Sounds like the problem here is that you are growing you application to the
point that they require more than capablity than you would get from a PC.
Sounds like you should just scrap the PCs an move to RS6000 or something of
that nature. Your problem reminds me of a couple of engineering
departments I know of. They standardized on a PC platform running AutoCAD
thinking it would suit there needs, but got left behind trying to keep up
with vendors running Catia on real work stations. So now the PCs are used
as drafting tables instead of design aids.
Thats not to say that using a PC to do engineering work is a bad thing its
just that you have a growth problem centered around a couple of things.
These are: 1. MS operating systems, 2. 32 bit address space, 3. very poor
scalability, 4. Floating Point as an after thought. Of these the one
thing that sneaks up on many PC users is the 32 bit address space issue.

If the 2 versions are different minor versions and not teeny versions,
then there should be no conflict if you leave the 2 on the same system.
But you can only set it up so the compiler links to one of them, the
other will be just runtime support.

By default the nn-tk binary isn't built. You have to uncomment the #define
TK line in the "config.h" file. I already replied to a previous post,
thought you might like to know.

Subject: NT-linux dual boot
Date: Sat, 6 Mar 1999 02:25:21 GMT
Hi,
I had linux and NT working on my machine in perfect harmony.
After upgrading to redhat 5.2, NT won't boot anymore.
The NT partition seems to be intact. I can mount it
and all seems well.
I am missing a file called Bootsect.dos, that one of the
HOWTO's mentions but everything else is there.
When I boot through LILO, I get the NT boot selector, and select
NT. NTDETECT works, but NTLOADER gives the error message:
cannot find:
<WINNT>System32/ntoskrnl.exe
or
cannot find:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)parition(3)/WINNT/System32/ntoskrnl.exe
if started in safe mode
but ntoskrnl.exe is there. Is Bootsec.dos the problem? (shouldn't
be since it is able to run ntdetect.com)
Any suggestions would be much appriciated!
Thanks,
Trausti

That would be correct provided you type the following command line:
xntp -c /etc/ntp.conf
and you only want to sync to one ntp server. If you want to sync to more
than one server add them on separate lines to your ntp.conf file. If you
want to automatically run xntp at start up you will also need to add an init
start file into rc2.d to initiate the daemon.
Hope this helps.

Is the system you are starting x applications on, taking longer to start due cpu
or memory
resources being maxed out? Run 'top' on the x server machine and view the stats.
After looking at my setup, the .xinitrc file in my home directory has 'exec
fvwm95' as the last line.
This starts fvwm95. The .fvwm95rc should be copied to users home directories to
customize there
X session. By default the system uses 'system.fvwm95rc' unless a user has there
own .fvwm95rc.
The xinitrc, xinitrc.fvwm95, or .xinitrc matters first though, I believe...
Hope this gets you farther...

The problem is that I am getting this error in either cases
when I boot with the system floppy already in the drive or
after LILO prompts me the choice and after I insert and try it.
It says: BOOT Couldn't find NTLDR, so I cannot boot to DOS
to do fdisk /mbr ... :(

It seems to be solving a (binary) incompatibility
problem that occurs because egcs puts some symbols
(__register_frame_info and the like) into every
executable that it makes, C or C++. (Get the
glibc-2.1 source code from sourceware.cygnus.com
and look at the FAQ file.)
I guess that some people who would like glibc-2.1
to be compilable by the FSF's official gcc would
like to know, "what is a C compiler doing putting
C++ code in everything"?

I have no problem accessing that Web site with Netscape 4.5 installed on
RedHat 5.2 with the following libraries installed:
glibc-2.0.7-29
libc-5.3.12-28
Interesting site. Bookmarked it right away.

Do `ldd xephem' to find out exactly what motif version is was
compiled for. If Motif 2.x then lesstif may or may not work with it
anyway as it is Motif 1.2 compatible (some 2.x stuff has been added
to the latest, though).
Maybe you could find a statically-linked version of xephem.
Your mail server runs under Motif?
Anyway, another newsgroup that may be of help is

Some other related groups with low or no traffic (it seems) are

I may be missing something but UMSDOS runs on top of a FAT
file system. You state that the UMSDOS ``partition'' is _on_
a win95b partition, ereforthay there's nothing to convert to
since it is already on FAT32 (this assumes Win95b is using
FAT32 which I think it does).
[tick tock tick tock. Getting my head out of my arse...]
I think there was discussion around here recently about
UMSDOS not supporting(?) or taking advantage of whatever it
is that makes FAT32 what it is (LFNs?).
If UMSDOS supported FAT32 directly it could also do away with
the EMD files (--linux-.---) or at least handle them in a way
to take advantage of LFNs since 8.3 is no longer an issue.
Anyway, maybe check dejanews for recent discussions.

Subject: 2.2.1 module problems HELP!
Date: Sat, 06 Mar 1999 00:38:02 +0000
Hi!
I saw a friend of mine upgrade to the 2.2.1 kernel, thought I would
give it a try (2.2.2 will not compile, errors out when compiling
tunnel.o, or one of those networking files). I read the Changes file and
upgraded to their specs. After recompiling the kernel many times, I
still cannot get the following to work:
#1 The kernel will not auto load any modules! kmod will not work! (yes,
I have it enabled in make config)
At first, my old version (2.0.35) would load modules just fine,
but now it will not load them either! (Using kerneld)
#2 My modem serial port is always busy. All apps that use my modem
report "/dev/ttyS2: Device or Resource unavailable"
But my mouse works. (serial mouse)
#3 I cannot get my ZIP Drive to work (old driver), I have tried all
combinations of modules and compiling it into the
Kernel, and parport into a module, or in the kernel, turning
auto probe on and off..... ect. I have not tried to use my
printer yet, (on the second port) Anyone got ppa (old driver)
working as a module under 2.2.X ?
Anyone have any ideas?? thanks! - Jeremy

What a minute are you using an NT boot disk? I'm getting a little confused here. Do
you have a plain old
dos disk? Not NT, not RH boot just plain old dos boot disk. If you put that in the
floppy and turn on
your computer it will boot and come up with a dos prompt. a:\>. Then type fdisk /mbr.
If that doesn't
work there is some problem.
Is bios looking to boot the floppy before the HD. What I mean is unless you changed
something or there is
a problem, you can always boot up a dos floppy. It doesn't matter what is on your MBR.
If you can try
your DOS boot disk on another machine and see if it does boot. That will eliminate the
boot disk as the
problem. You said you disconnected the HD. disconnect both HD's and try your boot
disk. If that doesn't
work you have the wrong type of boot disk or maybe you have a hardware problem, but I
don't think so. I
can't think of much else that could be the problem. A DOS boot disk is a DOS boot disk.

I have no problems using Netscape 4.5 and 2.2.0 and 2.2.1 to access
Freshmeat. I use SuSE 6.0 and an updated Netscape 4.5 from ftp.suse.com.

NOTICE: Please request help on comp.os.linux.help or one of the other
linux newsgroups, leaving this one for miscellaneous discussions.
I, for one, am only answering couple of help requests at most per day
on this newsgroup, just for the opportunity to post this notice.
The error message means some program couldn't find the UTMP file.
I think you just need an empty one owned by root with 644 privileges.
On my sys that would be made with ">/var/run/utmp".
Do "man utmp" for more details and where it should be on your sys.

Uh, you want some spaces. '' ogin: mu_userame assword: my_passwd"
As the debuggin says, you script expects the long phrase ogin:my_username, and will
send
asseord:my_password if the former ever arrives.

I suggest that you immediately change your password-- a million people
now know this one!
It would help if you did not run together your lines. (Is this being sent from
a Win machine?

It wants you to use chap 80 ( a MS special)

^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^
You reject it. and thereafter they hang up on you after they have digested your
refusal
Your pppd may support chap 80 ( make sure you fill in teh chap-secrets file
Or it may not in which case you can recompile it
See README.CHAPMS in the source code for pppd
