Subject: Domain name for private subnet

Hi!

I've recently installed Redhat 6.0 on my PC. However, I am experiencing a
couple of problems with networking - in particular, setting up the domain
name for my machine.

My machine is on a private ethernet network (currently consisting of only
two machines), with an address 192.168.0.1 and netmask 255.255.255.0. It
also has a ppp dial-up connection for accessing the internet proper. When
I installed RH6.0, I set up the domain name as empty, and the hostname as
*just* the host portion, rather than a proper full-qualified name (since I
was using an "empty" domain name).

My rationale behind this was that I didn't want to accidentally chose a
"ficticious" domain name which was the same as a registered name, since
this would cause me problems when doing DNS lookups down the ppp link.

However, this has created a problem whereby my machine stops for a minute
during boot-up (when the networking stuff is being started up). I traced
this to sendmail, which when examining the machine hostname had problems
trying to determine the (absent) domain name, and went to sleep for a
minute.

How should I get around the problem? I can see a couple of possible
solutions:

1) Don't run sendmail :)
2) Choose a ficticious domain name, hoping it won't ever be actually
registered

However, both of these are kinda poor options.

At a fundamental level, this whole problem is about having concurrent name
servers for a private network and the internet, without them clashing.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the best solution is?

Many thanks,

Rich Townsend

PS I know this is a bit of a "bad" request, but I would appreciate it if
any reply could be cc'd to my email address, since my news server tends to
drop messages at random, and in the past I've missed helpfull replies....

For Red Hat (and variants) put it in /etc/rc.d/rc.local

There is _no_ possibility that a problem with "killall -V"
causes some other process to be killed by mistake. With the -V
option killall prints its version message and exits. It does no
other processing. (The -V option must, however, be the only
command line argument or it will be ignored and the other
command line options will determine what action killall takes.)

First of all, they are not being used. Their tasks were given to NT
servers (not my decission), so they are unused. Then, the company
doesn't want to renew the lecenses for the AIX OS .And the current
version is not Y2K compilant (don't ask me how this is possible. This is
what the pointy haired boss has told me).

Well, because we want to install a web server, the obious choice was
Linux + Apache. Instead of buying new machines, I thought those oldies
goldies could do the task, getting a "second youth".

The only time I've seen this was with some EPP chipsets... changing this in
the BIOS to ECP (Zip uses the PS/2 subset) slowed it down a lot, but fixed
the corruption.

This is good to hear. I've been tempted to buy it and try it. I installed
RH 6.0 a few weeks ago and while the install went fine, it did not detect
my perpherials (modem, sound card, network card, scsi). I had to manually
install the network card drivers. It's really not that old of a system,
though it is an Acer....

Better to make it owned by root and in group dip, executable by user and
group, suid root, and put the users who are to be able bring up a ppp

Like this:

Worked fine for me.

It's been a while now, but the only problem I remember having was that I
use my linux box as the gateway between my LAN and the internet and I
had to change my ipfwadm commands to ipchains commands. It was
*supposed* to recognized the old commands, but it didn't. But the man
page had some nice examples, so that wasn't even a big deal.

After you upgrade, check the updates directory on their ftp site (or
mirror).

Apparently, this was only the case in very early verions.

Assuming you are using 'bash' as the shell the changes would go in
/etc/profile or as a new script in /etc/profile.d

/etc/profile looks for files like *.sh in /etc/profile.d and 'includes'
them. The idea is to prevent you from editing a standard file - you can
isolate your changes. Don't forget to 'export' changes to the PATH
variable otherwise it will only exist in the script defining it.

The changes should come into effect if you log out and back in again.
Remember to set the execute flag on your scripts such that any user can
run it - or restrict it to a group of users.

Subject: Storing a partition

Hi there,

I am sitting in front of my Win-Computer which is connected to a small
network with one Linux-Server. Is there any possibility to make a copy
(meaning backup) of the Linux-Partition on my Win-Computer (it has a
tape-drive). Perhaps with tar?
My aim is to get a backup so I can restore the Linux machine when crashed.

Thorsten
