"mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom"
make sure that the directory /mnt/cdrom exists. otherwise create it.
(mkdir /mnt/cdrom)
Also check that /dev/cdrom is pointing at your cd. (ls -al /dev/cdrom)
Otherwise, link it (ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/cdrom) where /dev/hdc is where
your cd is installed.
You could also try "mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom" to mount your
cd without the link.
If you don't know where your cd is, you could try putting the cd in the
slot an then issuing the above command to see if your cd is installed at
/dev/hdc. If it is y'it will get mounted, otherwise you will get an
errormessage. Then try replacing /dev/hdc with /dev/hdb or /dev/hdd.
See "man mount" and "mount --help" for more help.

Andreas.

You can specify the frequency at which the timestamp is written to the
file. The parameters "-m 0" (no quotes, of course) on the syslogd
command line disables the writing altogether.

you haven't provided any relevant information. for instance,
what distribution are you using? is it true that you're using
shadow passwords (which are GOOD, indeed, non-shadow is incompetent).
(you can tell by seeing if the encrypted password is in /etc/password.)
finally, find out whether you have other programs for adding users
(such as the useradd suggested by the message!)

a user should only be allowed to logon from the local console and from
nowhere else.

on my redhat52 I found /etc/security/access.conf (which belongs to the
pam-package) which could do the job.

I added the following line:

-:gast:ALL EXCEPT console

but this didnt work. and even if I say:

-:gast:ALL

which should disable any login, the user still can logon via ssh and
console.

how do I activate the access.conf-file ?

are there better ways to do what I want to do ?

thanks a lot,

I'm not sure about Perl being intuitive. Powerful, useful, omnipotent,
certainly, but intuitive? I wrote a Perl script a while ago to
automate a website (produce HTML from text file with meta data). To
get rid of the newline character from the variable $m I had to do

Obvious, isn't it?

The Short Answer: No.

The Long Answer: No, with a few buts. First, your Linux installation can be
afftected by DOS viruses (assuming you're running on a PC) if you dual boot.
For example, if the particular virus writes to the MBR, it'll cause problems.
Linux itself can not be affected by viruses as we know them in the DOS/Mac
world. However, "Trojan Horse" programs can be a problem. If you were to
download a script or program and run them with root privaledges you're just
asking for trouble (assuming they weren't from a reliable, trustworthy source).

I hope that was a sufficient answer!

You can't just access the directory, however you can access the device it's
stored on. In short, the command goes:

mount -t msdos /dev/hdxx /dos/

What this does is mount your dos partition (assuming you're using FAT16,
subsitute your device for hdxx) to the directory "/dos" (make sure it exists).

For more info, try "man mount".

Subject: Why can't they all just get along?--libs
Date: Wed, 07 Apr 1999 19:02:32 +0000

I've had some problems installing libraries of all kinds. I'm pretty
sure
I'm missing something simple but essential. Here's the story:

On a dark and windy night, I had to install gtk 1.1. BUT, to install
gtk, I also had to *drumroll*--install the appropriate glib. So I
download the source of gtk 1.1.16 and the same glib, and I try
compiling.
The glib went fine. I put my /usr/local/lib into my ld.so.conf (I
didn't run ldconfig, because I didn't know about it, and I still don't
know whether I was supposed to). When I tried installing gtk+ 1.1.16,
it complained saying that the appropriate glib can't be found (it didn't
find a glib higher than 1.1.15). It said also, if you have RedHat 5.0,
delete the gtk and gtk-devel packages. I did so I did. Note that I
was installing the 1.1.16 stuff from source, not from rpms. So I tried
again. Nothing. So then I installed the gtk and gtk-devel rpms back.
After that, gtk 1.1.16 would compile fine (I'm guessing that rpm ran
ldconfig and that way detected the glib 1.1.16). I then tried running
gftp, the program that required gtk 1.1 or above--nothing. Some error
about
shared libraries. By now my caffeine supplies are depleting and I'm
getting a little nervous, so I remove the gtk and gtk-devel packages
again. And lo, gftp now worked. I then noticed that my control panel
app wasn't loading when I was root. I then spake unto my computer,
saying "I bid thee commence the execution of the one known as
control-panel." Nothing. Control-panel wouldn't work with the new
gtk. I then searched for info, and I understood that for compatibility
issues I needed the glib10 and gtk10 packages. I got them in rpm form,
and I also downloaded the newest glib and gtk in rpm form (1.2.1).
However, while gtk10 and glib10 installed, the gtk 1.2.1 and glib
1.2.1 complained. I posted this on some newsgroups, and got an
answer that 1.2.1 required glibc 2.1. So I installed that, but
again I may have forgotten to run ldconfig (I don't remember).
After I did that, glib and gtk installed fine, but now programs
that required 2.0 (such as tar) wouldn't run. Darn it all to
heck says I. Somewhere during this whole episode I lost some
files in /usr/include (such as stdio.h), so to get anything
to run I had to copy the contents of my include on the redhat
cd (/mnt/cdrom/live/usr/include) and I had to do the same for
/usr/lib. On top of this, my control-panel STILL wouldn't run
even with the gtk10 and glib10 packages installed (complained
of some undefined object or something gtk_something_somethingelse).
I then ran into some vague info about library linking with ld,
but I have no idea what this means.

So in retrospect, when I upgrade glib/gtk, old apps which ran
with old glib/gtk fail to function. When I upgrade glibc,
old apps which ran on the old glibc refuse to run (a little
alliteration in those two sentences--a-ha, a-ha, a-ha).

Can any wise souls out there whose power in the ways of the
Force is greater than mine own enlighten me with their divine
insight into the stuff of Linux?

Keep it real,

Mladen

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, the problem is already solved.
It was a stupid IRQ-conflict with a forgotten SCSI-card in my box, which
was -off course- at IRQ-12.
And the driver was compiled as a module, so the IRQ didn't show up
in /proc/interrupts...
Al is well now, even scrolling with the wheel works now.

Richard,

While you didn't provide quite enough infomation to be exact about
an answer, it would seem that permission's are the problem.

I would probably try putting the X-ISP binary, the PPP Damon in the same group,
say UUCP and adding your normal user to that group as well. This should
allow normal users, but only thoese added to the UUCP group to access
the dial-up.
