hi all,
I'm using RH5.1 and it came with gtk+-1.0.1 and some other old version
packages after I installed it. My question is if I gonna install the new
version of gtk, do I have to remove the old package first? coz DL the
new version of gtk before and I compiled and installed it..but when I
compile other programs which requires new version of gtk, it says it
can't find the gtk files...can anyone help me on this?
thanx in advance!!!

One thing I miss in RH 5.2 is the awesome foreign language support you get
in Windows 95 or Macintosh OS 8.5 -- that is, the extended keyboard codes
for typing o-umlaut, n-tilde, etc., or the 2-byte character sets employed
by Hanzi, Kanji, Hangul, Arabic, etc.
Can anyone direct me to the FAQ or utility that explains how to set this
up? I can't believe Linux can't/doesn't automatically support its native
language's character set, but it's not obvious how this is achieved.
For example, it's fairly easy to find Japanese JIS fonts (in the TeX
package, for instance), but it's pretty hard to understand how Japanese
kotoeri works under Linux, esp. RH 5.2. The emacs hints in this area seem
very application-oriented, as opposed to system-oriented, in keeping with
emacs' kitchen sink approach. I'd rather see the OS handle kotoeri, the
way Mac does it (for obvious reasons). Any ideas?
TIA,
please reply by email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you can elucidate, because
my ISP frequently loses the thread.

Secure shell (ssh2) can be set to use compression although it encrypts
as well. I am not sure how the performance will be affected overall or

Dear Linux world,
This newbie feel sorry to bother u guys....
I've read the dosemu-HOWTO and some other documentation. My dosemu
install and start ok but the xdos windows just open and then vanish
immediately, time even not enuf for me to read the first several lines
on the Xdos console. Cuz I got LILO and dos can't start? rite? (or not?)
The HOWTO mention the method of first replace the LILO MBR then copy
the MBR to a file and then place it to somewhere and setting up the
partition in dosemu.conf to .... somevariable...
I'm clear about the processes, 1. in how to copy MBR to a file; 2. how
to set the variable in dosemu.conf cuz all the missing stuffs are
replaced by a "?" (partition.hda1?...)
Can somebody point me the way... thank you

Doesn't mean you have a sound driver. CD Player bypasses your sound
card (though in cases soundcard must be configured to initialize sound).
Try:
# cat /dev/sndstat
# dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/audio bs=1024 count=10
# cat /usr/share/sndconfig/sample.au > /dev/audio
The first should provide information on your soundcard, the second will
produce a roughly one-second 'buzz', and the third will be Linus telling
you how to pronounce "leenux".

Not necessary in my experience with the tarfile.

I see. Well, let me be more clear: no, there is no documentation I know
of that describes in detail the differences between SGI smake/pmake in
particular and GNU make, or gives step-by-step instructions for
transitioning.
Similarly, there're no docs that describe in detail the differences
between GNU make and Sun's make, or AIX make, or HP-UX make, or
DG-UX make, or BSD make, or clearmake, or omake, or dmake, or bake, or
cook, or bras, or odin, or...
What we _do_ have is a pretty comprehensive list of features of GNU make
above and beyond traditional make, and also a stab at a list of features
of other makes which don't appear in GNU make, and often some advice on
how to emulate those (or, if you like, how to transition away from
them).
If you combine these lists with your knowledge of SGI's tools it should
be quite straightforward to arrive at an understanding of where the
problem areas lie. If you have specific questions, ask away and we'll
try to help.
If you feel that's not very useful, sorry; that's the best we have.

You have noticed it yourself. The smbfs is for RH5.2 and older samba and
not with the newer samba or newer kernel.
You can d/l the latest samba-2.0.3 WITH smbmount and smbumount on
http://milkyway.thn.htu.se/~ds98rito
BTW make sure to remove the old smbfs before you install the samba-2.0.3

The it should work. D/l LinNeighborhood as well you will not be

Chances are you are over running the buffer whose address immediately
precedes the one that is causing a core dump. The way malloc() works is that
it stores allocation information in the few bytes preceding the address that
it gives to you. So even if you are not corrupting the data you stored, you
may be walking all over the data that free() needs to release the memory,
thereby causing free() to barf. Using a debugger, just before the core dump
print out the this
(int)(*(mybuffer-4)) it should show you the number of bytes that are
allocated, it may be on a four byte boundary though, so expect it to be as
much as 3 bytes more that you requested.

| Amen.

| Given that the original poster was posting from Czechoslovakia in English,
| it seems odd to get replies in French.
Dans ce cas il n'aurait jamais d le crossposter dans
fr.comp.lang.c. Quelqu'un a dit inconsistant ?
[ In which case, he should never have been crossposting to
fr.comp.lang.c. Did you say inconsistent ? ]

| It seems clear to me that replies in languages other then English ought to
| be either:
| 1) Privately emailed
| or 2) posted (exclusively) to groups whose name begins with fr.
Il m'est vident que toute rponse formule dans une langue autre que
le Franais devrait tre :
1) envoye par courriel
2) poste exclusivement dans des groupes dont les noms ne
commencent *pas* par fr.
[ It seems clear to me that replies in languages other than French ought to

1) Privately emailed
or 2) posted (exclusively) to groups whose name does *not* begin
with fr. ]
