did you run isapnp? I know 2.2.6 is supposed to do PnP but it doesn't
work for me at least.
Did you run modprobe sound? Did you alias sound sb? Did you set the
arguments to the sound module?

You probably need the jpeg source, e.g. from the same place as you got
the gs source. Please reread the gs "make.txt" file.

Slack also supports NFS installs, which is what I did for my last 386.

No, you don't even need to be root to compile unless your compiling in a
location were only root has write access. You do however need to be
root to install since most installs go to locations were only root has
write access.

Because everything in samba seems to be nice, this should be a windows

Slackware still has the "a" and "n" diskette series. I think
Slack also includes a ZipLinux thingy so you can install from a
parallel port zip disk... much less tedious than diskettes.
I used a variation of it to install on a 386DX that didn't have

try 'make dep; make clean' instead. i never heard of 'deps', but that

I've just set up a Linux system with Red Hat 5.2 (kernel 2.0.36).
Networking
generally speaking works correctly, at least so far my LAN is concerned.
I have access to the Internet through a firewall, but I'm not able to
use it
with Lynx, even after having configured the http_proxy param in
lynx.cfg.
I always get the response: Incorrect url syntax. Notice that news and
mail
work. I've configured the firwall in the form host:port, but the better
way
would be through a .pac file. However, it appears that Lynx doesn't
support it.
With Netscape (configured with the .pac file), I always get the reponse
that I'm not allowed to access the / directory.
Notice that under Windows averything goes.
Any hint ?

emacs*cursorColor: Orchid

Don't install things into the root directory. This is not windows 95,
the filesystem has an important structure to it. Your Java JDK should
be going into /usr or /usr/local and your ICQ program should likely be
going into one of the bin/ directories inside /usr or /usr/local.
Another alternative would be in your home directory in a bin/
subdir....this is for when you do not have root access to install into
more apropriate locations.

This may seem like a stupid question but when you install a library,
gtk, or glib, for example as root, does it matter where you compile the
code....that is
do I need to compile it in a place where I'm going to leave it? In
other words,
is the compiler installing it to the directory in which I am working
(/root)
or is it installing it in some other standard place? Thanks much,

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I guess I'm a bit confused about installing programs that come in the "tar" or
"gz" format. I tried tonight and it was a disaster. Tried two programs and the
uncompressing went OK. Saw tons of files names scrolling by on the screen but
when I finished and typed "ls", there were only two files in the directory, the
original file with the "gz" extension and another file without the extension.
What happened to all the other files? I spent quite a while looking for them
but without success. Does the program create its own directory? If so, how do
I find it?
Whenever I try to compile a program and type "./configure", I always get an
error message that says "No such file or directory." How do I ever install
programs?
Please help. I'm just about ready to give up on Linux.

Go www.freshmeat.net or www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPMS and look for audiofile and
esound. Those packages will meet the dependencies that are failing.
However, audiofile requires GLIBC_2.1. Make sure you have that, then you rpm
-i the rest and that's it.
