I'm running RHL6.1 and the 7200e runs fine for me (I just can't get it
to write and xcdroast doesn't work for me). Anyways the device is
actually /dev/pcd0. So it'd be:

mount /dev/pcd0 /mnt/cdrw

If that doesn't work, let me know. I have a script that runs at boot
that loads the proper modules in order. I can email it to you later if
you want.

The bash history is stored in $HISTFILE.

Are you in such a hurry so you can't look it up in the bash manual page?

Remember that it's not considered nice to peek in other peoples

Subject: Hybrid cable modem problems
Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2000 19:10:38 GMT

I recently signed up for the cable modem service through CTVM.
Unfortunately until their system upgrade is complete I have to deal with
their hybrid system. I found a document on the LDP:

http://www.oswg.org/oswg-nightly/Cable-Modem.html

that describes how to get it working with CTVM. It didn't work for me.

One of the things I want to do is have the box that will be connected to
be the gateway for my home network. As a result, this box has two NICs
- a 3c905 and a 3c515 (I only have one PCI slot :( ) I cannot get 3c515
to work (as eth1) even though it's been working under Linux in another
system and it was receiving data from the cable modem when connected. I
type in insmod 3c515 and the system would say the device or module was
busy.

I connected the cable modem instead to the 3c905 (which I know and does
work). I reassigned the IP address to what was described in the doc:
IP - 10.0.0.1
mask - 255.255.255.240
bcast - 10.0.0.15

I created a ppp-on script and a ip-up.local script following the doc's
instructions. I then tried to dial and could not log in. I did a tail
-f /var/log/messages to follow along. For some reason the modem just
hangs up after 5 secs or so (and I did verify my password).

Does anyone know exactly how this system works? Does the NIC have to be
connected and working with the cable modem in order for the dialing to
be successful? Is the document I'm referring to correct?

I did it a while ago. Now I have NT on FAT (so I can write to it from
Linux...), but I think it was nothing special. Here is an excerpt from
my lilo.conf:

other=/dev/hda3
        label=nt
        table=/dev/hda

Right now it is FAT, but it should be the same with NTFS. I don't recall
if I even changed lilo when I reinstalled NT (and changed from NTFS
to FAT) just to make the soundcard work.

xcdroast not working? What does "cdrecord -scanbus" show you when the
7200e is plugged in and all the modules are loaded? It's entirely
possible that the thing is way out on /dev/sg8 or some such, though
cdrecord will probably report it as "1,0,0". You also need "SCSI Generic
Support" compiled as a module or into the kernel for writing to work at
all. Once that's done, try cdrecord out. Its diagnostic messages are
somewhat terse and cryptic, but a damn sight more helpful than Xcdroast's.

BTW, don't post 5 copies of the same message. It makes people think
you're clueless...

Subject: SBLive - Alsa Driver Questions/Problems
Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2000 14:56:13 -0500

    I currently have a RedHat 6.1 box running with Creative's EMU10K1
driver providing sound support. When I view certain webpages,
I get a /dev/sequencer error - something to the effect that it's not
supported under Creative's driver.
As a result, I've tried to install the ALSA driver, which is
supposed to support /dev/sequencer, on this system. I'm at the point
that the driver loads, but /proc/asound/cards reports --- no soundcards
---.

I suspect the problem is in my /etc/conf.modules, but haven't been
able to figure out what I have wrong.

Here's what I've done on the install to get where I am now:

1) removed /lib/modules/2.2.12-20/misc/emu10k1.o (actually just
renamed it so it wouldn't be found)
2) downloaded and untarred the alsa-driver, alsa-util and alsa-lib
files (version 0.5.6)
3) in the alsa-util and alsa-lib directories, did ./configure and
make install
4) did the following in my alsa driver directory
./configure --with-sequencer=yes --with-debug=full (I also
tried ./configure --with-debug=detect)
make install (as root)
5) ran ./snddevices to create the appropriate devices
6) edited the /etc/conf.modules to add the appropriate info for the
alsa sound driver. I also remarked the older information for the
emu10k1 out.
7) depmod -a
8) modprobe snd-emu10k1

When I try to load a mixer applet (under gnome), I get an error:
Couldn't open mixer device /dev/mixer. When I did an ls on /dev/mix*

Note, these originally were "crw-rw-rw- 1 root root", but
somehow get changed after running modprobe snd-emu10k1 and mixer. If
I re-run ./snddevices, the settings are again correct.

I also tried running amixer and got the following

amixer
The ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system.

yes, I have done a "modprobe snd-mixer-oss" but still get the error.

If I run a program that normally outputs sound, I get an error:
/dev/dsp: No such device. Yes, I have done a "modprobe snd-pcm-oss" but
still get the error.

Note: I've gone through a number of iterations on my conf.modules
file. If someone has the sblive working with the alsa driver, I'd sure
like to see what your conf.modules file looks like.

Finally, I've since gone back through my kernel settings and I have
sound support as a module. All sound cards are disabled in the kernel.

I've been through the FAQ, README and INSTALL files I suspect I've
overlooked something simple. If anyone has any other ideas or sees what
I overlooked, I'd greatly appreciate the help.

    Thanks,
    John

Subject: Software RAID-0 causes jitters
Date: 28 Mar 2000 20:05:01 GMT

I have a problem that no one else seems to be having, and I can't
figure out what's going on.
I have a 40gb and a 27gb maxtor hard drive, on /dev/hdc and /dev
/hdd, respectively. I'm running an ABIT BH6 with a celeron 300a.
I had these two hard drives set up in linear append mode, and
everything seemed to work fine. One of my friends told me, though,
that I could use raid 0, and test the speed on various different
chunk sizes until I found the one that performed best, according
to hdparm -t /dev/md0. Well, they all performed the same (3.57 MB
/s), and now I have the drives raid 0'd (this is striping, btw),
with a chunk size of 4.
The problem now is almost unbearable. Whenever anything accesses
the drive, the whole system jitters. The mouse movement becomes
extremely jittery, and everything stops responding until the HD
access has finished.
What's the story? I want to use RAID-0, but not if it's going to
act like this!!

Thanks,
Moshe

No I didn't. How do I uninstall a previous version ?
