recently:
I get lots of messages like these on the console (also readable via dmesg):

Not really. The base language accepted is essentially the same, at least
the last time I checked a few months back.
>Some features of f2c (-r8 to "promote" REAL variables to 8-byte floating

This is a *HUGE* bonus for legacy code. There's code I had written in the
late 80's that I'm still using and on platforms where g77 is my only
practical choice, I end up using f2c on some of these.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I have some heavy numerical f77 codes, chock
full of COMPLEX ops, that does upto 20% better using f2c; for another set,
also chock full of COMPLEX ops, g77 does a bit, and sometimes a lot, better
than f2c. How's that for an objective comparison ;-?

Subject: Network problems

Hi,
I'm running RedHat 5.2 and any network access seems to be really
slow. Netscape is the worst, occasionally failing to find host names
which I know exist. The DNS servers I am using are the same as when I'm
using win95, and never seem to give any problems then. I also have
access to a 486 running Debian (which works perfectly and quickly), and
compared the results of "netstat -r", and there doesn't seem to be
anything different other than the line :
127.0.0.0 * 255.0.0.0 U 3584 0 0
lo
in the redhat version. The other difference is that on the Debian box it
gives the irtt field as 300 rather than 0. However, simply running
netstat -r takes a long time to resolve the last line (starts: default
then gives nameserver details). I have a 3Com 3C509B network card if
that's important. If anyone could help, I'd be very grateful. It's very
annoying that my win95 box can access the network many times faster than
Linux...

I am using win95 :( Is there a way to work around it - I have currently
set up the config menu every time I start win95 so that I have an option
to boot into the old ms-dos (6.22) and I am ruunning the win on 16 bit
partition.
Any Clues?

I'm also using a K6-2 300 (overclocked to 100x3.5) and 128mb of PC100 RAM in
Linux just fine.
This is on an Asus P5a motherboard (Alladin V chipset I think).
As for the TX chipset, it can't cache more than 64mb of RAM.

Subject: Running Linux as Root
Date: Fri, 05 Feb 1999 14:03:57 -0500
With my latest Linux installation, I just got lazy and decided to
run as root all the time (I didn't even bother to create any user
accounts until yesterday)... but after reading all the horror-story
postings about how this is such a bad idea, I finally decided to buckle
down and resolve the issues that kept me from using a plain user's
account in the first place.
Here are some of the main points that I was unable to fix, I am
hoping that other people know easy solutions for them... as I am sure
they would probably benefit alot of people reading this newsgroup
<smile>:
1) I use KDE, and have never been able to get KPPP (the built-in
internet dialer) to work properly when run by any user other than root.
I can access the modem (when I run the "Query Modem" command from within
KPPP setup, I do get all the AT responses from the modem)... but it
won't actually dial in and establish an internet connection. When you
click on connect, it pauses on "Initializing modem"... the phone line is
never even picked up. I found a way around this by giving my user
account "Super-User Equivalence" using "linuxconf"... but I imagine that
is is a dangerous and lazy shortcut.
2) I have tinkered with "linuxconf" as much as I possibly can, but
cannot find a way to give ordinary users read-write access to my Windows
FAT32 partition (ordinary users have read-only access). There's GOT to
be an easy way to fix that!
3) I really need to find a comprehensive reference somewhere on just
all that "linuxconf" does and is capable of. It scares me to have all
of these security equivalence options selected for my user account (and
also frustrates me that they oftentimes still don't correct any
problems!).
Thanks for any help anyone is able to give!

I downloaded the isapnp program, and if I look as the computer is booting

Anyway, when I try to run the soundconf program that came with the oss

Just what would be the point of doing an ftpsearch on kde, qt, and
netscape? I can see if you're looking for something obscure, or some
old version, but wouldn't it be easier just to go to
ftp.kde.org, ftp.troll.no, and ftp.netscape.com ?

I used a similar approach to Matt's just that I have my system setup this way:
Primary IDE controller -- Master = Quantum (Win98)
Slave = Quantum (Data)
Secondary IDE Controller -- Master = Seagate (Linux/RH 5.2)
Slave = ATAPI CDROM
I've found fewer conflicts this way. To boot to Linux, just disable the Primary
Ide in bios. It's messy, but I didn't want to haggle w/boot managers ;)

argh! california wines are the worst. all of them seem to be sickly
sweet. is there something about california which precludes a *dry*
red? is it the land or the american palate?
give me a decent burgundy (bourgogne) like haute cte de nuits any day

hell, vinto tinto (some swedish blend of spanish vin de pays

After u do 'make zImage, make zlilo' _AND BEFORE_ you do 'make modules,
make modules_install', make sure you get all the old modules from the
old kernel out of /lib/modules first!!!
I made the same mistake, and confused depmod to no end. Basically do a
'mv /lib/modules/[old kernel version] /lib/backupmods, then do 'make
modules, make modules_install' in the linux src dir. Then finally
depmod -a.
Important, change ur scripts. Make sure kerneld is not invoked, the new
kernel does not like kerneld (it has kmod now)
