572) which quite definately only
has one CPU. However, when I try to boot from a kernel with NO SMP support built in,
the system gets to "Uncompressing kernel. Linux is now loading" and hangs
indefinately. Putting SMP support into the kernel solves this everytime.

Does anyone know why this should happen or how I can cure it?

Thanks in advance

Hey,

grep -E 'pattern1|pattern2|pattern3' file_list (or egrep, if it's there)

finds all lines in file_list containing one of the three patterns.

Subject: SBLive locks up system!

I've just compiled a 2.2.5 kernel to use with my SuSE 6.0 system and as a consequence
also managed to get my SBLive Value card working....sort of.

I'm using the latest beta drivers from creative, and had to manually install them.
After an "insmod soundcore; insmod -f sblive" the sound seems to work fine. It will
play back WAVs with KDE's media player. However, any other attempt to play sound (KDE
system events, games etc) causes the entire system to lock up, requiring a reset
button press.

Anyone know why this should be so?

The only thing I can think of is that I had to compile the kernel with SMP support
(see another post) and the drivers say they are compatible only with non-SMP
kernels....

Thanks in advance

thisi a quite simply false, of course. the problem is that winmodem
vendors refuse to document their products. since without this
documetation, their products are glorified sound effect cards,
they do not currently work with Linux. they COULD, but don't.

Have you tried g77? It comes with the egcs package(s) and compiles
directly, without converting to C. It works for me on RH5.2.

I have not tried fort77 myself.

the problem / cure. As I have worked around my problem, I'm not bothered

edit your etc/inittab and change a line that looks something like:

to
id:3:*&%^$#

this line will be after the lines that tell the different runlevels and give

Got the answer.

Changing the mtu only doesn't help.

On my setup I've also set the mru to 576.
This was the setup for the ppp0
location /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0
This is the maximum recieve unit.

You can't set mru with ifconfig , only mtu.
So I edited the ifcfg file to use an mtu and mru of 1500
same as the ethernet card and all worked well.
(both where 576 the optimum for demon.nl)

Thanks for the suggestions.

First off I'm running RH 6.0 with pppd version 2.3.7. My ISP is running

Hey there.

Here's the deal: I used to have a dual boot box (Win98 and Linux on separate
drives) and LILO worked just nicely.

Now, I have also installed BeOS onto a separate partition and the LILO got
replaced by the BeOS boot manager which boots both Be and Win just OK but
fails as far as Linux is concerned.

It detected all my Linux partitions (swap and two native ones) and lists
them in the boot options menu. The problem is neither of them boots. I get
the following error message: "Loading Linux native. Boot sector signature
not found"

What do you think would be a better solution for triple boot: LILO or the
BeOS boot loader? How can I restore LILO (I currently cannot acces Linux at
all)

Please, copy your replies to my e-mail.

It seems that you have your PPP connection well established, but you
did not sent or received anything, therefore the connection was closed...

If you tried to send (or receive) anything, this is another case...

If your server is a bit slow, you can try to add to your 'chat' file :

  lcp-max-configure 30

(into the line where 'modem' 'noipdefault' and 'crtscts' are...)

kind of late to the thread but my prob with Disk Druid has been it's
seeming inability to format swap space unless that space has already
been formatted with another OS. There has been several times that
I've had installs crash after copying just about enough files to fit
into my swap. I eventually figured out that if I format that partition
with NT and then delete it and recreate it in Disk Druid it formats it
ok and the install proceeds without a hitch.

My job is (amongst other things) writing a server[*] in Java. My
experience shows that for server applications, Java is around 40% of
the speed of highly optimised C, but with a much larger memory
footprint. These measurements were taken with 1.1.7 so it is even
possible that things may have improved even further now.

Hmm. I wonder why, since 2.0 is completely useable on an Ultra5 with
128MB of memory (my development platform.) Somehow, Motif manages to
conspire to be even slower than Java...

Winmodems simply won't work under Linux, as nobody has been able to write
a driver so far (and probably won't before a long time as the winmodem
makers seem reluctant to release programming info about them).
Apart from that your system should work just fine as a standalone
