I believe that most of the responses that you will get to
this query will say that you can install most of the
distributions over the network. What they will neglect
(or incorrectly assume) is that there is a Linux machine
in the network with a CDROM drive. If you do not have one,
or, if your network is currently not set up, you will have
a tough time. I have a machine in my network named "installer".
If you have one of these, you will be in good shape.

Javascript keyboard events (OnKeyPress etc....) are not functionning at
all for my Linux XFree86 x86 version. I guess it is some X setup (key
binding ) file which isn't well configured. However I tried to modify
the /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/Netscape (RH6.0) file but it didn't fix
the problem. Maybe it is the Gnome configuration (I am using
gnome) which is involved. How knows?
Please Help !!!!!

Fixed the b/w problem by downgrading from termcap 9.13 to 9.12.

Compared to Gnome, KDE is incredibly slow. I don't know why. Good examples:
check out how long kfm needs to display a directory with many files
and how long needs gmc. The difference is incredible!!
Another example is the dialog where you can choose the icon for
a program. This also in Gnome is way faster then in KDE.
I really wonder what those KDE guys are doing there. I even have the
impression that KDE gets slower and slower with each release...

I had installed quake2, and had been playing it, no problems, from the
console.
But then, I launched it from an xterm. Quake2 ran fine but when I quit,
it said that it couldn't write a cfg file, probably a permission thing,
but then I was in a full screen text mode and nothing would get me out.
Ctrl-c, ctrl-z, alt-f1..f10 ctrl-alt-f1..f10, even alt-ctrl-del did
nothing.
Now obviously, quake2 is a console app and I shouldn't run it from an
xterm. Or should I be able to?
But when it did hang like that, what else could I have tried to do to
kill quake2 or get to another console? I forgot to try
alt-ctrl-backspace.
thx,

The best way is to test and try to see wath you think. I think both system
is exelent but the big diferense is that I must be a criminal to use WIN98
due it pretty expensive and Linux is free. For games do I always run 98 and
when when I paint and do some FTP I use Linux. A dual boot or to do like me,
put the OS on diferent primary masterHD and switch HD when you shall run
another system.
But the its important to learn that Linux people say Win sux and Win folkes
say Linux sux, This can only mean that both system i almost euqual.

No no no boot.b is part of the lilo distribution and it is on
tomsrtbt, it is just where you don't think to look for it, on
the floppy itself.
Do something like:
mount /dev/fd0u1722 /fl
cp /fl/boot.b /boot

Solaris binaries will not run (generally) on Linux. You might find a

If you use old hardware be prepared to run old apps. Expecting to run apps
built on and for Pentium class and better machines on obsolete hardware is
folly regardless of the operating system. Do they REALLY need the latest
apps? I run a business on software I bought in '93 on a 486.

I'd jump on the firewall bandwagon with the other guy.
If Linux is falling over due to high bandwidth usage, it might be
worthwhile to send a note to the linux-kernel list
(linux-kernel(at)vger.rutgers.edu). Maybe somebody will take note,
though it is a high traffic list and might get missed.
There are firewall products that you can just plug in after the
router/switch, and there are often rules you can give many smart routers/
switches to stop unwanted attacks.
>Is there some way to reconfigure my system to make it less vulnerable?
Have you turned on syncookies? Perhaps these people are trying the
infamous syn flood attack.

My problem is not a lack of software... it's more on the
hardware end... I have a parallel port midi interface
that I can't seem to find a driver for. Every other piece
of harware (mostly SCSI) that I have is recognized
by Linux with this one exception.
As for software, there's plenty available for Linux (Jazz is
what I would probably use for midi composition).

How do create menues on the root window - that is if I click on the root
window with my right button I get a pop-up menu with options. I already have
some in Gnome (RH 6.0) but I would like to add more. What file do I need to
modify?
Also:
How do make my environment point-to-raise instead of click-to-riase?
And lastly: How do I check what resolution I am running at? I have this line
in my /var/gdm/:0.log file, does that mean that I am running at full 1280x1024
mode?
(**) Mach64: Mode "1280x1024": mode clock = 110.000
It really seems that I am not getting 1280x1024 but I don't know.
And CTRL-ALT-+ does not do anything, not even in the number pad.

Ok, I just bought a Pentium 90 with the intent of installing linux on it. I
am trying to learn linux on this box. It doesnt have a cd rom however, but
it has a network card. I was planning installing it via NFS, using my other
machine which has a cdrom drive. Problem :The network card won't load in DOS
(it's running a slim version of DOS 6.22).
My question is : Since DOS won't load the driver, when I try installing
Linux via NFS, will linux recognise the Network card and start the
installation or will it fail?? The network card works fine, its just that
the driver won't load in DOS.
Thanks Much

My IP uses a different telephone number at the weekend to permit access

weekend. What I would like to have is an icon I can click on which opens
some sort of dialogu box asking for the number. When entered, the number
should replace the one in /etc/chatscript
I would even be happy having an xterm open to ask the question.
I use this sort of thing regularly on my Linux box, but I don't know how

Any help would be much appreciated.
