That is probably why, whenever I compiled my kernel and renamed it to
vmlinuz the system refused to boot.

Subject: Help for STB nVidia ZX video card

We have several new Dell Dimension XPS R450.
They come with STB nVidia ZXV 8MB 3D 2xAGP video card
and Dell Trinitron (Ultracsan 1600HS) 21' minotor.
after we installed Linux Redhat5.2, we couldn't
get the right color resolution.(I mean , the pictures
looks BAD).
While retry several times with Xconfigurator,
we found the best emulator is Diamond 3D (nv1).
I called STB, they told me STB nVidia ZXV 8MB 3D 2xAGP
is same as STB Velocity 128 (which is listed in Redhat5.2's
driver list in Xconfigurator), but it failed to
emulate STB Velocity 128.
Anyone one happened to know where I can get driver
for this video card?(I tried search on web but couldn't
find).
thanks a lot!

Well I have it working now. Thanks everyone for the tips and pointers.
I ended up using /etc/ppp/ip-up.local to handle everything. It gets
the local ip address as a command line parameter. Then it echos it to
a file and calls an expect script in /root/bin which uploads the file
to the web server.

This is really great. My next step will be to integrate this into an
html file (using sed in all likelyhood, since I am woefully bad at
perl) so that my top-level page on the server links to files on the
local httpd.

Anyone wanting the expect script can email me, although I imagine most
everyone here could do it better. ;)

>Does anyone know of a driver for a USR 56K WinModem for Linux.

As a general rule of thumb, the inexpensive "winmodems" require the OS to
do the lion's share of the computation a modem performs. This
requires a special, complicated interface to the modem.

Since the companies do not tell Linux developers how to talk to these
winmodems, and since making a driver for these modems is very complicated,
I do not expect a driver for any WinModem to appear in the foreseeable
future.

With Linux, the best best for a modem is an external serial modem that
talks the Hayes command set.

This is a seriously frequently asked question. See any of the
archives. If you see this, then the other side is most likely not
running PPP.

> Even if I put the debug option in "options" file, I got nothing more...

That means that your syslogd is misconfigured. You'll need to send
*.debug to the file.

Most ISPs do NOT want you to do that if you're using PPP. Instead,
they want you to just dial in and start using PPP, since that's what
Windoze does. If you start chatting a user name at them, then they'll
usually assume you don't speak PPP.

The problem here is most likely in the chat portion, not in PPP. Run
chat with the "-v" flag to get debug messages in syslog.

I have a Sound Blaster Vibra16X and this was recognized by Redhat 5.2
beautifully. Now, the card is then registered as having a bad or missing DMA
channel. Also, the bootup screen shows the soundcard is busy of is in use. The
other hardware is a 3com 3c509b network card, an ISA modem (plain, old), and a
Creative Labs 3D Exxtreme graphics card. Please can, anyone help.

I see that there is a patch to the Linux Kernel 2.0.36 that regards the
Soundblaster Vibra 16X does request a DMA of 0. Is this what I need?

One way you may be able to get around these kinds of limitations is by
using the Alpha architechure. Linux runs quite nicely on the many Alpha
machines, and the Alpha has the following advantages:

* 64-bit architechure. No RAM limitations.

* Faster performance at a competitive price

* Lower cost and better performance than Sparc-based systems

I am not sure about the ability of Alpha hardware to boot without a video
card or have the bios-level stuff be available on a serial console.

However, IMO, both of these features are fluff. A cheap video card can be
had for $10 to $30, and will allow a PC-based motherboard to boot. It is
no more difficult to cart around a PC monitor and keyboard than it is to
cart around a serial terminal.

My server does not have a keyboard nor monitor connected 99% of the time,
and, when I need to directly get at the console, I simply grab a keyboard
and monitor that is on a rooling cart, attach it to the computer, and do
activities on the console.

The virtual terminals is a nice touch that I have yet to see on a serial
console.

FWIW, I found the networking setup for the Debian 2.0 install to be
quite simple. Worked with my card right off the bat, with *no* hitches.

I saw something recently that really took me off guard. Programmer's
Paradise, a staunch supporter of MS Windows, was running a full page ad
for OpenLinux. Not Caldera's, some other that packaged RH, SW, DEB, and
Caldera I believe, plus the tools to develop for it. When I saw this I
knew Linux is really beginning to be taken seriously.

An attempt to do this would probably have serious reprocussions. I don't
think BG could withstand an joint lawsuit from businesses all over the
world who communications have been cut by an MS attempt to propietize
protocols and services.

You can turn off the X-authentication warning by adding your username

This falls in the IIRC catagory, but the same discussion occured some
time back in one of the FreeBSD newsgroups, where a new audio driver
was required to run the Linux version of Real Audio. Apparently
Real Audio uses a hook in the sound driver which wasnt fully functional
to determine how much data had really been emitted by the sound card
so it could synchronize the video motion with the sound track. This
seems to cause Real Audio to draw all the CPU you can give it. The
FreeBSD port of RealAudio 3.0 (no video) with the older drivers took
very little CPU time. Supposidly sound driver updates will address
the issue, so it would not be unlikely that some Linux sound drivers
may have similar issues.
