Yes, I installed the new glibc libraries. And no, SUSE 5.1 doesn't have
any glibc libraries, unlike 5.3. I have seen some people commenting
crashes when using SO 5.0 with low memory. I have 64 Mb + 117 Mb Swap,
but maybe the Power Point presentation requires more?

still wrong (that's not even a necessary condition, since a program
could default $DISPLAY to ":0" or something. You need to see if you
get a nonzero value from XOpenDisplay (there's more complicated ways
of course - ymmv).

Don't worry about it. Either will work OK for many purposes and neither
will work OK for other purposes (on that HW). But in general, Linux
will be far superior then DOS/Win31 if you don't mind running without
the X system. Very many programs don't require it, and the SVGA SW
library allows programs to be fairly GUI and the text-only ones aren't
bad either, once you get used to it. Unless you've got some DOS/Win
programs that you just HAVE to run, try the Linux route.
The X system in 8 MB is OK, but you'll find big programs like Netscape
run agravatingly slow.

1. your favorite editor (I'm sure emacs even has a mode for man pages,
although I never used it)
2. a basic understanding of the "roff" document description language
3. a good understanding of the "an" macro set for roff.
Or just take a good man page as a sample and modify it for your needs.

Oh, a have noticed linux's stability can vary from computer to
computer. It never crashes on me, but for other people it can be as bad
as microsoft. I hear the old Adaptec drivers are buggy enough to bring
the system down from time to time.

I disagree. It "works" but it's impractical. It's true you can use the
wheel to scroll windows in X, but you have to do it without pressing
the wheel hard enough to click it, otherwise you'll paste whatever
is in the X clipboard into the window that has the focus. It's nearly
impossible to spin the wheel without clicking it. Has -anyone- found a
work around to this???

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
There are two fundamentally different ways to edit video with a computer. I
believe the way you are talking about is to digitize the video and do all
the editing within the computer.
There is another, cheaper way. It doesn't allow as many neat effects, but if
all you want to do is rearrange things and cut out bad spots, it is okay.
This second way uses your computer to control two video recorders or one vcr
and one camera. Both devices must be controllable. To use this method, you
build a 'log' of the tape by starting and stopping as each scene ends, and
annotatiing a log that the program provides for your entry. You can then
decide which scenes to keep, and which to discard, and call for the scenes
to be re-recorded in any order you want. When you finish deciding this, you
then press GO, and the computer automates all movement and recording of the
video devices.
The most common hardware setup with this uses a camera which can be hooked
to your computer. I forget at the moment the abbreviation for this
protocol, but many of the newer mid to high priced consumer camcorders
provide this. I know both of my Hi8 cameras do. This becomes the source
deck. Wait- LANC is the term, I believe.
The bundle comes with a little tiny 'box' that has essentially a vcr
infrared remote in it. Both the LANC cable and the IR box are plugged into
the computer, so the computer can talk to both the source deck (camcorder or
LANC compatible VCR), and the destination VCR.

I don't know what distro your using, but I did something similar to mine
(when I added a new partition that I'd initially left out because of the big
dard black whole in the middle of my hard disk [probably caused by a head
crash].
I created this new partition, rebooted, and found that it forced me into
single user mode. my /usr/lib partition had been shifted from hda5 to hda6.
The way I got out of it was to use the SuSE boot disk and go through the
install procedure until it got to disk partitioning, and then change the
mount point from that.
I could just as easily have used my boot/root floppies to change the
/etc/fstab file manually.
(This seems to be the problem from where I'm sitting)

Date: Wed, 03 Feb 1999 07:15:08 GMT
Has any body seen recursive copies of the /proc directory structure
digging down into itself in RH 5.2??? i was doing a find on a 2.4 GB
disk that didn't come back for over 1/2 hour. saw that there were over
30 copies of /proc and some other directories nested into itself.
copied files had 0 length. hmmm....???
any help appreciated.

Hi,
Their is a TLAN driver in Linux which will support only PCI card. As you had
an Netflex/2 EISA card you cannot configure this card.
I will The next thing is when you replaced the Netflex/Netflex-2 Controller
with NE2000 card you need to run the System configuration utility. This
utility you can find in the Smart Start CD that you received when you
purchased the server. Just Boot your system with the Smart Start CD which you
have received and select the system configuration utility. This will solve
your problem of
174 EISA slot mismatch
179 slot mismatch
Here note down the IRQ No. and I/O address of the NE2000 card.
I belive that you have DLINK driver for the NE2000 card. Just boot your
system with WIN95 bootable floopy. Insert your DLINK floppy into the floppy
drive. Execute the setup.exe. Then reboot the system in Linux. After the
system comes up you need to execute the following command. "ifconfig -a".
Then execute the command "netconf" at the prompt. Fill in the IP
address,Router address etc and also fill in the IRQ and I/O Address of the
card. Save all the changes and exit from the configuration and reboot the
system.
The solution for your RAM recognition is
You need to give the following command at the LILO. "linux mem=XXM" where XX
will be the actual RAM you have in your system. For example if you have 80MB
RAM on your system you need to type "linux mem=80M". If this works you can
add the line in lilo.conf so that you dont have to type the above command
every time.
Enter the following line in lilo.conf append="mem=XXM".
I belive all your problems are solved. If you need any furter help mail me
back.
