Do a web search for a program called Xkeyboard. This is a program that
diplays a keyboard in a window that lets you asign keys the way you
want.

Thank you very much :-)
That was just what I needed! Its up and running now.....
I tried (last night) to insert pretty much the same lines in my xinetd.conf
file, but that didn't do the trick. I would never have figured to create a
new file and insert the lines there.
Once again - thanks.

Is there a simple shell utility which takes a username/password pair,
verifies them against the user info on the system, and returns true if
the pair matches or false otherwise?

Hello,
the MBR of my harddisk has been overwritten. I had a dual boot Win/linux
setup. I don't have any bootdisk for my linux system. Is there a way I can
reinstall Lilo so that I can use both my OS'es again? Now I can only use my
Windows system. I have access to another linux box, maybe I can create a
bootdisk with this machine?

Hello,
if you don't want to go through the exteme hassle, reading
Documentation/Changes that comes
within the 2.4.0 tarball and update the requiert parts of your system, you
have to wait for a distro
that comes with 2.4.0.
Sure you wont be able to use those great new features in 2.4.0, but at
least Linus and the other great guys who made
it happen, choose the tar format.
I would recommend to try it out with the tarball, you will learn a lot of
things about Linux if you do.

If by "serial number" you mean the "volume ID", I've got a little C
program that does it. I'll append it's source below. (Note that to use
this program, the CD should NOT be mounted.) Compile it with:
cc -o getvn getvn.c
Last time I posted this, someone else posted a perl/awk/python/something
script 3-5 lines long that does more or less the same thing. Unfortunately
I don't seem to have a copy of it anymore.

Back again, I tried to install kernel 2.4.0 on my IBM thinkpad i1400 (with
upgrading the necessary packages), without succes. The modem module
(ltmodem.o) does not work (generates a bunch of errormessages) and also my
PCMCIA ethernet card takes approx 10 minutes to connect to my other PC. So
I'll go back to 2.2.14, which flawlessly conntects to my ISP and the PCMCIA
card connects within a second to my PC. Thanks for your suggestions anyway.

Hello.
We are using cups for printing on a HPLaserJet P6.
The printer is at a printserver, which is spooled by a WindowsNt-Server.
Printing is ok.
But,
when we print out of our Application, which works inside a database, we
are using our own ANSI-ESC-sequences.
That is not working!!
Printing with lpr -Pprinter
is printing the ESC-sequences on the paper.
Printing with lpr -oraw -Pprinter
is printing a single line.
So no LineFeed!?
What to do?
Thanx a lot

I would like a command line to search through all files of type .xyz
looking for text 'abc123' within those files. ( to get the file names

I know find will do the first part but how to pipe each file to

Subject: another lilo problem
Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2001 12:54:50 +0100
Hello,
I have a pc system with a 12Gb harddrive in it. I installed my Redhat distro
(7) at the end of my harddrive. I create a boot disk so I can boot my linux.
However I want to install lilo so that i don't need that annoying bootdisk
anymore. When I tried to install lilo (by executing /etc/lilo) I get the
error:
Added linux
Warning: device 0x0307 exceeds 1024 cylinder limit
Fatal: sector 17045028 too large for linear mode (try 'lba32' instead)
Lilo is not installed however. What do they mean with lba32? Is this the
harddisk mode you can set in most bios'es?
I can set it in mine however (it's a crappy Dell computer).
Someone suggested to create a small partition at the beginning of my
harddisk so that linux can boot from that. But how do I do that?
I create a linux native partition of let's say 100mb and then?
Hopefully someone can help me out...

Maybe you can write a little script?
Try to dump the filenames of type .xyz in a textfile. One filename per line.
filename1
filename2
filename3
(make sure the last filename has carriage return and linefeed behind it)
Call the text file: filelist.txt
then make a little script:
#!/bin/bash
while read filename
do
cat $filename | grep abc123 > null
if [ $? == 0 ]
then
echo $filename
fi
done < filelist.txt
Store this script in a file (script.scr or something), make it executable
and run it.
The files that match .xyz and contain the string abc123 will be displayes on
the screen.

use your install-cd, boot with it and try to get a shell (or use a other
method starting a small linux, maybe a live-cd). than mount your linux
harddisk (/mnt/linux). with "lilo -C /mnt/linux/etc/lilo.conf" lilo will
build a new MBR (if the lilo.conf is correct).
