Subject: A silly question about modem
Date: Sat, 12 Jun 1999 16:04:49 GMT
Is it possible to use more than one modem in a win95/linux dual boot box? If
yes, wouldn't there be some sort of irq conflicts? I mean a PC only has two
serial ports(com1=com3 and com2=com4)and there should be only one port
available after you've installed a serial mouse. This probably wouldn't cause
any problem in linux, but what if I also want to use both modems in windows?
Forgive me for my ignorance, I know basically nothing about how the system
works with irqs.
thanks for any inputs.

One thing I like to do with my crontab is to enter this in my root crontab:
* * * * * touch /tmp/.crond_running
This will touch a file called .crond_running every minute, so if you have
any doubts about cron running, just look at the date/time of the file. If
it's within a minute of your system time, cron is running. If it's more
than a minute, you'll know it died. Just remember to look at it with the
-a flag!

You can have a serial mouse, and 2 modems if you use at least one internal
modem.
Jumper the internal modem to use a non-standard IRQ.
e.g mine can be jumpered to IRQ 2 on address 0x2e8 which is the address of COM4
(/dev/ttyS3)
Then run setserial to tell Linux where it is :
/bin/setserial /dev/ttyS3 uart 16550A port 0x2e8 irq 2 skip_test spd_vhi
You can put this line in /etc/rc.d/rc.local so it is run at boot time.
The rule is that none of the serial devices can share either an IRQ or an
address.
Each COM port is uniquely defined by the address, but the IRQ can be whatever
is supported by your hardware.
In principle you can have a serial mouse and 3 modems - e.g
serial mouse IRQ 4 address 0x3f8 (COM1) (serial port on motherboard)
external modem IRQ 3 address 0x2f8 (COM2) (serial port on motherboard)
internal modem0 IRQ 2 address 0x2e8 (COM4)
internal modem1 IRQ 5 address 0x3e8 (COM3)
Most motherboards have 2 serial chips. Internal (hardware) modems also have
their own
serial chips.
If you have a pure PnP modem you basically need to do the same but first you
need to configure it using the isa pnp tools.
See the Serial-HOWTO guide.

If you read the webpage (http://licq.wibble.net) you'd notice where it says;
required for versions >=0.70: licq_qt-gui-0.63.tar.gz
Download that, and follow the instructions. Read the README file for both it
and the main LICQ archive, and it'll tell you what you need to do to get LICQ
up and running.
Once you've got LICQ installed, you'll need to tell it which plugin to use
on the command line.
licq -p /usr/local/share/licq/plugins/licq_qt-gui.so
is the command-line I use.

I have Mandrake linux 5.3, and I have not seen its tar archiver working,
yet.
Whenever I try to uncompress a tar file( I write tar -x filename)
something very strange happens. After I hit Enter the screen moves a
line up and there is no any activity. The cursor remains and I can write
whatever I want, but nothing happens. Then I hold Ctrl+C and I receive
the command line again.
I cannot figure out what is wrong. Please, help.

My gnome control-center screensaver properties applet doesn't show any
of the screensavers that come with xscreensaver. All it shows is "No
screensaver" and "random screensaver".
When random is selected, it cycles through all of the screensavers.
Also, if I run xscreensaver-demo, I can preview all of the installed
ones.
So how do I get the gnome screensaver properties applet to show the list
of all the installed screensavers so that I can select the one I want?
I've looked at the xscreensaver man pages and scoured dejanews, but I
can find any pertinent info.
BTW, I installed xscreensaver, gnome, and enlightenment just last week,
so I'm pretty sure I've got the current version of everything.
In case it's relevant, here's my ~/.gnome/Screensaver file:
[Default]
nice=15
waitmins=10
dpmsmins=20
dpms=false
password=true
mode=RANDOM SCREENSAVER
command=xscreensaver -no-splash -timeout 10 -nice 5 -lock-mode
Any ideas or pointers to some relevant documentation would be greatly
appreciated!
Thanks in advance,

You should try to think a bit further pal.
mp3 is also just a file and file caching is for files, so that it is cached
is logical and coorect. It should make a mess off your system, to cache
certain files and not to cahce other files. Your timing would clash.
You can however set the max time for caching though you can do that with
bdflush.

Be sure to set the rights on unix level correclty for that user.
Use chown and chmod for that.
You are doing something wrong with the rights.
You should try to login as a Linux user on that box and try out what you can
and what you can't do. The adjust those rights that that user/group can do
the things that they should be able to.

You can use Oracle 8 completly licencse free when you use it for
non-commercial use. There aren;t any user restricments are anything. It
is just a complete and stable Oracle.
Though when you leave development and start production in a commercial
environment you should pay for server and client licencse.
If you don't want that, than Sybase 11.x is the best for you. Sybase is
a very fast and reliable RDBMS also and the version 11.x is complelty
free for Linux users. It isn't clear if the 12.x versions will stay free
on Linux but heck then you just run the 11.x server version.

There is no Apache newsgroup (at least that my ISP gives me access to), so I
was hoping someone here might be able to help me if they've had a similar
experience.
I am trying to use the EXEC CMD SSI tag to execute a program w/ an absolute
path. However, Apache apparently doesn't like this... is there any way I
can do this? Here is the tag I've been trying to use:
<!-- #exec cmd = "/home/ducky/test.cgi" -->
test.cgi is chmoded 755 and is executable. I can access it throug HTTP
directly. However, when I try to execute it with SSI that way, it fails,
not even producing the usual ERROR PROCESSING THIS DIRECTIVE message.
Any help/tips/pointers would be very appreciated.

Ooooh, time for you to get in some reading on I/O ports and IRQ's. I'll
try to explain this in some way to help you understand. Part of my job
is such that I have to simplify technical terminology for people, and I
need some practice.
Think of an IRQ as an address. Only one device can use a given address.
Fortunately most newer PC hardware allows us to change the IRQs to any
available number from 1 to 15, or any com port number from 1 to 8.
Older I/O cards limited you to COM1 thru COM4 & IRQ1 thru IRQ5.
A standard desktop clone PC, on average comes with 2 COM ports, COM1
at IRQ4, and COM2 at IRQ3. These numbers can be changed, provided you
do not change them to values already in use by another piece of hardware.
Hard drives, Sound cards, expansion cards (SCSI, NIC or Scanner) and
Printer ports all use IRQs, so it is best to check their usage before
attempting an install. Most average systems have the majority of IRQs 8
thru 11 free (that's incase you ever feel compelled to go ahead and try
something on a blind guess ...when I'm faced with such a situation, I
usually shoot for IRQ10 :-)
Modems do not use IRQs, COM ports do. In fact, external modems don't use
any additional 'resources' than what are already in use by the COM port
to which they are attached.
Now we know that if you have an external modem, and attach it to <for
example> COM2, you aren't using using any additional ports or IRQs. If
you have an internal modem, those have COM ports built in and must also
be set to an unused IRQ. You have a couple choices you can make when
you install an internal modem. Most people will simply disable COM2 in
the bios so that COM2 on the modem can be used. Another option would be
to simply change the BIOS' 2nd port (or the new modem's) to COM3. and
move the new hardware's IRQ up to something not already in use.
The issue of using mulitple modems in Windows is kind of tricky. I don't
think Windows will allow you to use both modems simultaneously if they
are both using TCP/IP or if they're both attached to a Novell server.
It's most likely allowed if you're using one dialup connection for your
ISP and the other for attachment to a Novell server, a shell connection,
or a BBS.
On the other hand I know you can two (and many more) modems under Linux.
for ANSI (BBS), text based (Shell), and TCP/IP connections.
I wouldn't know about Novell's IPX.
An additional note, try to have your modems configured such that they use
the same COM ports and IRQs under Windows as they would use under Linux.

We don't anything about your configuration. First you need mod_include, then
you have to set XBitHack and a Handler. Furthermore you have to set Options
Includes and unset IncludesNOEXEC.
If it doesn't work then, you can ask a more detailed question.

Making use of non-free software on another machine is unfortunate but does not
put you in the same moral dilemma as having it on your own machine.

There is not much of a differnce, the commands are the same only the
path's are slightly different. About the same as you have with RedHat
(wich is ignoring the SystemV standard those bastards) and Debian, SuSE.
But nothing than find .|grep -e "filaname" can't fix.
Apache is available on AIX, though it isn't standardly installed like it
is on all linux distro's. But ./configure and make and make install do
work to slove that problem ;-)
Sendmail is available as default on AIX. So there is nothing to worry
about
Raymond, goodluck in your new job.

Subject: How do I use an on-board NIC?

I just got an el-cheap-o PC. It seems to have everything build onto the
motherboard, including the NIC. It works fine with Win98, but how can I get
Linux to see the NIC? It's not any brand listed in the list of Linux NICs
supported by the kernel. Do I need to use "ifconfig" and give the i/o
address, irq, hardware address, and stuff like that?
Thanks

Well there is only one good solution for this problem and that is to
reduce slack by making smaller blocks when you partition your harddisk.
Commonly 1024 bytes blocks are used for news, since the average news
message is about 1 KB. This way you have more inodes available and use up
less (1K) space for empty messages.
