In my Netscape 4.5, Alt-U or View/Page Source does the trick. Or do you
actually mean searching for a certain word in the source? Save it to
disk and use your favorite editor.

Sorry, I didn't read carefully. There was a post awhile back that said
proxy arp for subnets was dropped for the 2.2.x series. The Changes
file doesn't support that assertion but it apparently it's so.

My programming skills are low-level so I can't help with modifying the

When I issue a ls command in a xemacs shell window, I receive a lot of

Instead of just pinging the server you should ckeck that the services it
offers are up'n running, e.g. try to send mail over it if it's a mail
server, try to download random files from it if it is a web server or a
ftp site, etc. But you can do all that in Perl, too. Take a look at the
LWP package.

 Toshiba back-tracks on anti-Linux stance

 Toshiba appears to have reversed its policy on Linux and decided to
support the open source OS on its notebook PCs after all.

 To prove it, the company's Japan-based Computer Engineering Group has
opened a Web site devoted to users keen to run Linux on their Toshiba
laptops.

 The site, which went live on 1 July, doesn't offer much information
right now, but it's a start. The site promises full details of how to
install Linux on Toshiba's notebooks, though it doesn't say when this
will happen.

 Other promised features include the creation of an information desk
for developers, Linux installation information and a list of supported
hardware, both PCs and peripherals.

 The company's move follows Australian notebook owner Geoffrey
Bennett's attempt to get Toshiba to refund to him the cost of the
bundled copy of Windows 95. Bennett eventually got his money back, and
sparked a worldwide protest against Microsoft in the process.

No, its in the soundcard. A hardware reset should fix it (turn PC off).

I'm running a dual-boot Win95/Linux system that boots using Lilo. My primary
hd has partitions for Win95, Linux swap, Linux root, and Linux /home.
IIRC, the Win95 partition is marked as the 'active' partition.

My lilo.conf looks like...
        # LILO configuration file
        #
        # Start LILO global section
        boot = /dev/hda
        delay = 50
        vga = normal
        # End LILO global section
        #---------------------------------------
        # DOS bootable partition config begins
        other = /dev/hda1
          label = win95
          table = /dev/hda
        # DOS bootable partition config ends
        #--------------------------------------------
        # Linux bootable partition config begins
        image = /vmlinuz
          root = /dev/hda3
          label = linux
          read-only
        # Linux bootable partition config ends
        #--------------------------------------
        # Linux bootable partition config begins
        image = /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/zImage
          root = /dev/hda3
          label = newlinux
          read-only
        # Linux bootable partition config ends
        #--------------------------------------
        # Linux bootable partition config begins
        image = /vmlinuz.old
          root = /dev/hda3
          label = oldlinux
          read-only
        # Linux bootable partition config ends
        #--------------------------------------

As you will note, the Win95 partition is the default boot (for my wife,
whom I don't want to bother with Linux yet). However, I can conveniently
boot either Win95, my current 'production' Linux kernel, my previous (backup)
Linux kernel, or my current 'development' Linux kernel, without worrying about
'active' partitions and the like.

Take this as you will.

i am not sure there is a good way. afaict L2 cache is transparent to
the user. i suppose a good logic analyser could watch for memory
accesses and count them.

if you are using an i386 type processor, you might try looking at

The box said 'WIN95/98 or better.' so I installed LINUX!

Definition of Windows 95:
A 32 bit upgrade to 16 bit extensions for an 8 bit operating system
designed to run on a 4 bit processor by a 2 bit company that
doesn't like 1 bit of competition.

Has anyone successfully setup an Aimslabs Extreme98 Tv Card under redhat
5.2??? I am running 2.0.36 modularized kernel. I have tried to use bttv
and the patch from Aimslab's to no avail. If anyone has accomplished this
please advise me with some clues.

Cheers.

Subject: ppp help needed
Date: Wed, 7 Jul 1999 16:16:18 +0200

Hi,
Is there a command which gives me the "status" of the ppp connection ?
That means, for example, is it on or off, if on then for how long ( or
since when ), what is the modem transmit speed, what is the modem receive
speed, and so on ?
I still cannot solve one of my annoying problems :
4. I usually use "xosview". It can also display "net" usage. For this
   purpose my /etc/rc.d/rc.local contains ( kernel 2.0.36 ) :
        # Enable IP accounting for all IP packets into and out of machine.
        # This is needed only if one is running an older 2.1 or 2.0 kernel.
        /sbin/ipfwadm -A -a -P all -S $(uname -n) -D 0/0
        /sbin/ipfwadm -A -a -P all -S 0/0 -D $(uname -n)
   The problem is that the "uname -n" is "mymachine.mydomain" at boot
   time, and there is no "ip" address, so when the new ppp connection is
   established it is not taken into account ( I mean the "net" display
   shows nothing ). If I execute these two lines again after the ppp
   connection is established, I simply get an error 'host/network
   "mymachine.mydomain" not found' ( that's normal, the ppp server gives
   not only an "ip" address, but also a "hostname", which does NOT replace
   my hostname, and "mymachine.mydomain" is unknown to the name server ).
   I tried :
        /sbin/ipfwadm -A -a -P all -S 0/0 -D 0/0
   and :
        /sbin/ipfwadm -A -a -P all -W ppp0
   but they do not work either ( I should say here that /proc/net/ip_acct
   does seem to provide reasonable accounting in these cases, but the
   "xosview" cannot see / use it ).
   Can I somehow convince the kernel ( or maybe the "xosview" ), at boot
   time, that any ppp interface that will later be "up" should be
   automatically taken into account by the "xosview".
   Should I maybe modify some ppp related scripts to include some lines
   with "/sbin/ipfwadm" ? If yes, which ones ( I think, after the ppp
   connection is established I would need to "append" a new rule and after
   it is gone I would need to "delete" this rule, but at this time the IP
   address is already gone, so I would need to keep it somewhere ? The
   system is RH5.2/i386. )
Thanks in advance,
Jacek.

Assuming you are just distributing files, i.e. not
running config scripts afterwards, look at rdist.

You could also set up a server with your rpms on it
and have a cron job to look for any new rpms, and
run rpm to install it off a NFS mount point.

I don't think it's available yet.
On June 1 they anounced that they plan to launch it by year's end.
There was an article on www.nytimes.com.
I haven't checked lotus' site.
