Red Hat hasn't been noted for releasing "*.3" versions at all. They
tend to do a "major version revision" by that time.

More particularly, they have been calling "Rawhide" version 5.9, which
is rather supportive of the next release being 6.0.

It is likely that they have frozen 6.0, or are about to, and will
shortly send it out to the printers so they can start stamping CDs,
boxes, and books. They have been known to do releases the week of Linux
Expo, which starts on about May 15th. It wouldn't be too remarkable to
see a release slightly before that, but *much* earlier would be a
surprise.

bzip2 compresses about 30% more than gzip, resulting in smaller
archives. Apart from that, I don't know --

Virtual CDs? You mean the loopback device which allows a file to be
mounted like a device? This is a standard Linux deal, not RedHat. So
far I have only used it with mkisofs but I think you can create one with
dd as well. Read the CD-Writing-HOWTO.

You usually create an iso9660 filesystem (which is a file which will
later be burned onto the CD) and then you mount it and verify its
integrity, if its good you burn it.

you need mkisofs or dd (dd is part of Linux, mkisofs is an extra
utility) and loopback device compiled into the kernel.

mount -o loop file -t iso9660 /mnt

Not exactly, but you might find something useful in

http://www.aa.net/~swear/pedia/embedded.html (you'll need to dig)
http://www.aa.net/~swear/pedia/promotion.html (examples section near end)

If you spend about 37 US$ for a foreign subscription to the Linux
Journal, you can access their on-line archive of LJ articles. They've
had many articles on industrial and laboratory applications. You can
probably check their article index (and a few articles) without the
subscription.

It means you have succesfully configure the kernel, so you have to type :
"make dep ; make clean" in order to prepare the configuration.
Then you have to type : "make zImage" or "make bzImage" or anything you
need, it depends on you.

Ah, end when you say "1.2.13" as version number, try http://www.kernel.org ,
there is the version 2.2.5 wich is out, it may help if you have other
problems.

Subject: crc error when booting RedHat 5.1 (2)
Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 18:20:41 +0100

Yes I do dual boot. All was fine with both operating systems (Linux and
Win95), when I was using a Pentiun 166 chip. Only when I upgraded to the
233 MMX did the problems begin.

Windows continued to boot fine, but I started to have some small problems
after installing the new chip. Linux on the other hand refused to boot
returning the crc error message.

I then tried to reinstall RedHat with the installation/boot disk but got the
same error message.

I have also received the same crc error when using a nearly dead IBM 6x86MX
PR200. That was on an other system. so the results have no direct affect on
my current system.

Because of the results with the IBM chip this is why I am thinking that I
have been sold a dodgy chip. Is linux smart enough to detect if the chip
has been overclocked before and been damaged. I know from previous
experience that windows will continue to run a faulty chip and only crash
every now and again giving you enough cause to think that it could be a
software problem.

Is the crc error message a legitimate error after the Uncompressing linux
message appears at boot time.

Thanks again.

David

P.S. To the best of my knowledge I have set all my jumper settings to the
correct setting for my 233 MMX chip.

In most cases. I have actually had 'bzip2 -9' perform markedly worse than
'gzip -9' on several occasions, but for the most part, bzip2 will win in
compression performance.

Also, because of the design of the bzip2 algorithm, the bzip2 compression time
is slow (and is at its worst for 'bzip2 -9') compared to gzip, which is zippy
(no pun intended) at all levels of compression.

Depends on how you get online. If you use minicom to gets online
you can deal with the modem directly - there is a trick to suspend
the modem and than type something like at commands to show the
statistic, after that you can resume it.

If you are using Kppp to dial into an ISP then Kppp has a graph to
show you the speed (not accurate if you use a local proxy server).
I use WindowMaker 0.52, the wmppp dock icon show me bytes transfer
per second in a small graph - if this is what u want.

Connection speed is a constant, online the transfer rate is different
over time. Also, data travel in a network is always in packets,
like letter from postoffice, you can wait for seconds or minutes
untill the next packet come so transfer rate is only an approximation.

Hi,

I don't know how to fix the problem, but I can tell you that this has happened
too me too. My system (IDE drives) had separate Win98 and Linux partitions
on the same disk.
When Win98 crashed, it occasionally corrupted my Linux partition. I discovered
this by booting from my rescue disk and running `fdisk`.

I have yet to figure out why this is happening. I'm eventually going to install
a separate hard drive for Linux. Hopefully, this will fix the problem.

Does anyone have any insights on this one?

Do you have the RedHat 5.2 CDs?

If so you have Sybase 11.0.3.3 on the third CD.

Free.

Also for deployment.

It's not the latest Sybase release available on other platforms (that's 11.9.2/3),
but it's plenty good enough for what you have in mind, and commercial support as well
as the latest releases are in the pipeline.

Right, but that only works if you noticed it fast enough.
A fork bomb should better be avoided by limiting the number of
processes and/or the memory that a single user may be using at a
given time. See "man ulimit" or "man bash" (and then scroll down until
the built-in commands get explained) .

The attitude is in no way childish or silly. The attitute is based on
the concept of reputation. Microsoft have blown their reputation in many
users' minds so those users are not willing to use Microsoft's software.

Microsoft have shown time and time again that almost all of their software
is buggy bloated crap, their business practices are suspect and that they
do not care much about users. In my mind, that has ipperairably damaged
their reputation.

I trust my experience, and in my experience using microsoft's software
is a poor deal. I'll go elsewhere thanks.

Quite. But microsoft does not appear capable if producing software of
stinkingly good quality, so I'm not going to even bother wasting my time
evaluating it. If they can change their reputation for the better, then
I may consider their software, but right now, I'll just dismiss it out
of hand.

The command to uncompress is "gunzip".
However GNU tar allows to uncompress and extract files from the archive in

No.
If a file is executable or not is determined by the executable flag, try
"ls -l".

>How do I exec a program ?

Just call it by name. Please note, that the current working directory (CWD)
usually is not in your search path, so you must use "./filename" instead of
"filename" to run a program in the CWD.

See above, it's the executable flag
