Don't uninstall 5.0. Simply run the install script from the upgrade.
I don't remember if it finds your SO5 installation directory; if it
doesn't, just specify it, and it takes everything from there.

Sounds to me like you are running Gnome and the gnome-session is dying.
Perhaps you should look at upgrading glib and gtk+, which may force a
recompile of all your gnome stuff. I believe that GIMP relies on gtk+,
which is probably your point of failure.

There is not any CD-RW software that I am aware of. So you can't do the
DirectCD like stuff. However, you can erase a CD-RW from cdrecord and then
record over it. Something like this:
cdrecord speed=2 dev=0,0 blank=fast

Date: Fri, 9 Apr 1999 18:42:39 +0200
Hi,
I am considering buying either LS120 or ZIP drive. In any case it will
be the parallel-port version ( in order to share/move data between some
computers running Linux, some of them have no Internet access ). They both
give about 100-120MB and cost also almost the same ( forget the disks, I
won't need many ).
Which one should I buy ? And why ?
What is the reliability of data stored on their disks ? Is LS120 better
then ZIP ?
What is the effective ( not what the producer says ) transfer rate
between such an external-parallel-port drive and the PC ? Which one is
better and how much ?
Thanks in advance,
Jacek.

Okay, several people have replied to me personally but couldn't help much
since I didn't provide any sort of source code or more specific
information. Sorry for my lack of clarity. I'm just a lower division
comp sci student. I don't know what the hell i'm doing. ; ) So rather
than bombard this list with the source code some requested I provide I
thought it'd be better if I tried to pinpoint the problem because what can
you really tell me if you can compile my source code on your machine, but
I can't compile it on mine? Like I've said, I'm sure there's nothing
wrong with my code.
Okay, get to the point Alicia.
Anyway, I have identified down to the line where the problem is
occurring. If I so much as even declare an ifstream I get the
segmentation fault. This is a huge problem since almost every program I
write requires that i read from a data file. So I guess it must be
something in my setup, but I really have no idea how to fix this. I
don't know how g++ works, I just use the damn thing. So i hope i've
provided adequate information this time that someone might be able to help
me out more. Advice will be greatly appreciated it.

Sounds as if he hasn't recompiled the kernel for sound support, but has
simply installed KDE.
Michael: What do you mean by the "sound process"? kaudioserver and
kwmsound? Have you recompiled the kernel and selected sound support? I
am quite sure you have to do that first. Read the Kernel-HOWTO and the
Sound HOWTO. If you are using debian there is a "better" way of doing
the compiling and installing, (using dpkg-something to build and dpkg -i
to install) but I cannot remember exactly where to find the docs. If you
do have debian, you can contact me at my email address for more info.
Otherwise, the Kernel-HOWTO should help.

Subject: Where's the source code?
Date: Fri, 09 Apr 1999 17:54:21 GMT
I need help from the Linux community to find a resource that I am sure exists.
I have been a a FreeBSD user for a couple years now, but at work I now have to
setup and live in a Linux world. The problem is how do I get real access to
sources for Linux?
In FreeBSD the sources for the entire system (not just the kernel) is located
in one central CVS respository. To upgrade by system with the latest fixes. I
merely have to do a 'cvsup' to update to the latest source snapshot and then
type 'gmake world' to build everything. I just need to decide if I want to
live on the 'stable' contour or the hairy edge.
Third party packages are equally nice. I cd to /usr/ports and the pick one of
the 2000 packages that are maintained. Type 'gmake' and it ftps the sources,
applies any patches, build the problem, and then installs is in /usr/local
according to a consistant naming convention. Package dependancies are tracked
and required packages are built automaticly.
In the linux world I have only tried RedHat. Everything installs great and
works, but sources are almost an afterthought. There appears to be no
automatic way to track bug fixes. You almost have to keep up with all the
mailing lists and continously fix problems in parallel. And then fixes and
distributed has binaries RPMs. Why? Installing an insolated update RPM is
dangerous because you then have a combination of programs that is different
that everyone else in the world.
In FreeBSD by forcing all updates to filter though the same CVS tree you can
be assured that all new changes work together correctly.
How about an equilivant to /usr/ports? Is there a service that provides
wrappers to all the great open source software so everything builds and
installs consistantly. Something where everything builds from source and I
can fix problems?
Is there another Linux distribution that works the way I want?
Please I really don't want to have a FreeBSD vs Linux flame war. I
understand the very difference worlds they live in. FreeBSD is a run by a
central group of dictators and Linux is wild and free. But surely the OS
that is all about Open Source should make sources easier to get?
I realize this post is flame bait, but hopefully so reasonable people will
respond.

I understand that Gimp doesn't support CMYK color separations, which makes it
useless for print media.
Haven't looked at the latest version, though.
Other than that, it is excellent. Great for web gifs and jpegs.

Gimp is not a professional printer's package - it's excellent
for Web graphics, and obviously zero cost is an incentive
to use it but if you're already using Photoshop then I don't
see much point in you changing over.
