MacBinary just contain a 128-byte header that needs to be sliced off. The
dos program Behead can be downloaded from lots of places and does this just
fine.

I'm talking 6-8 seconds on my PII-400 with 128MB, KDE 1.1.1. gmc was about
12-14 seconds.

I believe the "joe" editor comes with a picolike mode called "jpico".
You could look for that ("joe", that is).

Since you asked: I call the editor edit. I wrote the first version in
8080 assembly language to run under the dos that came with an ICOM
8" disk drive. I then ported it to my own dos for a COMPAL-80. Then
to z-80 assembly for a North Star. Then to CP/M, first for the DR
version of that dos, then for my own version of it. Then for CPM/86
then PCDOS. Then I moved to an NEC-APC adding color things. I stuck
with DOS for a long time, moving to linux 5 or 6 years ago. I also have
ported my editor to SunOS and Solaris. It was only under linux that
ther editor was wholly written in C, before that it was almost all
assembly language.
I would like to hear from contributors to this thread about what
features of their favorite editor they like. I am always looking
for things I might add to my editor.

hi
i am new to the linux news group and linux so please be kind if i offend.
i checked the old messages for something on this and found nothing.
i am trying to set up a scsi II 8505 exabyte on a linux box running red
hat 6.0 on a scsi III dell box. i set up the file stinit.def (see below)
and ran ./MAKEDEV in /dev and two device entries were created: st1 and
nst1 (st0 is a dds-dc drive). the problem is the computer is not seeing
the high compression mode. i can successfully write and read to the drive
with some tapes, but not high compression. i have an exabyte tape written
in high compression and readable on the drive when the drive was attached
to a dec alpha running unix. the same tape is not readable when the drive
is put on the linux box. how do i properly configure and access the
multiple compression levels of the 8505 exabyte?
thanks!

Steve,
I am not an expert, but your base addres and interupt for the ISA card
seem wrong. I think on Mitsumi's web site they have a driver that will
work with a minimal DOS install to find the CD-Rom. This shuld give you
your address and interupt. Let me know if this helps. I have had a
simular problem but changed motherboards & CD-Rom to fix it.

Damn! That's quite a few. Can you be more specific about what you are
trying to do? As in... poll how? Just to check to see if new mail has
arrived, or to actually download mail from all those accounts? If the
former, I suggest that fetchmail might not be the appropriate tool at all.
You might consider using something else to build a list of which accounts
have new mail, and then use fetchmail to pull down the mail. I would
suggest using several fetchmail processes in parallel, as this will likely
be much faster than just one fetchmail process polling one account after
another.

Great news!!!
*Wipes sweat off forehead* Whew!
After much hacking, I found the problem!
Go to your kernel source and run `make menuconfig' (or whatever favorate
config setup you prefer) and take a look at the SCSI Low-Level Drivers
section.
Go to the PPA driver and look at the lines just below it, there are TWO options
for `slow access'. If you read the help, it says they arn't generally needed,
but for my (only 2 year old) computer, they ARE NEEDED! I compiled both of those
options in and the data corruption went away! :)

I'm presuming that you're using multi drop.
Try changing your envelope settings, I had a similar problem when changing
ISP's.
I was delivering mail using the qvirtual and envelope settings, I can see
that you have 2 Delivered To:'s, there is a mention in the fetchmail man
page that you can use "envelope n envelope-text" where n is the number of
matching envelope's to skip.
Failing that you may need to declare the graff.f9.co.uk as a localdomain.

The basic problem is that most BIOSs until quite recently used
a routine for accessing the disk which could not read beyond
cylinder 1023. (But it is a bit more complicated because the
disk geometry is often remapped by the BIOS.) If fdisk reports
having more than 1024 cylinders, you are supposed to arrange
to put at least a small (20MB) partition for /boot entirely
below cylinder 1024. RedHat's automated workstation install
will do that for you if it can. But this is an issue only
for the lilo boot loader which uses the BIOS calls since the
Linux kernel has not yet been loaded. The Linux kernel can talk
to the entire disk since it uses its own routines. Also, if
you boot Linux from a floppy, it is not a problem since the
kernel is on the floppy, so it is only a problem when booting
from the hard drive.
If your BIOS call can talk to the entire disk, presumably
the lilo boot loader will work. But I've never tried this
myself. I'd like to know the experience of anyone who has.
Perhaps the lilo program which installs the boot loader will
complain. But theoretically if you add the linear option
as described in the lilo documentation, it should work.
(The linear option tells lilo to address blocks on the drive
sequentially rather than by the (X,Y,Z) notation of cylinder,
track, sector.)
There is a Linux mini HOWTO on Large disks which explains a lot
of this.

The G200 is supported. According the Xfree web site, the G400
is supported partially. It says something about only one head
and no TV-Out. You might be able to get it to work choosing
the G200 setting and then playing with resolutions and/or modifying
the configuration file /etc/X11/XF86Config. Or you may have to
get the latest version of the XFree distribution.

Any other forums you can suggest? (not necesarily linux)
