I would be surprised if it had been removed entirely; probably
it is available only in expert mode or something like that.
However, one should not get terribly excited about this sort
of thing. Those of us who are used to using fdisk can certainly
adapt to using disk druid. In fact if you do a workstation
install, which we have been doing recently, the partitioning
is done for you and it works fine.

In the past, disk druid could not be used for large disks.
Perhaps they have fixed this, which would more than compensate
for the `loss' of fdisk.

No matter how many display configurations I try, the Xconfigurator test
always displays black text fields and buttons. I've heard this is a fairly
common problem, but if anybody could present me with possible solutions, it
would be much apreciated.

I suspect that questions of efficiency are irrelevant. By its very
nature a GUI is VERY inefficient. What is the problem with adding
a fraction more of inefficiency?

I would like to know, however, about the limits and risks. I am not
familiar with these. I have written such a generic wrapper in curses
that works well for my needs. What limitations and risks am I
encountering?

I have a Brother HL-720 printer. According to Printing HOWTO it should
work under Linux with no problems. So, how do I make it work?
I understand (am I right?), that I need to add an appropriate filter to
/etc/printcap, and then I'll be able to do

 $ echo "test"|lpr

To get this filter I have been trying to compile ghostscript 5.50.
Unfortunately, I am getting the following:

# ------------------------------------------------------------
 /bin/sh <./obj/ldt.tr
ld: cannot open -lXt: No such file or directory
 make: *** [obj/gs] Error 1
# ---------------------------------------------------------

The beginning and the last five lines of ./obj/ltd.tr look like this:

# ---------------------------------------------------
 gcc -fno-common -L/usr/X11/lib -o ./obj/gs ./obj/gs.o ./obj/gp_getnv.o \
 ./obj/gp_nofb.o \
 ./obj/gp_unix.o \
[...]
 ./obj/gsnorop.o \
 -lXt \
 -lXext \
 -lX11 \
  -lm
# -------------------------------------------------------

What can I do about this?

And, is my idea of getting this printer to work correct at all?
 Control panel printtool (RH) says:

# ----------------------------------------------------
 Auto detection found the following:

 /dev/lp0 : Not detected
 /dev/lp1 : Not detected
 /dev/lp2 : Not detected
# ------------------------------------------------------

 and, of course

 $ echo "test" >/dev/lp

does nothing. So, does trying to compile ghostscript make sense at all,
or is there some other problem (what???) that I should solve first?
The printer _does_ work under Win on the same computer.

 TIA

Use fetchmailconf to setup your .fetchmailrc, this should work fine.
(You should have fetchmailconf on your system if you installed a
fetchmail rpm or compiled it yourself).

Subject: dd from SGI/SUN -> Linux
Date: Sun, 12 Sep 1999 19:07:05 GMT

I have an image on a tape that I need to extract on a Linux box. I used
the following on a SGI to create the tape:

  dd if=whatever.tar of=/dev/tape bs=20k conv=sync

I used the following on a SUN to create another tape:

  dd if=whatever.tar of=/dev/rmt/0 bs=20k

To verify things were alright with the SGI tape, I took it to a SUN and
issued:

  dd if=/dev/rmt/0 of=whatever.tar bs=20k

and the image was extracted from the tape in good shape. I took the
tape to a Linux box running the 2.2.6 kernel. I used the following
command to attempt to extract the image from the tape:

  dd if=/dev/st0 of=whatever.tar bs=20k [conv=sync,swab]

...and got the following error:

  kernel: st0: Incorrect block size.

Does anyone know of any options I can throw at dd to get the image off
of the tape?? Or, how should I create the tape?? Why can the SUN read
the tape and the Linux box can't?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Bullshit. I've a friend who installed RedHat 6.0 on a machine Win98 crashes

That'd be version 2.0.6 of glibc (could also be called version 6.0.6 of libc).
The others are just other libraries, although I believe libcrypt is closely
tied to libc (e.g. in OpenBSD it's folded right into libc afaik).

On my system I've also got libc.so.5.4.38, so if seti@home offered a
dynamically-linked libc5/glibc1 version of their client I could've run that.

Looks like you've been exploring rc5.distributed.net, eh? Their nomenclature
is similar to seti@home's; in order there, you see:

- libc6 for x86-compatibles, multithreaded (i.e. can use more than one cpu).
- not sure what "glibc2.1 and glibc2" means, but I think glibc2.1 supports
binaries linked against glibc2.0, so this is likely just a glibc2 mt version
- libc5 multithreaded
- version using the old "a.out" binary standard (as opposed to newer "ELF").
Not something you need worry about. Probably linked against the ancient
  libc4 (I've still got some libc4 binaries). Not-multithreaded.
- libc5 version that's not multithreaded. (Not sure why this is needed,
given that the mt version works fine on single-cpu boxes, or v2.7106 did).

cheers

I share each hard drive with the option "depends on password", and I
put in a password for full access. I share the "c:" drive as just "c";
the d: drive is shared as "d" and so on....

Then from Linux, I have a script that mounts all my different PC's hard

should have to do is change the PC names and the password.
(NOTE: First on your linux box, make the directory you want to
mount the PC drives to , like towerc and towerd below)
mkdir /towerc
mkdir /towerd, etc....

[root@tower2 /sys]# cat smbmount.sh
smbmount \\\\\tower\\c password -c "mount /towerc"
smbmount \\\\\tower\\d password -c "mount /towerd"
smbmount \\\\\tower\\e password -c "mount /towere"

I am trying to setup at Advantech 4825:

AMD 5x86 @ 133, CT65550 video, 2S 1P, 16 MB EDO memory.

I have tried setting up Linux on the IDE hard disk and the system ALWAYS
stalls with LIL on reboot. This happens with RedHat 5.0 & 5.1, as well as
SuSe 6.1. The original HD is a Seagate ST4310 4GB drive, but I have also
tried on an old Quantum 240MB to eliminate drive geometry issues.

I even get the same error when I create a boot disk during install and when
I dd the vmlinuz to a floppy.

I have tried with linear and non-linear modes. I have tried the ST 4310 in
LBA, Normal, and Large modes.

I have also seen this on other computers, but I can't remember how I got
around it.

Any ideas?????? This has been very frustrating and has sucked up almost 3
days of experimentation.

I usually run with "allow scaling" and "use document specified fonts
including dynamic fonts". If the fonts somewhere gets too small i
temporarily uncheck "allow scaling". You don't "have" to use a tt font
as default - adobe helvetica is pretty close to arial for instance, and
comes with several size options.

BUT......... i have a feeling that if you dive into ~/.netscape and fool
around a little with preferences.js you could achieve something.

An entry there starts with user_pref("intl.font_spec_list",
The preferences.js options is documented (confusing stuff) at

http://developer.netscape.com/docs/manuals/deploymt/jsprefs.htm

the options that deal direct with font-size seems to be MSWindows
options, but there's some more documentation there if you really wanna
dig.

Running with default values at 1024x768 on a 15" monitor things look
pretty good here really, even with arial 12 as default scaled font.

There's also that "trick" out there (if fonts get too small) to swap the
references to xfs fontpaths, so the 100dpi fonts list before the 75dpi
ones etc. Not exactly your problem i guess.

There's also more you can do to enhance tt fonts - check out the xfstt
page for info on how to deal with large font-encodings etc. (I doubt
that's your problem either though..)

Seems to be a netscape quirk. preferances.js is my best bet.

because once I close up 1, the program gets killed, but I'd like to keep
it running as long as the system is up.

A small disk can still have drive geometry issues.

That's not possible. dd the bzImage to floppy and boot, and
Lilo never gets near it. There is no way to get LIL<hang>
from a raw bootimage floppy. Something else is going on here.

Opem your BIOS menu and write down the disk parameters BIOS sees.
Boot your install disk, get a shell, and run fdisk -l, and
write down the parameters fdisk gets from the kernel.
If the two sets of numbers are not equal, Lilo will not work.
If they are, something else is wrong.

If this situation upsets you so (in E.Timor) then take your baggy ass over
there and talk to each bloodthirsty Indo soldier and convince them that
YOUR way is the right way and they should stop hurting those folks. After
you've created peace over there then come on back to the good old US of A
and teach congress and the whitehouse how to end hunger, discrimination and
government corruption. Since you have all the fucking answers go solve the
world's problems. While you're doing that me and some other 'disgusting'
folks will mind our own business and play with our Linux OS based
computers. fuck off bitch.

lovingly yours,

Bill
