This suggests that you have the runtime part of Xpm installed, but not the
development part. To link to the cited shared libraries, you need (the
symbolic link) libXpm.so. The development package would also contain the
relevant #include files and so forth.

Hello !

The lpr command seems to ad a form feed to the end of anything I print.

Even a one line file is printed out on a seperate page.

How can I filter out the form feed that seems to be appended?

Thanks for any help.

It's not necessary. My ISA free PC runs fine w/o isapnp and an ES1370 card.

Hi *,

I still need a quick solution for my problem: the Kernel (2.2.17) swaps out
programs just to keep cache memory. But it should just decrease cache memory
when an application allocates more memory. I don't see any advantage when 90
MB of my 128 MB are used for caching while 20 MB are swapped out. Are there
any simple "echo ... > /proc/..." commands for it?

TIA

With Windows98, a directory on a CDROM is hidden. However, with
Linux I can't "see" the directory at all. Even 'ls -al' doesn't
show it. What's up?!? Is this an is09660, ext2 or my system probelm?

Any help appreciated,

It depends on what you mean. For example, some printers require a
form-feed at the end of the last page. In Red Hat Linux, it is an option
to put one there or not. You normally do want a form-feed after each print
job to separate one from another. If you are running Red Hat Linux with a
graphical interface, start up control-panel and just configure the printer
to not put out the form feed.

OTOH, if you want to print a lot of very small (less than a page) onto a
single page, you might just doL

car filenames | lpr

I believe lpr would just thing it a long file coming into its standard
input. It would be difficult to tell what file produced each line, though.

I would let it alone on the theory that the more you try to outsmart an
operating system, the more it will outsmart you.

I have so much memory that the swapping my machine does is mostly for my
amusement. Sometimes I get 11 Megabytes of stuff swapped out even though I have
512 Megabytes of main memory. But even if the buffer space and the cache space
drop a lot, the memory manager does not necessarily bring swapped programs back
in unless I actually want them to run. It brings the swapped stuff back in only
at the last moment.

One thing to check is the permissions on the home directory and the ones above
it as well. For instance, if my web directory is called
/usr/docs/web/documentRoot/ and docs/ is set to 700, apache won't be able to
get to my page, even though I have the right permissions on all the files
and all the other directories. Apache needs at least execute permissions
on your web directory, and read permissions on all the files.

The other thing that can cause 403 errors is settings in the httpd.conf file
or .htaccess file (if you have one). But unless you're using the
http://foo.mydomain.com/~myname/ method of accessing your files (the UserDir
option) your default httpd.conf file shouldn't give you that trouble.

Without more information, it's tough to give any helpful suggestions-- all
I can offer is solutions to problems that I've seen on other systems.

Hmmm... but then... VMware ran fine with 128 MB RAM on some WinNT 4.0 box...
but now when things are reversed (running VMware on Linux, NT as a guest OS)
memory usage seems to be less efficient... at least for a *workstation*. Is
there a kernel patch available out there, let's say
"low-mem-workstation-2.2.x-patch"? Or is there any source on the web where I
can get information about Linux' memory management? The few I found were far
too technical (nope, I am not a Linux newbie).

I've narrowed it down further. Apparently during the upgrade the
release hasn't changed?? It shoud be 2.2.16-22 but in actual fact it's
2.2.14-5.0. This should explain why it was having module
decrepencies.
How can I get the OS release to 2.2.16-22??

Edit /etc/lilo.conf and make sure you have a section in there kind of
like so:

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-22
   root=/dev/XXX
   label=linux

And edit the entry that points to the old kernel so it'd like so:

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14
   root=/dev/XXX
   label=old

The image= section for the new kernel should be before the image=
section for the old kernel if you want to boot the new kernel by
default. The upgrader probably wouldn't update /etc/lilo.conf if you've
changed it yourself. Of course, if a vmlinuz-2.2.16 kernel isn't in
/boot, then you should probably find it and install it.... HTH,

When you mount the filesystem, some messages should be sent to the
kernel's message buffer. You can see the latest messages in this buffer
by hitting Ctrl-Alt-F10 on some systems, or entering "dmesg" on all
systems. The messages should say something like:
  ISO9660 Extensions:  Joliet
  Switching to secondary root
if it's a Joliet CD. Windoze doesn't use Rock Ridge for anything. If
you don't have Joliet support compiled into your iso9660 module, you may
have to recompile that module. That's unlikely, as every distro I've
seen puts Joliet support into their iso9660 module.

Or you could try something like the following:

  mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom -o nojoliet,norock
which will disable all Rock Ridge and Joliet extensions. The filenames
will all be in 8+3 format, but you should be able to see everything on
the CD no matter what.

This is strange--why would anyone mark a directory on a CD-ROM as
"hidden"?  Oh well, HTH,

It could be one other thing, if the CD is a multisession CD and the
drive is not. I had this problem with a photo cd and one of my old
CD drives.

This is one of those FAQs. Your current directory isn't on your search
path for executables. If you want to run a program in the current
directory you must specify the path to the program. The simplest way to
do this is to use . to refer to the current directory. So, you run the
program with something like:
  ./program
You could tell bash to check your current directory by altering the
PATH variable but this is not recommended for reasons of security.

Or you could just let the installation process put a bootloader such as
LILO or Grub on the first hard drive. This would allow you to dual-boot
between Windows and Linux without the need for a boot floppy.

First, it was quite silly to cross post to so many groups. If you're gonna'
cross post, please limit it to two or three groups.

Second, I know how but I'm not going to tell you 'cause it's a bad idea.
Instead, login as a user and use the command "su - root".
