Hello,

I've developed a device driver for linux. Now I want to provide under
the GPL.
Therefore I search for places / ftp-Servers where I can put it, so that
everyone can download it.

Can anyone tell me where to put the driver and how to make it known?

Thanks,

Subject: Kernel freeze switching Netscape windows
Date: 14 Apr 1999 15:07:53 +0200

I've had this problem occuring intermittently for a while now (perhaps
once a week), but I have only managed to reproduce it today.

The problem is that sometimes, while using Netscape, the whole machine
will seize up completely, leaving nothing to do but reboot. I know
that the kernel itself has come to a grinding halt, because I am
unable to log in remotely to my machine, and I have compiled in SysRq
key support, but it doesn't work during one of these crashes. Right
now I suspect the window manager, since it happens while switching
windows (as I'll describe in a second). I'm using FVWM2, through
RedHat's AnotherLevel. I will eventually try setting up FVWM2 from
scratch, but first I'd like to hear if anyone has any good ideas or
has seen this before, as I don't particularly want to redo all of my
configuration.

The crash has occured doing various things, and I haven't been able to
reproduce it on demand until now. These are the circumstances which
duplicate the crash: I had two Netscape widows open in a single
virtual desktop. In the back one, I was composing a post to Slashdot.
In the front one, I started loading www.npr.org. Just as the NPR page
started loading, I clicked on the top of the Slashdot window to bring
it to the front, and it froze completely. The cursor froze as a solid
circle, indicating it is in the process of bringing the window
forward. The timing is important: I have to click the back window
just as the page is beginning to load. Although I don't know the
circumstances as specificly for previous crashes, it seems to me I was
often doing somthing with the window manager: changing windows, or
virtual desktops. This is why I suspect FVWM2, although maybe it is
triggering an XFree86 bug or a hardware problem.

My software configuration:
 RedHat 5.1 with 2.2.1 kernel
 XFree86 3.3.2 (XFCom_NeoMagic-2.0.0)
Netscape 4.5 glibc version (though crashes also occured with libc5
                             versions of 4.01 and 4.5)

hardware:
 Fujitsu 656tx
video card: Neomagic MagicGraph 128ZV with chipset NM2093 and 1152k

Any insights would be appreciated.

Hello,

Was wondering if anyone could help me here. If I was to take a HD using a
BSDi filesystem and connect it to a Linux box, in theory there should be no
problems as long as I have the linux kernel configured so it could read BSD
filesystems...correct?

Cheers,

Perhaps, in true MS tradition, they'll call it Microsoft L++?

Trying to use limited resources to breach every gap in the computer
market will be the end of Microsoft - they're already stretched to
the limit rolling out Windows 2000 and are falling behind in many
other areas. Now they're trying to compete against Epoc, Jini, Java,
Linux, ....

I am running a finite element program on a remote computer
running Xwindows (Sun). The link is via dial-up modem.
There is graphics output which I redirect to my home computer
(PC running Linux). However, this is very slow...

Does anyone know of any compression software which I could
use on server/host to improve the speed of the link?
Thanks for any suggestions.

It is *far* more likely to be a bug in your code. If you write through
uninitialised pointer or beyond the bound of memory you have allocated
it is very easy to corrupt malloc's wortkspace and cause malloc
(and related calls) to crash. If you want further help post
a *minimal* but *complete* program that demonstrates the problem.

I am currently running RH 5.2. I want to enable SMP so I got kernel
2.2.4 and installed it but I get Kernel panics when linux is just
sitting around. 2.2.5 does the same thing.

Is there any way to read my current kernel config to the new kernel when
I run make xconfig so I only have to reenter new options (and SMP of
course).

Also, I read 2.2.x supports turning on SMP w/o recompiling the kernel.
Anyone know how this is done?

Thanks everyone!

It's nice that Linux can fit in with NT, but the NT boxes are doing the

In other words, they're students making due with whatever cast-off or

frustrated. ;)

For a programmer or a network guy, perhaps. I have yet to see that to be

Well, I wouldn't pick a platform on games alone, but it is a contributing
factor. But there is far more Windows software of all kinds than Linux

Red Hat 5.2 doesn't have any problem with the AIC 7880. I just install a

All you need to do is to select Adaptec 2940 during install.
Normally, it works.

Subject: crc error when booting RedHat 5.1
Date: Wed, 14 Apr 1999 11:16:33 +0100

Firstly let me appologise if this message appears several times as I seem to
be having problems connecting to my ISP.

Please can anybody tell me what crc stands for and what is the probable
cause for such an error. It was reported when I installed a (supposedly)
new Intel 233MMX chip.

The error message appears after the uncompressing linex message appears at
initial boot time.

Does this mean the chip is faulty.

Please could you provide any links to documentation on error messeges at
boot time.

Thanks in advance

Yes I do dual boot. All was fine with both operating systems (Linux and
Win95), when I was using a Pentiun 166 chip. Only when I upgraded to the
233 MMX did the problems begin.

Windows continued to boot fine, but I started to have some small problems
after installing the new chip. Linux on the other hand refused to boot
returning the crc error message.

I then tried to reinstall RedHat with the installation/boot disk but got the
same error message.

I have also received the same crc error when using a nearly dead IBM 6x86MX
PR200. That was on an other system. so the results have no direct affect on
my current system.

Because of the results with the IBM chip this is why I am thinking that I
have been sold a dodgy chip. Is linux smart enough to detect if the chip
has been overclocked before and been damaged. I know from previous
experience that windows will continue to run a faulty chip and only crash
every now and again giving you enough cause to think that it could be a
software problem.

Is the crc error message a legitimate error after the Uncompressing linux
message appears at boot time.

Thanks again.

David

P.S. To the best of my knowledge I have set all my jumper settings to the
correct setting for my 233 MMX chip.

Hi. I just got a Sony CRX-100E, 4X/24X/2X CDRW ATAPI/EIDE drive and
I'm having problems getting it to work.

I have xcdroast 0.96e (and hence cdrecord 1.61).

Config: RedHat 5.2, 2.0.36, 64M RAM, Sony CRX100E is secondary slave (hdd).

xcdroast displays the drive and cdrecord -scanbus shows the drive, but when I
go to write, it works for a couple of seconds and then ejects the CDR. I've
included the log message that I'm getting.

I didn't see this particular Sony model listed in the cdrecord and/or
xcdroast compatability list.

Known problem?
Fix? Easy fix?

Thanks.

In ~/.bash_profile, I think (If you're using bash).

You can specify multiple folders in a colon-separated list, like this:
PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/home/bin:/usr/local/bin:/this_dir:/that_dir
etc..

Subject: Ical Equivalent for Win98?

I hate to admit, but I sometimes have to use Winblowz. I absolutely
love Ical for Unix - it does all the things I like in just the right
way. Does anyone know of something which is quite equivalent to Ical
for Windows? Thanks for any info!

Actually, MS doesn't do too badly with "does what I want." The problem is
that they ALSO try to do everything else as well, leading to bloated, slow
and buggy crashware.

Subject: how to mount tmp partition?
Date: Wed, 14 Apr 1999 10:46:29 -0700

I have unsucessfully tried over the last couple of days to mount a tmp
partition. The mount point has drwxrwxrwt permission but once I mount the
partition that changes to drwxr-xr-x which won't do since normal users
don't have write permission. Tried mount with the -w and -o rw switches
(which should be the default) but to no avail. Any suggestions???
Am I missing something? Mount doesn't accept the umask or mode options for
ext2 btw. Thanks,
                         Gerald

Subject: [Q] 2.2 Kernel 100% Reentrant?
Date: 14 Apr 1999 17:02:28 GMT

A kernel FAQ says that the 2.0 kernel isn't 100% reentrant, but it was
being worked on in the 2.1 kernel. Is the 2.2 kernel currently 100%
reentrant, or is it still blocking on some system calls. If it is not,
what is the status of this?
