Official redhat only comes with the small blue manual which can
also be bought separately for 15bux (Borders).

I'm not sure if this really matters, but the only way I could get RH to
mount my fat32 win partition was the mount it as
mount -t msdos /dev/win95 /mnt/win95 -t vfat wasn't working for me

The aha152x SCSI driver should work, although you may need to use
isapnptools to set up the card, and you may need to experiment with
different interrupt settings.

You'll need SANE v1.0 (http://www.mostang.com/sane/), and the
appropriate patch from http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~charter/snapscan.html
to take the Snapscan backend to v0.6.

Since the source code for Linux is freely available to anyone, you're
free to have a look and see for yourself. Microsoft might get away with
little hidden gadgets, but in Linux it's pretty tough to hide anything
when the whole world can see into your pajamas.

Your conspiricy theories just don't hold up in the world of Open Source
Software.

If you have access OSR5.0.x you can use dd with the iseek= argument
(documented as lseek=) to explicitly seek to a position on a file or
device. You could also try the conv=noerror arg. Don't know if that
would need to be combined with conv=sync to preserve spacing in the
output file. Don't know if linux dd supports the iseek and noerror
options.

You could do a similar thing in perl doing explicit lseek()/read()s
on the input and lseek()/write()s on the output.

Thanks for the help chmoding /var/spool/mail things are working again. Still
can't figure out why adding new users would trash things so much ( But this
is an old release )

Now if only I could figure out why sendmail will not accept incoming

There was a PPTP patch for ip_masq back in the 2.0.32 days (Spring '98). It
worked fine then and our company needed it to connect MS engineers back to
the home office in Redmond. At the time it was the only way to do PPTP
through a firewall (or so they told me).

Is gdbm really the best choice anymore? It seems to not be supported much
really. I get the impression that using berkeley "db" might be a better
starting point. At least there you get sorted indexes in addition to the
hashing that gdbm/dbm use.

To be honest, I've not looked over the JMS specification in great detail,
but I suspect it's designed primarily for Java usage only. However, there
have always been C++ libraries and/or CORBA interfaces that could wrap such

future that could easily change.

I am having trouble with ghostview (gv) In particular, the window which
is opened is larger than the screen size (1024x768) and the text
displayed in teh ghostview window does not scroll at all. Ie if I shrink
the size of the window for ghostview, the amount of text displayed
shrinks, and there is no way I can see the rest of the page. (The

On my old machine I have a pre-"EnergyStar" BIOS, but use a
hardware device from IBM ("Display Miser") that simply cuts
power to the monitor after a user-defined time without any
keystrokes. On my new machine, I have the APM services
running to put the monitor into "sleep" mode after a period
of time, and eventually cut the power to the monitor if no
further user activity it detected on the console. The
system itself remains up all the time to handle remote
telnet, ftp, X, etc. but the monitor only gets power when it
is needed.
