This is in the Apache FAQ:

http://www.apache.org/docs/misc/FAQ.html#set-servername

9.Why does accessing directories only work when I include the trailing
"/"
(e.g., http://foo.domain.com/~user/) but not when I omit it
      (e.g., http://foo.domain.com/~user)?

try adding the appropriate module via the kerneld part of the control

I don't know about anyone else, but I've had trouble with autoloading
modules ever since going from kernel 1.2.13 to 2.0.x. In 1.2.13, I
had almost everything running as a module. They autoloaded and unloaded
with no problems. Ever since 2.0.x, I've had nothing but trouble.
The only modules I have now are sound and iBCS, which I load at boot
time. Yes, I know about /etc/conf.modules. 8^{)

Of course, my 1.2.13 machine was a 40 MHz 386 with 8 Meg of RAM, so
it was great to unload memory when it wasn't needed. With today's
machines having 64 to 128 Meg or more, saving 50K of RAM doesn't
seem like such a big deal anymore. 8^{)

PWD=`basename \`pwd\``

The backslash character means that the character following it
loses its special significance and is treated as an ordinary
character. Without it the second backquote character will terminate
the command started with the first one, with the result that
you have two commands "`basename `" and "``".

If you look in the slashdot archives for the article on seti@home, you
will see a few folks are indeed talking about this, including JWZ (of
xscreensaver fame.) However the SETI people also say that they've got
an X11 screensaver in the works as well. So in light of that, it's
not clear if the independent efforts will materialize something or
not.

pyjamas: Why would you want to spoil a nice, clean Slackware install
with an .rpm?! Just get the glib-1.2.tar.gz package and compile it
yourself.

jik-: First, glib-1.2 != glibc2. Second, Slacks own rpm2tgz seems to be
a bit buggy. I use alien (http://kitenet.net/programs/alien/) instead
in the very few cases where a .tar.gz is not available (there has only
been one so far actually, and that was the Voodoo^2 Glide library).

Have you tried moving the drive to hdc? My Mitsumi cdr won't write
reliably jumpered as a slave. It also gives comparable SCSI errors (whether
master or slave) if I open the draw of my other cdrom which is on the same
channel. I've had very little joy when trying to write cds using xcdroast
(because I haven't taken the time to set it up properly), but using cdrecord
directly from the command line I've only minced one cd.
I'm using cdrecord 1.8.x with kernel 2.2.5 and having no problems that
aren't due to me doing silly things like starting kernel compiles whilst
writing cds ;)
    what does
            cdrecord -v -dummy -speed=4 dev=[whatever] -audio [file]
give? Do dummy writes fail? Does altering speed= make a difference?

Subject: hdparm
Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 15:06:33 +0000

I have been trying to see if I could get better performance from my hard
drives, by using hdparm, and I have a couple of questions that I hope
someone can answer.

I have RedHat 5.1, running on a Celeron processor, with an Asus P2B
motherboard (BX chipset).

When I run "hdparm /dev/hdb", it shows 0 on everything except readahead
(8), and of course geometry. I would have thought that with a
relatively new motherboard, it would have known enough about the chipset
to use some of the performance features, such as 32-bit I/O, at least.
It does allow me to set options -c 3 -d 1 -X 34 -m 8, and when I did
this and ran a couple of test ("find" on the whole partition, test mode
in hdparm, etc), it seemed to work ok. Then later I decided to write a
small script to set these modes, with the intention of putting in one of
the startup scripts. When I ran the script, the machine immediately
hung. So I guess at least one of those modes isn't stable on my system.

So I guess my question is, should it be possible to run with something
more than "slowest possible mode" on this system? Or could it be the
drives? They are both less than a year old, Ultra DMA, etc.

Thanks for any info

Kenneth Harrington

Another funny thing with GIF, GNOME and The Gimp: When I try to save a
GIF my disk does not stop to work. First I got panic. Before installing
GNOME this did not happen. So your "theory" seems to be true.

Another advantage that Red Hat offers is its "kickstart" installation

repeated installations.

I may not be able to solve your problem but I can tell you that the
message you see ("lspci...") is not a problem. It just means that a
separate utility (lspci) is not installed so the isapnp can't use it to
get a list if IRQs used by PCI devices. There could be an underlying
problem that there is an IRQ conflict which you might want to look for,
but it doesn't look like that is your problem.

You can install the lspci utility by installing the package pciutils
from the "a" series. (I don't have it installed and that hasn't been a
problem.)

Date: Fri, 9 Apr 1999 16:55:45 -0400

Running redhat.... try this....
(as a user)
startx
start an xterm, or kvt, or konsol, or wterm, or whatever.
su root
control-panel &
click on kernel control panel button,
add eth 0 (you shouldn't have to enter any options for it)
  click restart kerneld
(if you see it complain in the term that kerneld: command not found, then
you need to quit the control panel, and add /sbin, or was it /usr/sbin, to your
path:
     # PATH=$PATH:/sbin:/usr/sbin
and restart the control panel and add ethernet again)
click the network control panel button
configure the eth0 interface to your liking.

That should be it. You may want to restart and see if it loads automatically on
boot. If not, then you'll have to figure that out from there :-) but you should
be able to use it right away.

Good luck,

Josh I.
BTW- you shouldn't have to re-install completely ever... unless doing a major
upgrade (like 4.2-5.2 or something) in which case it's just easier that way.
