What do you want to uninstall?
LILO?
Try: fdisk /mbr
This will remove lilo from the master boot record.
RH5.2?
just use fdisk again and delete the partitions by using the d command.
But take care. First have a look at on which device RH 5.2 is installed.
If it's installed e.g. on /dev/hdb you have to use fdisk as:
fdisk /dev/hdb
If you're unsure if you just chose the correct drive use the p command
in order to look at the partitions available on the current drive.
Any Linux partiton should have the ID 83 (except for swap: 82).
And afterwards...your drive will look like a virgin ;-)

I guess it's an internal job of the hard drive. It's called 'thermal
calibration'.
I've never heard that it might be possible to suppress it...

Recompile a kernel with scsi emulation. disable ide-atapi support. I'm
using a 2.036 kernel but after recompiling I've lost sound. CD writing
works perfect. I have to upgrade to 2.2.x kernel

I'd try upgrading to ftape-4.0.2 (? something like that). The stuff
that comes with the kernel is 1 version older than current. May cure
your problem.

So what's wrong with that? Getting away from Bills Happy Point'n'Drool
Playgroud is exactly what got me started on Linux. Now that I've got it
all set up and I have a clue how to use it, I actually have come to love
it for its features and could no longer care less about Microshaft. Or
whether anybody else switches, for that matter.

True, but how do you distinguish the two? For me, a Linux luser is one
who expects Linux to be exactly like windows and gets really annoyed
when it isn't. But who's fault is it that the Linux world is rapidly
filling up with this ilk? I'll tell you who: Microsoft and general
ignorance.
People have been stuck with DOS/Win31/95/98/NT/CE/2000 for so long they
can't imagine anything else. That's M$'s influence. And now there's this
big ol' bandwagon again. Linux has become a buzzword.
I consider this rather bizarre, in a way. I mean, if you've been
speaking only English all your life and you decide to learn Norwegian or
something, you'd be an idiot to expect it to be the same, wouldn't you?
Yet so many people think in just that way about operating systems.
That's the ignorance part.
For me, switching to Linux was exactly what I expected. I mean, I *knew*
it would be different in the same way learning DOS was a pain when my
experience up to that time was Commodore64 (don't laugh - I loved that
machine!). So I knew I'd have to read a lot to get good.

Subject: Problem while Upgrading Kernel
Date: Sat, 03 Apr 1999 18:29:03 GMT
Hi,
I have just installed RedHat 5.2 (kernel 2.0.36??) from PC-Plus
magazine coverdisk (UK). Also on this magazine is Kernel 2.2.2
I have followed the procedure for upgarding the Kernel but I am having
a problem..
Installation of RH5.2 went okay
X-Windows and everything working fine
Start upgrade:
I copied "linux-2-2-2-??.tar.gz" to /usr/src (as root)
I unpacked the source
I move to /usr/src/linux and read the README
I do a "make mrproper"
<here i get an error 'cos make isn't installed so I used RPM to
install make>
<i also realize that gcc isn't installed so I install gcc using RPM
too>
"make mrproper" okay now
"make config" - okay
"make dep" - this fails as standard header files can be found
(ctype.h, stdio.h etc...)
I have read GCC-HOWTO and Kernel-HOWTO and MAKEFILE and cannot see
what I have missed.
The headers are where they should be. Symbolic links are in place
(usr/include/linux and usr/include/asm)
Any help appreciated..

I've heard somewhere that pinging a stuck 2.2 machine might unstick it.

Well, I can tell you that you don't mount audio-only CD's. To play

version of gtcd; AFAICT the KDE CD player should work fine. Maybe if

Where would you put the password? What provisions would you have
for changing it? If the cracker got hold of this password and
changed it you would have no way of recovering your system.

Does the kernel know about single user mode? An alternative could
be to have something like securetty which limits who can manipulate
the immutable flag.
Personally I can't see any valid reason for using the immutable
attribute on files owned by root. It provides no additional
security since root can always override it using the chattr
command, and for non-root users its no different from not
having the write permission to the file.

Slight correction: the (better) Windows method is to make your selection
with Shift+arrow keys: much quicker and much more *precise* than with the
mouse. Or, for large chunks, Shift+PgUp/PgDn/End/Home will get you there
really fast.
