I am trying to upgrade my 586 system from 2.0.34 to 2.2 but I get the
following error trying to run "make menuconfig" :

rm -f include/asm
( cd include ; ln -sf asm-i386 asm)
make -C scripts/lxdialog all
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux/scripts/lxdialog'
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/scripts/lxdialog'
/bin/sh scripts/Menuconfig arch/i386/config.in
Using defaults found in arch/i386/defconfig
Preparing scripts: functions, parsing...............................done
.
There seems to be a problem with the lxdialog companion utility
which is
built prior to running Menuconfig. Usually this is an indicator that
you
have upgraded/downgraded your ncurses libraries and did not remove the
old ncurses header file(s) in /usr/include or /usr/include/ncurses.

It is VERY important that you have only one set of ncurses header files
and that those files are properly version matched to the ncurses
libraries
installed on your machine.

You may also need to rebuild lxdialog. This can be done by moving to
the /usr/src/linux/scripts/lxdialog directory and issuing the
"make clean all" command.

If you have verified that your ncurses install is correct, you may email
the maintainer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> or post a message to
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> for additional assistance.

make: *** [menuconfig] Error 139

I have rebuilt lxdialog with no problems. ncurses appears to be OK as
the test programs in /usr/doc/ncurses-devel-4.2-10 work fine.

What does this error(139) really mean?

"make config" works ok, but when I get to "make dep" I get the following
similar error:

scripts/mkdep init/*.c >.depend
make: *** [dep-files] Error 139

Any help greatly appreciated.

The fastest printing will usually happen with either well-tuned
polling frequencies or good parport hardware and interrupts.

Since you are running 2.0, you can use tunelp to adjust the polling
frequencies and print at the full speed of the printer. man tunelp.

Why? Is it a binary-only driver or something? It may be just as
well; there are a host of little things to fiddle with when you
upgrade. There's no rush...

That sounds as if your system has an interrupt confusion. All too
often, the parport's IRQ will get used by something else since most
systems don't use an interrupt-driven parport driver. You can either
figure out what the interrupt problem is or just don't bother.

In 2.0.x, there are a number of polling frequency-related parameters
you can fiddle, and they work wonders. You need to find the
equivalent in the parport_pc driver. Consult the source!

Subject: Problems installing glibc 2.0.7 with SUSE 6.0
Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 20:08:22 +0200

Hi,

I'm trying to install StarOffice 5.0 on my SUSE 6.0 Linux system but I
can't get it done
because of library problems. I tried to install the glibc 2.0.7
libraries both manually and
automatically (using soprep) but in all cases my Linux system is not
accesible anymore.
Normal commands like ls or mv cannot be found anymore, I can't login
anymore, etc.

This is in short what happens: Everytime the original runtime Linker
"ld-linux.so.2" is
removed, my system stops functioning. When I (after booting a rescue
system) copy the new
runtime linker to "/lib", my system is still not functioning. Only
reinstalling the original
"ld-linux.so.2" restores my system. I'm very sure I'm doing exactly what
has to be done according to the glibc 2.0.7 libraries README but I
cannot get it done.

Does anyone know a solution for this or does this mean I cannot use
StarOffice 5.0 with SUSE 6.0 Linux?

I hope someone can help me with this problem because I don't know it
anymore.

Thanks!

Berry

Partition Magic is your friend. Buy (or find) it.

Check out the debian-user mailing list archives
(http://www.debian.org/Lists-Archives/); Debian versus Red Hat is a
discussion that resurfaces every once in a while.
