Any major distribution will work. Beyond that, it's largely a matter of
personal preference. For my thoughts on several distributions, check my

Now the next question.
Is there anything else that does what Partition Magic does but without
the bug. I know there are others but I have never used them.
I think we would all appreciate hearing from the people who use PM's
competitor products.

Yes, there are more elegent ways. Amanda, Arkeia, .... there are many
client-server tape-backup solutions. Amanda is OpenSource, Arkeia and
many other commercial ones exist, and there are a few other OpenSource
ones as well. Personally, I lean towards commercial for things like
backup, but Amanda gets used by lots of universities.

Check to see if they are listed in /etc/passwd. If so, try changing the
password for that user. If not, and they also don't have a home
directory, then the user didn't get added to the system or some reason.

Thanks for the tips, Chris. However, set editing-mode vi did
not work for me (with bash 2.04.11). For one thing, echo
$SHELLOPTS shows that I'm still in emacs commandline editing
mode. Additionally, I should be able to toggle from insert
mode to command mode with esc and have subsequent input taken
as commands. For example, if I want to move my cursor three
words to the left, I should be able to type: esc bbb

I've found a pretty good resource for this material (and for
my questions) in the man bash pages. And since bash is
configured with a preference for emacs, I've decided to teach
myself basic emacs navigation. While I feel awkward with this
now, I expect that in a few days, I'll be up to speed. :-)

take a look at /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients:

#!/bin/bash
# (c) 1999, 2000 Red Hat, Inc.
# check to see if the user has a preferred desktop
PREFERRED=

    elif [ -n "`grep -i AnotherLevel /etc/sysconfig/desktop`" ]; then
        PREFERRED=AnotherLevel
    fi

[cut]

and (may You have to create) /etc/sysconfig/desktop:

#DESKTOP="GNOME"
DESKTOP="KDE"

I am working with RH 6.2, but RH 7.0 should have something similar to
this.

it was fairly simple after all.

interfaces

[eth0]

ip=192.168.0.3
proto=dhcp
atboot=yes

[routing]
default gateway=isp gateway (get this from ipconfig0
default gateway device=eth0

When I have drivers for everything i will ditch win98se and it's ICS for
better results :)

        Are you using dhcpcd or pump or something else? There isn't really
any DHCP configuration file, as that would defeat the whole point of DHCP,
which is that you don't have to go configure every machine! The way DHCP
works is basically that the client shouts onto the Ethernet:
Help!  I need an address!
  And the server replies: How about this one?
Sure, that one sounds good. May I have it?
  Here you go, and here's the other stuff that goes with it.

        As you can see, there isn't much configuring that _could_ be done
on the client side. If you just want more verbose logging, you can use
"dhcpcd -d", which produces debugging output. If you're using pump, I don't
know, but the man page should be able to tell you.

Don't know for sure, but there is a project called lm-sensors around,
which maybe is what you are looking for. You should also check with your
mobo's manufacturer to see if there are technical specs about this issue.

It's much easier and cheaper to configure/install/use VNC on both ends.

        Most other people's suggestions are pretty valid. I would also
suggest mounting as much as absolutely possible read-only; this will ensure
that the drives stay clean.

> Even with a UPS connected, we

        No, you don't. :-) Put the machine in a locked cabinet with only
keyboard, mouse and monitor inside. Or remove the power switch, pull it
inside the case, and lock the case. Zip-tie the power cord to the case or
epoxy it in. Have the cord plug into an outlet that's in a locked cabinet,
or splice it right into the line instead of an outlet. You don't have to
take anything for granted, you know - if you're motivated enough, you can
stop just about anyone.

        So what makes you think it's not finished? It probably is finishing,
it's just printing its output in such a way that it doesn't return you to a
prompt.

        Try this: run two xterms. In one, run 'tty'. In the other, run
'echo SOMESTUFF > <whatever port you got from tty>' You'll see SOMESTUFF
appear in the first xterm, but you won't get the prompt back - but it doesn't
mean that the 'echo' isn't finished, as you can see for yourself that it is.

        If you want the prompt to reappear at the end, just put 'echo' by
itself on the last line of the script; that will probably do it. If you
really think the script isn't finishing, put 'echo __END OF SCRIPT__' at
the end of the script, and see if it appears. If not, you may really have
a problem with the script, but I doubt it.

   Before doing anything very radical I would suggest that you go and
use the lpc command and try start,restart,enable then up. This should

Yes. I always have:

127.0.0.1       localhost
aa.bb.cc.dd     hostname hostname.domainname

But since I was using IP addresses rather than hostnames I don't think
this would actually come into play.

Did anybody get vmware (2.0.3) with kernel 2.4.x. to run?
The modules compile fine, but they cannot by started.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hans.
