to unmount a filesystem, do
umount <mountpoint>
e.g. if your drive were mounted at /floppy, say
then
umount /floppy
would unmount your disk(zip) drive.

First: Bin = Binary. A *.bin file is normally a compiled program (like a dos
*.exe or *.com file). What you should do? RUN IT (with "./filename")
Second: Maybe you used the wrong command to untar.gz it. Try "tar -xvzf
filename".
Last: Use the "umount /dev/drivename" command
Hope you got the help you needed :)

Quite probably...if you are using conventional password support &
wu.ftpd is compiled for Shadow or PAM authentication, you will
experience problems. Recompiling for the type of authentication may
help solve the problem.
Also check that /etc/ftpaccess "class local" either includes your
domain name or a simple "*".
My older Slackware cdrom includes /cdrom/source/n/tcpip/wu-ftpd-2.4.tar.gz.
Using the README file I tracked down wu-ftpd-2.4.2-beta-15.tar.gz.

no - at least IMHO. Imagine someone working on his workstation in his
home-directory which he gets via NFS from a fileserver - not such an
unusual configuration in a setup with lots of computers. With CFS or
TCFS the encryption takes place only on his workstation (in memory /
via a virtual mountpoint). The data is transmitted and stored
encrypted on the server. To me that's definetely a pro.
And regarding NFS security holes. Of course there are holes, but you
could also take several measures to make NFS much more secure, eg. using
secure RPC. Furthermore (T)CFS even avoids - as said above -
unencrypted sending of information over the network, which is also one
of the major drawbacks of NFS. So you could consider (T)CFS to some
extent as the 'better NFS' ;-)

Subject: swapon -s returning error
Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 17:53:01 GMT
Hi,
I am having trouble getting my swap spaces to work. My fstab file is ok, I
have created the partitions, etc. When I run swapon -a with no options, the
space is added with a priority of -1. This seems strange to me.
When I run swapon -s I get this:
swapon: /proc/swaps: No such file or directory
I don't think the swap space has ever been utilized. I tried loading my
system, which has 48 mb of ram, with no utilization. Free mem dropped to
less than 1MB, and still no swapping.
Please help me out on this, It is really causing some problems.
thank you very much,

You probably need about 30Mb at least to get a decent working system.
The base is round about 660kb by itself. If you feel happy to download
multimegabytes, go for it. If you get charged per Mb by your ISP, or
even by the hour, you would soon clock up the cost of a couple of CDs.
Some distros can be installed directly off the CD, and you are
*guaranteed* that you have a consistent set of packages. Sometimes
you download something only to find that it has a pre-req of
something that you haven't yet got.

So you created a directory and told the kernel to mount root of the
filesystem from your partition over it. Fine.
>More recently, after having finished with the partition, I deleted it, and
>edited my 'fstab' file to get rid of the reference to it.
So the filesystem in the partition had gone and init scripts do not
try to mount anything over the old mountpoint. Good.
>However, I noticed the last time I booted into Linux (having already done

Indeed it is. Why would it disappear? Nothing is mounted over it,
so it's just a normal, honest directory. What's wrong?
> If I try to unmount it, it says it already is unmounted.
Sure nothing is mounted over it. It's just a directory in your root
filesystem and since you didn't mount anything over it there is nothing to
umount.
>I started up X and ran the System Configuration tool through control panel,
>and it correctly showed no listing for the now no longer existing mount
>point.
It exists, but it is not a mountpoint anymore.
>I also checked mtab and it isn't there either (correctly).
Yes, indeed.
>So, where else should I be looking for why Linux still thinks this mount
>point exists and should have a directory name for it?
In any introductory book on UNIX? You had created a directory, it is
absolutely real, when you mount something over it it becomes shadowed by
the root of filesystem you mount, but it's still there. When you umount
the filesystem mountpoint doesn't disappear - it was there before mount,
why would it go away? Nothing shadows it anymore, so everything is back
to the state before mount. If you want to remove it - come on, it's a normal
directory, so rmdir will remove it just fine.
As for fstab and mtab - they are nothing but a database used by the
*utilities* mount, umount, fsck, swapon and swapoff. Kernel knows nothing
about them. fstab keep defaults for those programs, mtab keeps the list of
currently mounted filesystems. That's it. Certainly they have nothing with
the directory that sometime ago had been used as mountpoint.

Hi Sam:
I have checked x11amp , and found it use mpg123 also .
I can play .mid , .wav & .au through the correct software .
After one second of playing mp3 file , it is locked .
Is it the problem in AMD-K6/233 or some bugs in kernel ?
I also find this problem in other mail lists .

You need at least one swap and one root-partition (/), but installing
on several partitions reduces the impact of a potetial HD failure. (If
you're unsure and can spare the place, just leave some Gigs
unpartitioned or use them merely as scratch space (for Linux or Win,
doesn't matter) until you know your requirements - you can change the
FS-layout later (even without rebooting, I should mention))

Yes, a boot mamager (lilo) is included.

no. This means, you *will* need a book!

Then you're a lucky guy and no block from the actual Kernel image has
been put behind the magic line. Wait until your HD is full or just
sufficently fragmented, recompile the Kernel, and you get a fair
chance, that it won't work anymore. (been there, done that - although
in the ancient times of the 512MB limit)
