Sigh...I didn't say it would block other tasks (in any sense of the term
"block"); in fact, the fact that it doesn't under Unix was the point of the
discussion. Also, I said "any OS", not "any hardware", with the implication
being competitors to Windows. Reading a floppy probably doesn't particularly
tax a Commodore 64 CPU either, because it comes with its own washing machine
for that. Of course the problem can be solved - part of the point was that
it's not interesting or useful enough to be worth it any longer.
"CPU-intensive" just meant that you have an unbuffered or barely-buffered
serial device that acts like a crying baby when you want to read from it - you
can't ignore it. On a current system this probably isn't a big deal, because
floppies are slow and CPUs are fast, but for the time that the floppy driver
is in charge, it's really in charge. I probably should have said "interrupt-
intensive" - I need to look over the source again.
>pc FDC has two modes of operation: polled and interrupt, unfortunately BIOS
>uses POLLED mode and windows seems to do the same
>PC FDC supports interrupt on disk change but no OS supports it, why ?
Actually, doing polled I/O would tend to make the device more friendly (but
slower) in terms of getting in the user's way. I expect Windows doesn't work
that way, just cause it sucks so bad (might be wrong, though, it has plenty of
other reasons to suck - hey, I just inflated the sucks-vs-rules index :).
ObFreeBSD sidenote: I once replaced a 486/33 dialup server using a Digiboard
under Linux with FreeBSD 2.2.5 - Linux at the time lacked poll(2) (I think 2.2
finally has it, so that's cool), and the serial board interrupts brought the
machine to its knees. Using the FreeBSD polled digi driver it chugs along
quite nicely. Admittedly there's a lot more buffering there than in a floppy
controller. :)

Well , the dj850 driver is a third party driver for ghostscript.
You can get the sources from
http://www.erdw.ethz.ch/~bonk/hp850/hp850.html
and you have to recompile ghostscript from sources to get the driver
into ghostscript.

Hello,
I'm looking for a reference for Bash shell scripts on the web.
Specifically, I'm trying to debug this script:
#!/bin/sh
#
# Set the ORA_HOME to be equivalent to the ORACLE_HOME
# from which you wish to execute dbstart and
# dbshut
# set ORA_OWNER to the user id of the owner of
# the Oracle database in ORA_HOME
ORA_HOME=/usr/app/oracle/product/8.0.5
ORA_OWNER=oracle
if [! -f $ORA_HOME/bin/dbstart -o ! -d $ORA_HOME]
then
echo "Oracle startup: cannot start"
exit
fi
case "$1" in
'start')
# Start the Oracle databases:
su - $ORA_OWNER -c $ORA_HOME/bin/dbstart &
;;
The line "if [! -f $ORA_HOME/bin/dbstart -o ! -d $ORA_HOME]" is being

This script was part of the Oracle install... grrr

What's the best tasting fruit: Apples, Pears, Oranges, or Bananas?
If it's not in the FAQ's, it should be added.
Maybe we should all answer: Best? In What Way?
Or maybe someone should just set up a "Best" distro of Linux, maybe
at www.BestLinux.com and we could send them all there.
Then hire a guy name Best to be the webmaster.

You need a space between the [] and any other character
if [ ! -f $ORA_HOME/bin/dbstart -o ! -d $ORA_HOME ] ....
You may debug bash script by adding the line "set -x".
This prints to your terminal any line when it is executed, until
the end of the script or a "set +x" line.

Yes, the 850 should work well with either the cdj850 driver or the
hpdj driver. The older "standard" Ghostscript drivers have less
support for HP's resolution enhancement modes.
You should be able to find a contrib RPM or whatever than includes one
or both of these drivers. (I know that the standard Debian package
includes at least one, so I guess you're not on Debian).

Subject: RH Linux: Bizarre wtmp/utmp, log file, and file date problems
Crossposted-To: comp.security.unix
In all my years of UNIX sys admin experience I have never seen something
so bizarre as this happen, first seen this morning on my Red Hat 5.2
Linux system:
- New logins are no longer being reported with 'w', 'who', and 'last'
commands. Entries are being made to utmp/wtmp but I haven't verified if
they're correct. Rotating/removing these files doesn't help either.
- /var/log/secure is no longer being logged to (scary).
- The system date as reported by 'date' and last mod dates on new files
on all filesystems differ by exactly 5 hours, the file being 5 hours in
the future. Maybe this has something to do with EST timezone?
- The MAIL env var is being set to /spool/mail/login instead of the
proper /var/spool/mail/login. This causes mail apps to fail to find the
users incoming mail spool. Resetting this variable manually fixes
things.
Things I've tried doing to fix the problems:
- Rebooting the system (but not power cycling, it's remote).
- Messing with wtmp/utmp to manually reset their status.
- Moving the latest /var/log/secure file and restarting syslogd. The
entry for authpriv.* remains in /etc/syslogd.conf and other syslog files
are still working file.
- Resetting the date manually (timezone is correct).
The only things that make be believe that this might be a security
attack is the fact that /var/log/secure no longer works AT ALL and that
I can't get a traditional list of current logins any more. The other
things I could pass as a fluke or bug in the system. But I have found
nothing else out of the ordinary. The future file date issue is
terribly inconvenient, as well as the fact that I can't get a list of
current logins.
I found nothing on the Red Hat web site regarding these specific
issues. I did find a new syslogd there, but the fixes don't seem to
address specificically the problems with no security logs.
Any ideas? I'm at the edge of my wit...

Subject: Re: bzlilo compile Kernel 2.2.3 error (please help)
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 21:19:19 GMT
Ooops,
I think what you did was to take the linux_2.2.3 source, and untar it in
the /usr/src directory. If you did this without moving linux, or unlinking it
to linux_2.0.36, then what happened is that tar extracted the 2.2.3 source
straight into the linux directory, which is a sym link to linux_2.0.36 on
most distros. This will overright some of the original source, and leave
behind some of the old source. The end result is usually a source tree that
won't compile. To fix this, remove the old source tree, re-install it from
your distro, then move linux_2.2.3 to a safe directory, and then untar it.
Make the kernel, run the kernel, and if you are sure you want the upgrade,
then link /usr/src/linux to the 2.2.3 source tree.
Here is an example of commands
# cd /usr/src
# ls
linux linux_2.0.36 redhat
# file linux
linux: symbolic link to linux_2.0.36
# cp /home/linux_2.2.3.tar.gz /usr/src
# pwd
/usr/src
# mv linux linux_old_source
# ls
linux_old_source linux_2.0.36 linux_2.2.3.tar.gz redhat
# tar xvfz linux_2.2.3.tar.gz
# ls
linux linux_old_source linux_2.0.36 linux_2.2.3.tar.gz redhat
# file linux
linux/: Directory
# cd linux
# make xconfig
........ You know the rest.

Is this 5120 _bytes_???!!! This just cant be right, theres no way to
fit a Linux kernel into 5KB, no matter how much you take out. You sure
made a mistake somewhere in the config/compilation process.

cd /usr/src/linux
make mrproper
make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
make zImage
make modules
make modules_install
make zlilo??? (can anyone help with the Lilo stuff,
/sbin/lilo??? Im using Loadlin myself :-)
That should get you some good, clean kernel, to the best of my
knowledge ... heh, a full Linux kernel in 5KB, cool - if you really
can do this, my guess would be that Linus will personally come by
and set up Lilo for you. ;-)

I have 3 Corrollary smp Systems that I am able to load Red Hat Linux 5.2
on. The problem comes in when I need to access the Global Ram. The
Global memory is physically separate from the processor boards. My
memory board contain 64 megabytes of memory. The Corrolary smp systems
have a ISA-based AT controller that has 16 megabytes. Then the systems
ISA-based system is a bridge to the C-bus architecture. This allows AT
bus DMA boards direct access to the 64 megabyte C-bus memory.
My problems is that Linux only reconginzes the 16 megs and not the 64
megs. I have tried the mem=64m. But the server dumps on bootup.
Any suggestions or solutions would greatly be appreciated.

Subject: RH5.2, SoundBlaster and mpg123
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 20:54:34 GMT
Hello everyone,
At work I have a Pentium 160 (not MMX) and I'm using RH5.2.
I installed an old 8-bit SoundBlaster card (ISA) in this machine
and got it working using 'sndconfig'. It works fine with
'soxplay' (.au files) and 'xplaycd'.
But when I try to play
.mp3 files using mpg123 (which I downloaded as an RPM from
linuxberg) I do not get any error messages, but the sound
is completely scrambled (it is not static, but literaly
sounds like scrambled communication - lot of intermittent
hi-pitch sounds and no music content). The same files work
fine at home (Pentium200MMX+RH5.2+Ensoniq AudioPCI).
Does mpg123 support 8-bit play-back? or is it something
to do with the sound driver (currently installed as module)?
Many thanks.

Subject: Announcing the release of GNU CSSC-0.10beta.pl0, an SCCS clone
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 10:50:13 -0500
Version 0.10beta.pl0 of CSSC is now available by FTP from
alpha.gnu.org in the directory /pub/gnu/CSSC. There is a (faster)
mirror at ftp://sunsite.doc.ic.ac.uk/Mirrors/alpha.gnu.org/pub/gnu/CSSC/.
CSSC is a work-alike for the traditional source control program "SCCS".
I'm happy to announce the arrival of version 0.10 of CSSC, which has
been promoted from alpha to beta status. This promotion is long
overdue, and I am doing it now because I'd like to make a public
release fairly soon and a jump straight from alpha to released status
would look a little bizarre.
As for actual changes since the last version (CSSC-0.09alpha.pl4),
this version now compiles under C++ compilers other than GCC. At the
moment this has only been tested with the EPC compiler, but not many
changes were required for this, so I think it's quite likely that CSSC
will now compile with a selection of other C++ compilers.
I am very interested in any results with C++ compilers other than
GCC. Please advise me of your findings!
Many thanks to all those who have helped so far.
I'd also still like to know about features that are needed but not
provided. If you have an outstanding bug report that hasn't been
fixed, that probably means that the problem has slipped my mind.
Please remind me.

Just as one would expect. ;-) There should be a space between the
[ and the !. [ is actually a command, its a shorthand for
test, both of which come as ordinary binaries in /usr/bin and
as bash builtins:
TK212017089010:~$ ls -l `which [` `which test`
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Mar 15 13:08 /usr/bin/[ -> test*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root bin 29312 Jun 16 1997 /usr/bin/test*
TK212017089010:~$ man bash
[ ... ]
test expr
[ expr ]
Return a status of 0 or 1 depending on the evalua
tion of the conditional expression expr. Expres
[ ... ]
And I could swear youre missing a couple of ; and { and }
at some places as well. So, to answer the original question,
the following structure should work:
if [ ! -f $ORA_HOME/bin/dbstart -o ! -d $ORA_HOME] ;
then {
echo "Oracle startup: cannot start";
exit; }
fi
Or, alternatively:
if test ! -f $ORA_HOME/bin/dbstart -o ! -d $ORA_HOME ;
then {
echo "Oracle startup: cannot start";
exit; }
fi

I agree, this shouldnt happen with a commercial grade product.

Subject: crypt & passwd.c
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 20:12:11 GMT
Hi,
Doing some programming (actually on HP-UX 11) but at the moment i can get
anything to compile on Linux (2.0.37) with crypt - i keep getting
/tmp/cca049041.o(.text+0x33): undefined reference to 'crypt'
not being ofay with writing/compiling c on linux and i have no idea what this
is ...
also i would like to know where to find the passwd.c source for the linux
/usr/bin/passwd program. however the one i have found is just a token updater
rather than the 'full' program.
