Date: Thu, 09 Mar 2000 04:09:44 GMT

I have compiled the 2.3.48 kernel and applied the 2.3.49 patch. I am
able to insmod usbcore.o, usb-uhci.o, and acm.o. I get modem lights and
it appears to be ready to go. I created a new device under /dev/usb
call ttyACM0 (this was from the HOWTO doc).

Then I've tried to access this device with minicom with no luck. Can
anyone recommend a good comm.package and/or a PPP dialing package?

I've tried to compile Wvdial and it fails. My ultimate goal is to dial
out to an ISP.

Thanks,

Daniel

Check out http://www.linuxdoc.org. There are the Bootdisk HOWTO,
the Linux-From-Scratch HOWTO, etc. Both deal with this question.

It is not an Apache problem. It is a Windows one since that's
filesystem is case insensitive. The Unix filesystems are case
sensitive. I don't think there is much you can do about it but who knows.

3com... 3schmom :)

I've never understood people spending $$$$$ for 3com, Intel, USR, etc... for
modems, ethernet, etc...

I think I spent $30 on a D-Link DFE530-TX+ (fast ethernet)

D-Link seems to have pretty decent support (drivers source, etc...)

I had a cheap CNet pnp/jumperless software-configurable card that worked
fine with ne2000 drivers... but it wasn't fast ethernet... so I bought the
D-Link card.

I also have a Davicom9102 fast-ethernet (onboard NIC) that works fine...

usually just takes a little bit of research...

Hello:

My roommates and I recently got caller id for our apartment. I'd like to
have caller id functionality on my computer.

I checked freshmeat for available caller id software, and couldn't really
find anything I particularly liked.

Right now I simply have minicom running, and any messages from the modem
are echoed to the screen (in particular, caller id information). The
problem with this "solution" though is that minicom locks the modem. So
to use ppp, I have to quit minicom, then restart minicom after ending ppp.

I was wondering if there is a simple way to use built-in Linux
functionality to monitor caller id. What I would like is to have
something (e.g. syslog) log caller id information from the modem, without
locking the device. Ideally, I would have a log such as
/var/log/caller_id.log, then open up a small xterm and run "tail" on
/var/log/caller_id.log. This way, the most recent caller is always
displayed in the xterm, and I have scrollback history.

Does anyone know if I can implement such a thing relatively simply?

Thanks,
Matt

Hi all-

I'm a relative newbie. I've Redhat 6.1 running with the KDE. I like
the Biff applet that runs on the K panel to notify me when I have mail,
but it's preconfigured to launch kMail when you click on it. After
finding it adequate, I prefer Netscape's e-mail client, Messenger.

The Biff setup dialog box has a place to specify which e-mail client to
launch, but I don't know what command to put there.

I don't know the command to launch Messenger, and I don't know where to
find it. I also don't know if there are any options (like "-check" for
kmail) that I can use with Messenger.

Can someone please help me?

Thanks.

I'm probably going to start a war here, but I'm gonna ask anyway...

Which distribution of Linux do you guys think is best?? I am setting up
a low volume web server to do personal and (hopefully) small commercial
serving. I am currently running FreeBSD on my webserver, but I think
I'm going to move to Linux, because there is more software available,
and software is ported quicker.

So, do you guys recommend a long time player like Redhat or Slackware,
or is the new player, Corel, worthwhile. I haven't been following Linux
closely for a while, so all comments, suggestions, ideas, etc. are
appreciated.

Thanks!

Ultimately, the best distribution is the one you like the best. Try and
get ahold of a non-production machine and spend a couple weeks playing
with different distributions. They can all be configured to do more or
less the same things, the biggest difference between distributions are
defaults and installation.

Personally, I'm a long time Debian user. I've never had any problems with
the Debian Linux system (well, no problems I didn't create myself).
Debian is usually given pretty high marks for security and stability (from
a defaults perspective).

Have fun,
Matt

I was playing with a file under /etc/rc.d/rc3.d.
Could this be the cause?

This computer has RedHat Linux 5.2, Win95 and NT4.
NT OS loader is used to load LILO.
Win95 and NT4 work fine.
But it would stop after printing out "LIL-" when linux was selected
from NT OS loader.

Thanks a lot.

hello!

dunno about tape drives (being a novice myself) but...

add a user with "adduser" or "useradd" commands. like this:
#adduser newuser

then you gotta give them a password using the "passwd" command:
#passwd newuser
you are done.

true you cant log in via telnet as root. security issue i guess (pass
transferred as plain text) BUT... you can log in as normal user an then
use the "su" command to go root.

try manpages for commands to get the specifics.

Subject: PPP problems, please give me a hint
Date: Thu, 09 Mar 2000 09:05:28 +0100

Can anyone help me with this,

I'm using Redhat 6.1, kernel 2.2.12-20 as a server for a small LAN
I have succeeded in establishing a ppp-connection to my ISP a couple of
times. But most of the times I won't succeed.

The funny thing is that it always work when I use a new tty (i.e. with
ctrl-alt-F1 to F6) for the first time. According to the system log
everything is fine.

In my conf.modules host, I have two lines (according to the
README.linux, for the current PPP-release, whatever its number is, I
just downloaded the newest version a few days ago and used the Redhat
Package Manager to install it):

alias zzz-char-108 ppp_something
alias blablabla ppp_generic

(where zzz is something. Can't really remember the details, because I'm
at work now and the machine is at home, but it's checked for spelling
and everything).

Then I disconnect and try to connect again. Looking at the system log,
it says something like:

: modprobe: can't locate module zzz-char-108

Well that didn't occur the first time. Then the log says:

: Serial connection established

and nothing else happens. Eventually there is some time-out somewhere
and I get disconnected.

I use pppd with an options file and chat-script that has been provided
by my ISP, and I think that they are correct.

Am I doing something wrong here? One thing I wonder is if I do something
wrong when I disconnect, so that something does not get restored in a
correct manner. I have used a ppp-off script that (I think) is provided
with the PPP-package.

Please give me any hints.

Hi there
X normally starts a plain xterm without executing the "profile" file.
You can type "bash -login" or start the xterm with "xterm -e /bin/bash
-login" and your aliases will be there.

What about these options from smb.conf?

# Case Preservation can be handy - system default is _no_
# NOTE: These can be set on a per share basis
; preserve case = no
; short preserve case = no
# Default case is normally upper case for all DOS files
; default case = lower
# Be very careful with case sensitivity - it can break things!
; case sensitive = no

Check "man smb.conf" for all the gory details.

/var/run/ftp.pids-all: No such file or directory

That's a lot of errors.... I tried uninstalling, re-installing, even
upgraded to pam-0.68-10, NO CHANGE!

This seems bizarre because everywhere I look it says that /etc/pam.conf
is not necessary with recent PAM's?! Also, the file
/var/run/ftp.pids-all didn't exist, I created it, even made it
world-read/writable (...): STILL no change!

Telnet, login etc. work just fine and do not generate any authentication
messages, so I assume PAM is working. So what on earth is going on?

More info:

I guess that in Windows NT, I'd just have reinstalled the entire OS by
now, but....

I'd love to play with the source but I just don't have the time. Thanks
for any pointers.

BTW: Is it necessary to stop inetd before upgrading/installing daemons
started in inetd?
