there's your problem, methinks. i don't know anyone who hasn't had SOME kind
of trouble getting the correct resolution in a box with an STB Velocity 128.
i had one - just got a graphics blaster RivaTNT. haven't tried to setup
linux with it yet, so i dunno if that'll work, but hopefully i can run at
the normal 1280x1024, 32 bit. i was doing it with the velocity 128 but it
wouldn't work in linux. moo.

You did not mention -- is there a hard drive?
To install e.g. Debian you need I guess 8 floppies,
4MB of RAM, and at least 20-30 MB of hard drive. For a reasonable
toy about 50MB, and you can even fit X on 100MB disk.
If your old PC is older than 386, then Linux will not run at all,
while on 386 it runs too slow to have fun.
Another option if you want to fiddle around is Minix, but you'd end
up with linux anyways.

At the same time, $150 buys a motherboard and 300MHz CPU, $100 buys
64MB of ECC PC100 RAM, and $110 buys 3.2G of hard drive.

Every distribution has its followers. If you want to have some fun,
spend a couple hundred on a 6G or higher HD and run multiple versions of
Linux. Get the InfoMagic Linux Developer's Resource (<$20), which
includes RedHat, Debian, SuSE and Slackware and take turns installing
them into different partitions. Run each for awhile and the one you
stick with at the end is the one that's right for you.

Hi there,

I'm looking for a program to record sound via the mike input of my
soundcard and write it directly to disk (as wav-file). All the programs
I know only allow recording to memory and saving it later, so they are
useless for half an hour of recording. Any suggestions? Please send a

I did look at the on-line documentation on your yard home

receiving or suggesting that a newer version might fix
whatever problems I have. I will confess that I may not be

You just need to get the newer 2.3.5 version of ppp. There is an RPM for
it on the redhat site, I dont recall the address though. If you have
trouble with the config files, let me know I can send you a copy of
mine.

Hi,
Let me explain the problem. Iam having linux slackware

following information.

proxy server proxy.pacific.net.sg
WWW server www.pacific.net.sg
pop mail server name pacific.net.sg

I have managed to set up the PPP connection with ISP. Each time i
connect, the IP addrress of the remote is different.

Now i wan't to go to internet.I ping proxy.pacific.net.sg in win95
and got the ip address. Then i went to linux and configured netscape
proxy with this ip address and tried to connect. But it cannot. In linux
i cannot ping using name(eg proxy.pacific.net.sg)or configure netscape
with proxy name. I also found that in win95 enviornment, for each
session i have different ip address for proxy.pacific.net.sg. Also
please tell me what should i put in /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf and
the /etc/HOSTNAME file, in this situation

Even after succsessfully setting up the PPP with ISP, I cannot go to
internet or read mails. PLEASE HELP ME TO SORT OUT THIS MESS.

Try using the `man' command -- `seek and ye shall find.'

(Linux 2.2.0) [/home/michael]
 128 --> man lilo.conf

        [ ... ]

       timeout=tsecs
sets a timeout (in tenths of a second) for keyboard
input. If no key is pressed for the specified time,
the first image is automatically booted. Similarly,
password input is aborted if the user is idle for
too long. The default timeout is infinite.

        [ ... ]

Make the appropriate changes in /etc/lilo.conf.

Possibly, you ftp'ed the file to your shell in text mode -- this often
will ruin a binary file. Be sure to set your ftp client to binary
transfer.

Can you make a dialup connection at all from linux? If you can, then
just use minicom & d/l kermit with zmodem from your shell account. If
you can make a ppp connection, you could just ftp it directly; but
that's a lot slower than a serial d/l with zmodem.
