Why not run Note for AIX on a RS/6000 box? You don't need to Notes on NT, neither
server not clients (both are available for AIX, and soon for Linux).

You need to upgrade to X 3.3.3.1 and get the XSVGA Server (get the RPMs
from the Redhat Site). From there running XF86Setup will allow you to
select the RIVA TNT card for the video. Then select 16 MB for memory
and no autoprobe. Enter your monitor frequencies and desired
resolutions and you should be able to get everything running. I am
using the STB version of the card at 1024x768x32bpp with no problems.

Or is the boot floppy you are trying to use, one that has LILO installed that is
pointing to a boot partition on the hard drive? If this is the case, I'm not
sure dancho's comments are entirely correct.

Any ideas of how to change the parameters of update/bdflush ?

Why not wait a few days, then run Notes on Linux? Alternately, run Notes on
Solaris (Sparc or X86) -- no need to play with NT if you don't want to!!

Hi Wil,
Linux support for Vortex 2 is very high up on our list. We were
previously working with the OSS guys, but for some reason they've been
taking a very long time. We're now moving on to put additional resources
on the project, and expect to have drivers sometime this summer. I
know, that's not immediate gratification... but Microsoft keeps us quite
busy with 4 sets of different drivers for each chip (Win 3.1, Win 9x,
Win NT 4.0, and Win 2000 each have different driver architectures) and
we're now just finally getting to a point where we can consider
alternative OS's (actually we also have OS/2 drivers for Vortex 1, but
that won't help gamers much)...
What is your opinion of Linux as a gaming platform? It seems that many
developers are moving to it, but how about game players?
Cheers,
Toni.

Hi Toni, I met you a while back when I was the Technical Editor at
ComputerLife Magazine, then again several months ago when you came to
Gamecenter to talk to our Technical Editor Ken Feinstein. Anyway, we
recently received new machines that came equipped with TBS Montego II
PCI cards and while I love the card in Windows 98, there doesn't seem to
be any Linux support for it. There's a commercial company OSS that is
talking about supporting the card, but in this age of instant
gratification, the idea of having to wait until July in order to "hear"
my operating system is a bit of a bummer.
Have you guys at Aureal discussed making Linux drivers? I imagine that
you guys put one together, and imagine all of that grass roots support
that would come your way from the Linux community. Well, just wanted to
hear your thoughts on the subject.
Take it easy,
Wil

People who don't like off-topic posts can stop reading here.
Just as an unrelated aside, pulp trees are grown and cut down to make paper.
They don't go around cutting down redwoods or anything to make those reams.
Pulp trees have a lifespan of approx 15 yrs, they usually cut them down in 7
years, and they replant something like 3 for every 1 they cut down. Not like
that matters much.
So you're not doing anyone any favors by conserving paper, unless you're
concerned about landfills. Which is still pointless, since there's so much
space that's deviod of humanity that the landfill companies own...it's really
mindboggling.
Environmentalists are generally the most idiotic and short-sighted people I
meet anyway (that wasn't aimed at you, just a random flame), everything is a
zero-sum game to them. I advise against listening to them, especially ones
named Al Gore and Paul Kennedy.

Check out the sam9407 development page.
http://www.anime.net/~goemon/linux-sam9407/
The HSP uses the sam9407, but I don't know how well this driver works
with the HSP.
Guillemot isn't being at all cooperative with the Linux sam9407 driver
developers.
You might send Guillemot a polite note encouraging them to cooperate
with these folks. It really makes no sense for them not to.
Cooperating with open source Linux developers would cost them almost
nothing, and expose them to a market of 10 to 20 million linux users.
Additionally Linux users are generally more experienced computer
professionals and computer users who influence the buying decisions
of other people.
Even with Guillemot's lack of cooperation, you might be able to help
reverse engineer the HW interface if you have a good development
environment for win98.
Myself, I'm getting a Hoontech card.

The message quoted above is completely wrong.
LILO uses BIOS calls to read the disk, and can only load files that reside on
partitions that are entirely visible to BIOS.
However, there is no need to have any Lilo-related files on
the root partition.
There is a file /boot/System.map that is used by the module
loader. Lilo does not care about this file at all.
The /boot directory is usually on the root file system.
The root file system DOES NOT have to be visible to BIOS.
Please read the existing Lilo documentation before giving
(bad) advice about Lilo.

I've got Win98 running again, thanks to the hint from "me" (below).
I think the problem was that I had the bootable flag set in _both_
the Win98 and Linux boot partitions. In any case I went into Linux
cfdisk and changed only the bootable flag, then had it rewrite the
partition table.
I was holding my breath when I rebooted the system, but Win98
booted up cleanly from LILO, as did Linux on a second reboot.
AFAIK I didn't lose any data. I then tried booting from the Win98
boot floppy and that worked also.
At this point I'm not sure it was actually clearing the boot flag which
solved the problem or just the rewriting of the partition table which
corrected some problem caused by Partition Magic 4.0, but I'm going
to try to investigate.
Many thanks to the responses I received here and via email.

Subject: Weird tty entries under 2.2.4
Date: 31 Mar 1999 23:25:42 GMT
hi there - migrating to kernel 2.2.4-ac1 solved a previous problem with ip
masquerading, but now I'm having a problem with ttyps having odd names in
utmp/lastlog when a user logs in under an xterm. 'w' produces output like
this:
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
damon ttyp0 hera.ihermes.com 2:32pm 0.00s 47:49 0.08s w
laur ttyp2ric :0.0 3:12pm 0.00s 17.33s ? -
(note that laur's tty is messed up - and pcpu?)
the sessions show up in 'last' as:
laur ttyp2ric|Gen :0.0 Wed Mar 31 15:12 still logged in
damon ttyp0 hera.ihermes.com Wed Mar 31 14:32 still logged in
has anyone encountered this?
also, printing via samba isn't working under k2.2, though lpr works fine
and i've updated my printcap because /dev/lp1 migrated to /dev/lp0. is
there a known problem with samba under 2.2?
again, any pointers to a better forum for these questions, if such exists,
would also be appreciated. :)
