Why did you put Kernel 2.2.1 as the subject of the message, when it
seems that the message has nothing to do with Kernel 2.2.1? Just
wondering.

Anyway, I had a few of the same problems, and they appear to be fixed.
Although, to be honest, I don't know what fixed them. The only thing
that I _might_ be able to help you about is StarOffice. Have you
updated your 1.3 upgrade with the update downloads from Caldera? I had
the same problem with StarOffice, and think it was related to two
problems: X11 compatability, and Glibc2. Try rerunning the glibc2
install script from the StarOffice installation stuff. After that, you
might try moving the X11 libs out of the StarOffice library directory so
that it links to the system's X11 libs. StarOffice is working for me
now, but I don't know for sure if what I did there cured it, or if it
was something else. I feel stupid for saying that, but it's true. I
was stumped.

Anyway, that's just an idea.

Good luck,

Lyle

The problems you're running into were fixed several versions back. I'll
admit it's probably not obvious from the WHATSNEW file that this problem
was fixed. But in general it's a good idea to upgrade to the latest
version of a piece of software if you're running into bugs.

Yard-1.17 should work fine with bzImages (works with mine). If you still
have a problem, you may have found a new bug, but I'll need more
information.

I have Windows 3.1, '95 and Linux 5.2 on the same machine. I used Partition
Magic to partition, and System Commander fot booting. Works fine except it
hides the partitions not being used, when booting a particular system. Also
you have to make two primary partitions, very difficult with Dos fdisk.

Someone the other day emailed me a KDE icon for WordPerfect after I
had asked about it in a newsgroup. I copied it into what I believe is
the default directory KDE stores its icons in (/opt/kde/share/icons)...
and tried to change the icon I'm using for WordPerfect over to this new
one.

However, this icon does not show up at all in the icons-available
window under the Menu Editor when I go to change it. Just be anal, I
tried copying it as well to the personal (.kde) directory location in my
home directory... and it didn't work from there. Is there something
special you have to do to "register" icons other than just copying them
into the proper directory, or some other kind of step that I'm missing?

There is, and it's called unzip :-) . The source is distributed from
ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/info-zip/src/ , although all the distributions
I've met provide packages.

Sigh... why is it that when people respond to a posting of mine with some
really important or critical information to offer, they just post it the
thread... whereas when people feel like responding to my idle chatter with some
information that I already know about, they have to post it AND email me a copy
(most of the times two or three copies because they don't know how to use their
newsreader software properly! <smile>)?

I grasped the concept of Java-is-crossplatform-but-you-have-to-have-a-JVM
about three years ago... my point is why do they still have different ports of
all their applications available for download? Nowhere on Sun's site can you
just download the class files needed to run HotJava on the JVM you already have
installed... you have to choose the port for you operating system that has the
appropriate JRE bundled in again.

That's not cross-platform, that's just another several megabytes tacked on
to everything you have to download... in the name of making things easier for
developers. Sorry developers... but the world never has, doesn't, and never
will want to go out of its way to make things easier for you at its expense!

You need to upgrade to kernel 2.0.35 or 2.0.36. I would recommend
2.0.36 as there is a bug in the lp driver in 2.0.35 that will make you
wait forever for printouts. My HP Colorado 5GB works under Linux, but
not well with BRU 2000 (yet). I used another backup utility OK, though.

Good luck,

I'm running SuSE 5.3. I built 2.2.1 and I am running it right now.

It is not trouble free. APM is not working and I have some odd
networking problems. APM is almost certainly a bug in either my
config or in 2.2.1 itself. As for networking, I don't know if it is
the fault of 2.2.1 or pcmcia 3.0.8.

One nice feature of Linux (and Unixen in general) is the ability to
have more than one bootable kernal image. I still have the 2.0.35
kernel that came with SuSE 5.3 which does work with APM and
networking. So it isn't as if I am crippled or anything.

It's not the sex part that bothers me about BG's becoming a father, but
that he could ever accept the role as one. In the 80's among OS/2
developer groups it was pretty well known that BG -hated- children,
esspecially babies. Couldn't stand to be around them. Now he has two(?).

Well, I agree with Paul, X shouldn't need a network to work on a standalone
machine. However, if you really want to work on a network, without
experiencing too much lag, I recommand sxpc - it's a X protocol compressor,
and works just fine.

Xterms don't have scroll bars by default. To enable it, use `xterm
-sb`. As for the delete key, etc., you can configure that using stty.
For example, to set the backspace key, you would use `stty erase <key>`
or something to that effect.
