Use a newsreader instead of a web browser.

I'd vote for Debian too. I started with Slackware several years ago but
almost gave up on Linux because I couldn't install new programs. I
switched to RedHat and found it a lot better, but many of the programs
had bugs and it was often difficult to know in advance if a package was
going to run correctly on my system. I moved to Debian about 18 months
ago and find it excellent. The .deb packages nearly always work as
advertised and if they don't I get helpful replies from the maintainers.
Upgrading the system is very easy and pretty well painless.

I have Linux (Redhat 5.2) in my PC which is also running Windows 98.
Recently, I had to format the DOS partition after it had crashed. After
formatting, I loaded Windows 98. Unfortunately, after formating the DOS
partition and reloading Win98, the LILO operating system selector
disappeared and now I cannot access Linux at all. I tried booting through
the Linux CD so that I can reload LILO but something has gone wrong with
the CD. The computer is not able to read the CD at all though CD looks ok
and clean. I dont even have a Linux boot floppy, because I never thought
that CDs also get spoiled with age.

How do I get to access the Linux again in my PC? How to get the LILO back?
Is it possible to load the LILO in the Windows environment and make it
operational on reboot?

LOL. :) Don't you know you can use vim as a newsreader by definining
a macro that sends the output of rn to your buffer then saves it to a
file....then all you have to do is go here and do this and....

No seriously I use vi with trn myself. Trn actually calls vi this time
to edit temporary files that get posted.

I don't know. I don't care for Win2000. Doesn't matter that much
anyway.

Its is not difficult to create two floppy discs, one dos bootable and
the other contains the kernel. I am sure Brad knows somebody who has
access to a dos/win3x/win9x machine who can help him do create such a
floppy. Otherwise check http://www.bootdisk.com/ where boot images can
be downloaded and created using the rawwrite tool.

You (spike1) give up quite easily, dont you.

I installed RedHat 6.1 on an IBM PC 350, which counts all 80MB upon booting.
I also just upgraded the BIOS, and added append="mem=80M" to lilo.conf. But
it only sees 64 MB, no matter what I do.

Any thoughts as to what to try next?

Oh, please forgive me that I was too lazy to compile a non-gui Vim

Go to www.toms.net and download toms root boot diskette... make a
diskette from it, and boot your system with it, now you can mount your
root partition, and run lilo.

Patrick

I just went through LILO hell, so perhaps i can shed some wisdom on your
problem.

Firstly, although you cannot boot from you Linux cd, I assume you can still
read it from windows. (If you can't then stop reading here).

Make sure you have a blank floppy disk ready.

Go to windows and load a command prompt. (Make sure the linux cd is in the
drive.). Change to cdrom and have a look around. (dir). Is there an images
folder? This is good. In it you should see a file called 'boot.img'.

Now go back out of that directory and search the cd for a file called rawrite.
Could be in the dosutils folder.

Type...

rawrite -h

(This will show you the syntax that this command. Must learn this stuff)

Put you empty floppy in the a: drive.

Now type

rawrite -f d:\images\boot.img -d a: (assuming again the d: is you
cdrom drive.)

This command will take the disk image 'boot.img' and write it to to a: drive.
This disk is bootable. Leave it in the drive and restart the computer.

(Now, this is where my help might be incorrect as my LILO problem was with
Redhat 6.0 so perhaps the boot disk is different. I'm sure someone will
correct me if i'm wrong.)

Once you have booted off the floppy disk, is there a 'boot:' prompt at the
bottom of the screen? I hope so. At the prompt type...

linux single root=/dev/hdXXX initrd=

(thanks again bob)

...where XXX is the drive with your linux root drive. (Mind was hdb1)

This should boot up you linux drive.

Once your in, find lilo. Good chance it will be in the /sbin directory. cd to
it and type ./lilo

If all goes well, lilo will be reinstalled. You may then sing and dance. I
did.

I do hope thiis helps .

Brad

Of course, had I read your post properly I would have seen that you can't read
the cd at all. In that case I assume you can get the boot.img and the rawrite
executable from somwhere on the net. Maybe the Redhat site.

However, it still doesn't recognize the command in lilo.conf. Is there

Hi,

After keeling over and dying (nothing unusual there ;), I tried to start
Netscape up again, but it just died whenever I brought up a Messenger
window (browsing seemed OK). To find any error messages I tried starting
it from the command line with "netscape-communicator -messenger", and it
just died instantly with "Bus error". I was forced to reboot to make
Netscape work again :o(

How can I avoid this error?

thanks,
