Sure - but that doesn't increase the accuracy of your statements. If you
mean Windows, say Windows. If you mean the PC architecture, say PC. Given
that your posts are reaching a Linux newsgroup amongst others, it's
reasonable to expect that a large number of readers will be using PCs for
Linux.

Hello Everyone.
I am wondering if a program compiled for an i586 processor will run
faster than one compiled for an i386?
Along those lines, should I (with an AMD K6/2 350) be compiling from
source instead of installing i386 rpm's?
Thanks!

Hi everybody,
I have this couple of files, that - although defined as *.dat - play
well under the
Windows player, that recognizes them as ActiveMovie format.
Under Linux, where I want to see them, the command "files" recognizes
them
as Microsoft RIFF.
Xanim is unable to play them, it doesnt recognizes their format.
Any idea for a good player (and which is their format, anyway...) ???
Thanks

Currently, the only way is to use ide-scsi(don't know if that's gonna
ever change either).
You have read the CD-Writing HOWTO, right? Make sure to pay particular
attention to the kernel config requirements.
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html
There's some real good info on the cdrecord site as well.

It can be done, really. What kind of problems have you run into?

'J' Works perfectly! Just recently used that to copy an entire win9x file
system, and on real win9x systems you get the proper long names as expected.
The only thins missing are the file attributes such as system, hidden, and
readonly.

What you need to do is recompile your /home/ftp/bin tools as
either static or copy your /lib to /home/ftp/lib. thats because when
ftp is fired up it is chroot and (well, I think you can guess what
happens) ELF tools need the librairies. so you need to COPY the libs
to /home/ftp/lib or take the fileutil-3.16 package and compile that
package as a -static version. BTW while you are at it. do the same
with tar and gunzip/gzip programs. that way users can download a
directory tree in one shot!
BTW. you might want to do something similar to keep static
tools around in the horrible event your ELF Libraries get muffed up. I
keep static tools in /static. that way if I need a tool and elf is
softa muffed. I can at least have something to back up on. OH yes make
a static BASH shell as well. in addition to the bare bones toolbox.
Now if you decide to go with the /lib idea. hers how I would
go about it
mkdir /home/ftp/lib
cp -R /lib /home/ftp/lib
that will allow you to continue using your ELF compiled tools. but
that means... you need to maintain two copies of the /lib directory.
No, you cannot HARD Link or Synbolically link the directories. they
have to be Truely copies. Actually you could do a hard link on EACH
file. but thats a pita!

That would work, as long as you dont allow defrag to mov these files around.
If that happens the lilo loader will no longer be able to find these files.
At least keep loadlin around in this directory so you can boot this way, too.
>If you mount C: as vfat, give the files 8+3 character uppercase names.
8+3 names is not necessary or required for this to work. If you ever
need to use loadlin with 8+3 names you can use DIR to see what these names
are.
You probably even could make /boot a symlink to /c:/linux/lilo, assuming
the win file system is mounted type vfat on the directory '/c:'. Thus
you don't need to change names in /etc/lilo.conf.

Right. That means you could be short of: processes (look at ulimit), file
descriptors (look at file-max), inodes (look at inode-max), memory (try
running vmstat 5 and see how you do when it goes pear-shaped) or no doubt
something else I've forgotten :)
The fact that fork can't cope *probably* means that it's not a network-
specific problem - but then again, I'm far from an expert at this...

RE: DiskDruid, IDE drives and partition overlap
Jim,
As a newbie myself, I am hardly one to offer advice, but I did encounter a
similar problem. I have had a few system lock-ups where I have been
forced to reboot without a clean shutdown, and Linux has always done a
good job of recovering (with the below exception). Fsck usually deletes a
few dateless i-nodes and goes merrily on its way.
However, one time I had a lock-up and fsck was unable to repair the disk
due to massive partition corruption. I tried manually, but fsck still
encountered too many errors to repair, even interactively. After a half-
hour of defaulting each prompt, I gave up and reinstalled. This was not
long after installing Linux.
My suspicion is that the problem was not caused by the lock-up, but rather
that the problem was with the partitioning on the IDE drive. More
specifically, I believe that Windows and Linux were thrashing each others'
partitions. I initially [re]partitioned the drive using DiskDruid. The
drive is an IBM Deskstar 22GB UltraDMA, and there was a pre-existing FAT32
partition in use on it. Because of head/cylinder counts, Windows wanted
to access the drive with an LBA configuration. DiskDruid (and Linux),
however, access the drive with a Normal configuration.
For the re-installation, I used fdisk, and this is what aroused my
suspicion. Fdisk complained that DiskDruid's logical partitions
overlapped both the FAT32 primary partition and each other, and that they
were out of bounds of the extended partition. DiskDruid apparently caused
this condition and failed to detect it. So it seems that DiskDruid can be
a little reckless in verifying partitioning.
I wiped out the drive and experimented with recreating the FAT32 partition
with and without LBA in the BIOS. For some reason (even using the Normal
cylinder locations), fdisk still reported overlap when I created the
logical partitions. Eventually, tinkering around and LEAVING 1-2GB OF
UNALLOCATED SPACE before each logical partition, I found locations that
did not overlap (I am still unsure about the reported cylinders or why
they overlapped). I initialized and installed, and there have been no
more problems.
I am not sure why I had to separate the partitions so, or even if I did
things correctly. But the systems have co-existed peacefully ever since.
In the meanwhile, I have stopped using DiskDruid completely, and I have
grown to appreciate fdisk-- and SCSI drives-- so much more.
That's my story. It certainly does not solve your problem, but it may or
may not help explain one possible cause for massive partition corruption.
Since no one else brought it up, make sure you try fdisk to verify any
DiskDruid partitions, particularly in conjuction with Windows and IDE.
Fdisk is worth the steeper learning curve, and does a much better job
foreseeing calamitous partitioning. Good luck....

Daron Kallan
