Google search for "explore2fs". It works with 9x and NT, don't know
about 2K but doubtful. (I tried several HFS-reading utilities for NT on
a 2K box; they refused to see an HFS-floppy. HFS!=ext2fs, but if MS has
changed all their internal filesystem mangling between NT and 2K....)

Anyway, SAMBA is a Unix program, so it is pretty much impossible to run
SAMBA on a computer if you're running 'Doze on that computer. You could
run your 'Doze session in a VMWare box under Linux, but that would
probably not give you exactly what you want in terms of file access.
Heck, explore2fs is not particularly transparent to the end-user, but it
is probably the best thing there is atm.

Would anyone be able to let me know (in general) what I need to do to
setup a serial port so that I can console into a Cisco Router? I have
setup minicom, but no response. I am using a laptop and trying to setup
the external serial port (COM1 - ttys0). The configuration I have works
OK on my windows machine, but I want to get a console session using
Linux Redhat 6.2 on a laptop.

Thanks in advance,

a2ps converts ascii to postscript and has nothing to do with
individual printers. If I remember , the HPII needed a cartridge
to support postscript.

Yeah, now I get on about my problem.

I have two drives on ide1. hda is a 8 gig with w98 and Mandrake 6.1 on it.
hdb is a 20 gig with a LFS system and Mandrake7.0 and i forget what else so
they don't matter much.

ide2 has cd and LS120 floppy on it.

I have installed Ultra ATA/100 PCI and a 40gig on hde, got the kernel
patched and a partition formatted to play with. (hardware is cheap after
Xmas). I have and have read howto's etc for ATA and the Multi Disk howto

Lilo doesn't want to boot directly to hde (duh).

Objective:
keep W98 on hda, anything else need to fit in 3 gig.
move the linux systems to hde (and keep them there for performance).
reformat 8 gig to put in another box.

Questions:
When setting up as you describe, what is the best approach? /, /boot, /etc,
etc on a partition on hda, all kernels on hda, mount over / with other
partitions or just subtrees, that kind of stuff.

How do I tell where my boot record is? It has been a long time, quite a few
things learned and I don't remember where I installed lilo.

Is it possible to disable onboard ide so the ATA/100 is hda, hdb, hdc, hdd?

Does anybody have experience with W98 and ATA/100 in a dual boot system?
W98 hoses the setup trying to do PnP and then I have to unistall
(physically) to get it back to a usable state.

I can unplug power to the drive to prevent W98 from trying to set up and
everything works, what is the color code on the wiring so I can just put in
a switch? (I could just use a 4pole and break everything I guess)

Someone else may be able to tell you exactly what is happening, but....

When I run into this I look in the makefile to see what is in conftest.c,
either modify the makefile to make a copy that survives after the compile
attempt or just type it in myself. Then run the command the makefile tried
to execute (as above) and then fix the problem using the error messages
that you now get that the makefile doesn't show you.

Are you using Red Hat 7.0? I think that gcc was 'broken' in RH 7.0. You
should upgrade your gcc or change the $CC variable to kgcc. I think that
is what most people are saying to do as a solution.

What do these do? Is this telling the script to "include" these files
so you can use function in them? Or is this executing these files?

> # Check that networking is up.
> [ ${NETWORKING} = "no" ] && exit 0

Is this a predefined environment variable or something?

> # Check that fetchmailrc exists.
> [ -s /etc/fetchmailrc ] || exit 0

Are these implied "if" statements? I really must take a class in bash
script or buy a book or something. What does the "-s" do? I thought
you use "-f" to test if the file exists?

What is the purpose of /var/lock/subsys? Is this a list of all running
daemons or something? Why do you use the word "daemon" when executing
the fetchmail program? Doesn't the "-d" tell fetchmail to go into
daemon mode by itself?

> RETVAL=$?

Hmm... kinda cryptic here. What is "$?"? And why just a plain 'echo'
command? That doesn't do anything, does it?

Aw, I think I get it. These call the script iteratively. The "$0" must
be the 1st item of the passed arguments, which must be the name of the
script.

> killproc fetchmail -HUP

What's the difference between 'killproc' and just 'kill?'

Subject: cutting & pasting
From: Steve Connet <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 04:00:11 GMT

Hi...

I am having a difficult time copying and pasting using linux. Say I
copy something by hilighting it, then I want to paste it
somewhere. But that somewhere already has text. So I hilight that text
to delete it. But then that text is now copied thus losing my old
copy.

The copy and paste mechanism seems to make you perform an extra step
of first going to the place you want it to make sure it is empty. Then
go to what you want to copy and hilight it. Then go back to the place
you want it and paste it. Then seems bad to me.

I really don't like the hilight automatically copying something
because of the reasons above. I'd much rather hilight it, then have to
press a key to copy (like Ctrl-C or something). Then go to the place I
want it and be able to hilight the text I *don't* want without it
copying. Press the delete key. Then paste in the text I want.

Is that possible? What are your thoughts?

why don't you ask a Windows newsgroup as this is a Windows problem, not
Linux.

but for the record, did you check the attributes of the C:\windows
directory to see if it was just marked as hidden? Of course the MBR
should have still been able to find the directory even if it was hidden
but it was just an idea.

Sounds like you are using KDE, you would likely get more response in
comp.windows.x.kde.

This is all a matter of what you are used to, I am having some difficulty
learning this behaviour too. But... in the days before Windoze, Lotus 123
performed copies "backward", go where you want to put something, issue copy
command (/c?) go where it comes from, select it, press enter. When I hit
windows, it took _forever_ to unlearn this method, very frustrating.

This actually makes it through mpeg_encode's syntax parser? Or do you
insert the output of the "ls" command directly into the .param file?
I get a syntax error when trying something similar-- it chokes on the
`ls ./stuff*.ppm`, though `ls stuff*.ppm` works well as the program
chdirs to INPUT_DIR before doing the ls.

>END_INPUT
>###################################################
>#other input statement:

>-------------------------------------

The parameter file as given here would encode each image in
./wcimages/2001/01/14/*.jpg as one frame, making the movie 24x faster
than it should be if you want the thing displayed as 1 frame/second. I
suppose you could repeat each image 24 times within the .param file...
Something like:
INPUT
`for i in wcimages/2001/01/14/*.jpg ; do echo $i ; echo $i ; echo $i
[.24x.] ; done` #all on one line, or use \<RETURN> to split a line
INPUT_END

I did something like this (only repeating each frame 3x) on a set of
PPMs and got the expected result. Hope this doesn't come too late to be
of use to you....

Have you tried xfm or tkmc?

Actually the L1 Cache is 1/2 instruction and 1/2 data. so 32KB for data.
I suspect the minimal performance impact of the L2 Cache is because it runs
at the speed of your FSB, ie not internal. So it runs at less than 100 MHz
(or even 66 MHz depending on what
you set your FSB to be) compared to the 350 MHz L1 Cache, thus it has alot
less bandwidth.

The benefits that the L2 SRAM has over your SDRAM is that it has less
latency so there isn't
a very big performance difference. The P2 runs its 512KB L2 cache at 1/2
CPU speed so
its alot faster than that of the K6-2's motherboard cache. If you try a
K6-3 or K6-2+ with internal cache, or a P3 or Thunderbird Athlon, you'll
find that the L2 Cache performance is
much higher given Full CPU speed L2 Cache.

Hope it helps you,
Edmund
