Me, too, but it's been one of those annoyances I hadn't bothered to try
to fix. Your question prompted me to look for a solution. I found the
following in the tips.txt doc file for version 5.3:

Switching screens in an xterm *xterm-screens* *xterm-save-screen*

    ...

NOTE 2: If you want to disable the screen switching, and you don't want to
change your termcap, you can add these lines to your .vimrc:
    > :set t_ti= t_te=

I haven't tried this myself yet. Although I have access to the
documentation, I don't have my Linux system running right now. You may
have noticed that 'less' has the same "feature." It can be disabled by
putting the following line in your ~/.bash_profile:

    export LESS=-X

I _have_ done that and it works fine.

It sounds like you are running Enlightenment WM with the ripple effect
turned on. You can turn it off from the descktop menu. Middle button
click on desktop: Menu->Desktop->FX - Ripples. This selection will
toggle ripples on and off.

You can give them these options:

1. Open up POP and IMAP on Exchange (no cost).
2. Have Exchange route your mail to your Linux computer (no
    cost).
3. Replace Exchange with a better, less expensive mail server
(high setup costs, but lower ongoing costs in the long run).
4. Buy you another computer just to run Microsoft Outlook
(probably about $900 if you access it with VNC, more if
you get another monitor to go with it).
5. Accept that you will be less productive because you will
not be able to give timely response to urgent email that
is sent to you and/or you will have to disrupt your work
to reboot just to read email (very costly if your work is
of any value to the organization).

If they choose #5, maybe they are trying to tell you something...

Write a script to run the program. Include some errorchecking, in
case the program for some reason doesn't work correctly. If there's
an error, you want to be sure that the user can't fall through to a
shell. I just make `exit' the last line in the script.

Exec this script from the appropriate login file in the user
directory, e.g., .bashrc or .login.

For example, I have a user `journal' that I use for writing in my
journal. I log in as journal, give the password, and the .bashrc for
that account looks like this:

# .bashrc

/home/journal/journal
exit

Note the `exit' line. This assures that when I exit from the
`journal' script, I immediately exit from the account. The journal
script does some processing in addition to calling my editor.

There are some other things you probably want to do that I didn't do.
One is to disable ^Z in the program you're planning to run. I suspect
this a compile time option. There may be other shell processes that a
user can run from within the program, as well.

If he has two identical copies of the disk, both bad (which seemed to

That's what I would try first, anyway.

You can send us your detailed requirements. We will provide you the

Linux could be set up as a transparent gateway with lots of protocol
supports. BTW, don't worry about your money. We will do it for FREE...:)

WHat do you want to do? PPP to internet? then you can still use the
regular scripts that you always use. A lot of of people who come in
from the windows world are used to the fact that you never have to type
anything to get things to work.(programs are started using icons and
never from a command line,,well almost never) In Linux you still have to
use the shell command line,,even in X windows (allthough you CAN setit
up to have Icons for things also). As to connecting to the internet.
look at www.worldvisions.ca/wvdial makes things a LOT easier ;)

Good luck :)

Try this:

mount -o rw -t vfat [device] [mount point]

example... here's how I did it for one of my FAT 32 partitions...
mount -o rw -t vfat /dev/hda5 /mnt/wind

also, be advised that I have kernel 2.0.36... you'll need a fairly
recent kernel (2.0.34 or later) to make this work...

Just out of curiosity. Have you tried to blow out any visible particles
off the floppy surface ? Seriously, this saved my butt many times. Or
you may want to try it in different drive..

> Questions:

What were the exact error messages you got ?

Can you at least list your tar archive on your floppy ? i.e. `tar tv` ?

I scan floppies for physical errors (bad sectors) with my own tool:

  rdwr -rv -e /dev/rfd0 2880K 9K

It will complain about unreadable blocks with their offsets (9K
multiple here). You can then narrow down those offsets with smaller
block size (e.g. 512).

`rdwr` available at http://members.xoom.com/rts101/tmp/rdwr_tar.Z
