Not sure how to use the DOS loader. Yes, you just need to turn on
scsi emulation. If it succeeds you should get messages about such and
such a device at lun 0...etc...You need these scsi support modules or
kernel parts:

ide-scsi
scsi
sr_mod
sg

also the module loop helps a lot in making images.

Your ide-scsi driver may not be getting loaded....or maybe it is not
working out. Do a dmesg and parse it for scsi messages when you load
sr_mod. Try to mount /dev/scd0....

There's VMWare, which runs Windows NT under Linux.

What are you running? Win95/98 or NT. I run NT, and dual booting NT/Linux
is easy. I let NT do the booting. I haven't tried Win95/Linux combo yet.
But I saw a mini-HowTo on my Caldera CD showing how to dual boot Linux with
different OS'es. Look under the /doc directory of your linux CD. These
mini-HowTo are short and to the point. No geeky talk from linux snobs.

BTW, I notice that linux access the h/d slower than NT, and the graphic
refreshing (like when you drag a window accross several other windows) under
linux is way slower than NT. Any of you notice this? I guess device
drivers under linux suck.

Nope, there's nothing in the syslog; the only noticeable problem is that
pings get a lot slower, and I have trouble connecting to my box from the
outside.

Of course it will work. You use another boot loader to get
there. I have done this for a couple of years. I have
linux loaded on /dev/hdc6 and have lilo there as well. I use
BootMagic and also the Win NT boot loader to get there
from Win 98 and Win NT, respectively.

You might get more answers if:

1. You didn't post to so many groups.

2. You checked that you spelled the groups' names correctly.

3. You used your real address so that people could write to you.

Newsgroups trimmed.

Many people have lesser graphics performance under XFree than under windows.
(This is however not always the case, I'm using a custom XFree for the Monster
Fusion, and though I haven't done any benchmarking, it feels faster than under
windows). If you want better performance, you could invest in the accellerated
X server. I've heard it gives about 25%-40% improvement.

hard disk access slowing down is not normal, either you have a very non-normal
hard disk/controller (hmm, so much for grammar), or you need to tweak it.
See man hdparm.

Another option is something like DosLinux
(http://www.tux.org/pub/tux/robotti/doslinux/), where you don't need to
repartition your drive.

Or, if you feel like waiting a bit, I'm working on a distro, EuLinux. It
uses a loopback device, like DosLinux does, to mount a standard ext2
filesystem on an existing dos partition. It'll probably be easier for a new
user to install, but has a long ways to go to catch up to DosLinux in terms
of 'finality'.

My system did not crash, the X-server refused to start properly after I
installed an upgraded gtk+ (v. 1.2.4) that I apparently had
misconfigured. Since I was using gdm to boot directly into X, I
couldn't find a way to regain control of the system, so I re-installed
the system. And yes, I did something silly, I didn't have a backup copy
of /etc ready to plug in after the re-installation.

As for the least of my worries, I have all the pieces picked up now
EXCEPT the modem, so I guess you could say that it WAS pretty low on my
priority list.

Now, all that aside, does anybody have a suggestion what I can do? As I
said, the system is now configured to send /dev/ttyS0 interrupts to irq
10, /dev/ttyS2 interrupts to irq 4. There doesn't appear to be an io
port conflict. The permissions are set right on all the /etc/ppp
scripts and on /dev/ttyS2. When I try using minicom to test dialing, I
get "You are already online. Hang up the line before dialing."

I suspect that the /dev/ttyS0 hardware is responding to the irqs
intended for /dev/ttyS2, but I haven't been able to find a way to move
/dev/ttyS2 to an unoccupied vector. Any help will be appreciated.
