It might help if you could tell us if your CLASSPATH is set. You can do this
in your /etx/profile

export CLASSPATH=./:/usr/local/java/lib/classes.zip (relative to where java
lives)

That's because it's buggy. I've heard of this problem over and over.

PowerQuest supposedly has a 30 day trial version of Partition Magic available
for free download. Folk who've used it say it's fully functional. (I bought
the full version & have only used it for whacking off chunks of a disk that
were going bad, but it seems to work well.) I think it's something obvious
like www.powerquest.com :)

The FDISK in DR/OpenDOS works well and has some advantages over M$DOS's
FDISK. For one thing it doesn't try to insist that the 2nd HD has to
be bootable. You can download the entire OpenDOS package -- check out
www.caldera.com (I think there's a new URL, someone can probably cough
it up)

Don't know about FreeDOS other than last time I went by there, they had
info to the effect it was up to about DOS3.2 level. Looking forward to a
modernized version :)

Hi,

I'm working for a bank and who are currently looking at changing the
client and server operating systems in their branch network.

The choice is between Linux and NT (Workstation/Server).

Needless to say the techies want Linux, but management are nervous
about it (vendor FUD, etc., etc.).

So, are there any retail banks that have already rolled out (or are
currently rolling out) Linux to between 4000 and 5000 seats in 400 to
500 outlets?

All info and/or pointers are welcome!

TIA

If you compressed it before tarring it you're s.o.l. unless you're a
magician.
You have to have *all* of a compressed or gzipped file to uncompress it, as
I understand things. If the floppy is "bad" that means at least one block
is not retrievable. You might still get it all off with a suitable program
that tries to read each block repeatedly and tries to get lucky.

One reason not to compress for long-term storage... although things like dat
dds2&3 do compression while mitigating its effects on reliabilty.

I noticed below that your modem is on COM2, wouldn't this be /dev/cua1?

This is generally indicitive of an IRQ conflict. Do you have a built-in
COM port set to COM4? They tend to go to IRQ3 and conflict with COM2.

Actually, Ghostview and GV are different programs. Ghostview is
older, and the command is "ghostview". GV is a lot better (and based on
ghostview), and the command is gv.

'make' is a kind of scripting language peolpe use to compile large
projects. It reads a file, usually called 'Makefile', to know what to
do. I don't know what error you got, so I don't know how to help you.
If it gave you a 'bash: make not found' error, then make is not in your
$PATH or not on your machine. If it couldn't find the Makefile, it will
say 'make: No Targets. Stop.'

BTW, you are typing it in all lowercase, right?

The first line of the script is:

#!/bin/sh

/bin/sh is actually a link to bash (/bin/sh -> bash)

ls -al /usr/sbin/ppp-on says:

lrwxrwxrwx   1 root   root   15 Feb 13 09:21  ppp-on -> /etc/ppp/ppp-on

ls -al /etc/ppp/ppp-on says:

-rwx------ 1 root root 15 Feb 13 09:17 /etc/ppp/ppp-on

In the ppp-on script, I have:

DIALER_SCRIPT=/etc/ppp/ppp-on-dialer

then, later:

exec /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/ttyS1 115200 connect $DIALER_SCRIPT

ttyS1 is correct (I'm on COM1 and minicom has confirmed that)
/usr/sbin/pppd is correct.

I could paste the entire contents of my scripts here, but I was hoping it
would be a lot easier of a question than that.

I'll do that if I need to. Thanks,

I also work for a bank in tech support area and would be interested in
the answer to that question. The bank I work for is about the same size
as the one mentioned, but I haven't heard of any other banks using Linux
as a main OS. Currently we have a mixture of OS/2, WIN 3.11, WIN NT,
running Novell servers and some NT servers as well.

Further, if you look under the contrib directory, you'll notice that a
complete glib header package has been assembled, to allow compilation of of
glib apps. However, once you do that, you won't be able to compile with the
libc5 libs again.

I have a LAN connected to an ISP via an ISDN router. In order to avoid
having the ISDN line up 24 hours a day, I try to limit the number of
dial-ups to a minimum.

To get mail for a number of local users, I use fetchmail to collect mail
from the ISP on a fixed schedule (fecthmail -dxxx). The linux server is set
up as mailserver, with sendmail running in deferred mode, i.e. it processes
the queue in given intervals _only_. This is to avoid that sendmail connects
to the ISP everytime some local user sends a mail. The problem with this
setup is that it also affects local mail; i.e. if I send a mail to the guy
in the next office, he will not get it until the next queue run.

This kind of batch send/receive is OK for external mail, but how do I make
sendmail deliver _local_ mail right away and queue external mail?

Well, GNOME is not really something for new users. I myself know how to
install software on Linux and even work around some minor problems when
they happen. I have been unable to install GNOME, its a terrible
setup...I was able to FORCE the rpms that came with RedHat 5.2 onto that
system, but actually installing it on my system is like repetedly
running into a brick wall...I stopped. I recomend you give KDE a try
instead, you will find it much easier to install and it is a better
system. I used KDE for quite a while and only had troubles with it in a
couple of the snapshots I tried and Beta4.

Thanks for responding. Since I thought (hoped) that the problem would be
quite standard, I thougt not to bother anyone with all the details of the
setup of my PC. Anyhow, here are some more details.
Hardware:
Pentium 166 (overdrive) (Packard Bell)
40Mb Ram
3.2 Gb HD (IDE)
partitions:
DOS/LXswap(100Mb)/DOS/DOS/LX/LX(800Mb)
(ISDN IS64hp, Modem Aztech Sound Galaxy, Printer Lexmark 5700 all not
configured yet)

Software:
LINUX 2.0.36 (SuSE 6.0)
Installed with YAST (standard configuration)
used GUI KDE

Being rather unfamiliar with the system I tried to get some diagnostics out
of it:
hdparm -c -> 16-bit HD access on all drives
swapon -s = /proc/swaps: no such file or directory
meminfo ->
37 of 38Mb RAM used (most allocated to 'shared')
    10 of 96Mb swap used
When all programs are closed (except KDE and Kmemmon) this picture does not
change (just a bit of swap is released).

Starting up the system is deadly slow. I have not timed it, but I think
starting up netscapes takes approx 1-2 minutes and the HD is over active.

Would this give sufficiently more info to advise me on how to solve the
problem?

Thanks in advance.

Explorer is not the gui... it's merly an application used to start other
apps with and multiple instances of it self when browsing files etc.
you can easily replace explorer as a shell but that doesn't mean you have a
new gui, just another program launcher. Win95 and WinNT4 even comes with an
alternate shell application. you might remember it - it's called program
manager.

It seems that you don't know as much as you would like to brag about.

By any chance, is there some UDMA thing which you could enable?
After I got a kernel with "on-board UDMA" support, my hard drive works
twice as fast. (Quantum EX hard drive on PA 2013 motherboard; with UDMA
enabled, hdparm gives reads of 12.6MB/s).

I had the same problem and I solved it by using a serial mouse.

In his obvious haste, Luck IT consulting (Sascha Luck) <[EMAIL PROTECTED]!spam> babbled
thusly:
: Hi,

: SuSE - Linux is a POS worse than (almost) anything by MS! Anyone ever
: tried to compile non-suse-adapted code on it [1] or install non-suse
: RPMs[2]? Everything is so much "adapted" that nothing runs w/o a major
: rewrite. At least windows allows you to install non-MS software on
: it...

: I'll be moving to RedHat. I just hope _that_ behaves like a true linux.

I've had very few problems (apart from the off library problem which is
easily rectifiable...).

Subject: Problems with ftape after kernel update
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello everybody,

recently I tried to update my 2.0.36 kernel (SuSE Linux 6.0) with
kernel 2.2.3. Everything went fine execpt ftape: when I wanted to
write or read something to /dev/ftape I got an error message ("illegal
operation" or something like this?). Rewinding or retensioning with
mt does work. Also, there is no error message in /var/log/messages
or /proc/ftape. Its funny, under kernel 2.0.36 I DID get lot`s of
error messagess but in fact ftape worked fine. Any hint would be
appreciated!

Dirk
