Gramofile is/was an excellent tool for recording off of vinyl to disk. The
homepage has gone AWOL. Does anyone have the scoop on what's up with the
author?

Good thing I had a backup.

Please use it and then see if you still feel the same way.

How can I set my machine up so that any user can sit down in front of
it and log on and get a different personal directory mounted off a
server

it seems that I either have to let them use root to do it themselves or
build a massive fstab to include every user... The has to be a easier
way ! I can't see how to substitute user names in autofs either

Ideas ????

Check my Linux distributions web page:

http://www.rodsbooks.com/distribs/

It includes my reviews of several Linux distributions, links to FTP and
web sites from which you can download it, and links to retailers that sell
both cut-rate and packaged Linux CDs. Unless you have a fast Internet
connection, I recommend you buy a distribution, since it takes the better
part of a day, if not more, to download an entire distribution by v.90
modem. You can get two or three Linux CDs from a cut-rate outfit for under
$10 if you're in the continental US. (There are similar retailers in other
countries, but I don't happen to have any URLs offhand.)

I am having difficulties trying to get the XDMCP Boradcast portion of
Exceed to work with Linux. I can get an xterm to pop up but I would like
to get the whole desktop environment. My Exceed works fine with AIX
machines, I assume I am missing something on the Linux box.

Any help would be appreciated.

Depends on what you meand by "friendly". Many people consider both of
those friendly, especially as they are about the only ones that work on
a simple command line interface. (I do not know if there is any single
person however who finds both friendly).

However, a few others:
pico ( comes with the pine email facility)

nedit

Or more full featured:
WordPerfect
StarOffice

All the above are free. The last three require X to work.

Some of it depends on personal preference

Folks,

I downloaded Netscape Communicator 4.7 Professional from netscape site
and installed it on RH6.1 Linux system for use on intranet.
We also intend to use netscape as IMAP4 client to read e-mail.

How and I centrally configure the preferences for users? I have
looked/searched the netscape site and keep finding references to
netscape.cfg, config.jsc files but there is no mention of how to setup
   them up.

I would like to override (some of the) users preferences with global
   settings.

Where can I find information on on it?

   Thanks in advance.

the problem is still happening... Note that I just suppose the problem is
with iBCS. Any other ideas are welcome...

An X server. Some names are XWin32, Hummingbird, XCeed, PC-XWare.

Another alternative that might work for you is VNC. It is free but you
can only export a complete display, not individual windows like with X.
Check at <http://www.uk.research.att.com/software.html>.

I accidentally removed a couple of libraries (crack among them) so I can't
login because the password cannot be validated.

I followed SuSe's instructions (or at I thought that I had) to make a rescue
disk off the CD ROM. However, when I try to boot off it, the system sees the
disk and then seems to stop dead. The screen is blank with just a blinking
cursor.

Has anyone ever seen this? If so, does anyone know of a fix or some way that I
can login so I can fix this mess?

AFAIK it is also a drive/controller issue, some drives/controllers
don't spin down because of this behaviour, even if the update daemon
has nothing to do, they still access the disk and keep running, others
do not access the disk when there's nothing to do and spin down / keep
quiet.

You can change the flush / sync timings of updated, "man 8 update"

It's an experimental side branch by another author. The author of the
patch believes that Werner will include this feature in the next
release.

> The LSM file says "Updated for disks > 1024 cylinders."
> Does that mean it needs the recent Int13 BIOS extension?

Yes, it requires the bios extensions in order to boot above 1023. It
senses the presence of the bios extensions, and uses them if they are
present.

> Or can it make do without, as Microsoft has figured out how to do?

Microsoft can not boot above 1023. The MS boot-related code is
hard-wired at the beginning of the file system, so the end of the
partition can be well above 1023.

> I think that would require kernel changes, but 21.3 says it only
> requires "Linux 0.99pl12 or newer."

Yah. The code in question is only used at boot time and is not part of
the kernel. The kernel doesn't use the bios after it is running.

I've also written a boot loader, called nuni, which does not use the
bios and does not use the concept of cylinders. It can boot from
anywhere up to 137gb from any IDE drive (hda-hdk). It can be found by
searching on freshmeat.net.

Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000 19:33:51 +0000 (GMT)

I have struggled with a similar problem with my gcc compiler for RedHat
6.1
The compiler had problems to find header files, stdio.h and math.h etc..

For a unknown reason( for me) is some of the header files installed
under /usr/i386-glibc20-linux/include.
I created a link for each header file in the /usr/include directory, and
a link for each file in the
/usr/i386/glibc20-linux/lib in /usr/lib. That sorted out my problem with
the gcc compiler.

Does anyone know why the headerfiles are installed under
/glibc20-linux/include instead of /usr/include ?
