I've been messing with this Webmin thing for the past few hours and I just
love it! It's much more comprehensive than Linuxconf!

Web administration is the future!

For some reason that does not surprise me. I, until somewhat recently,
was on a Sprint/Earthlink account....mail NEVER worked, I used my own
SMTP server for outgoing mail, and often had to telnet into their POP3
and delete messages in order to GET my mail. My news postings, until
about a week before I told them to get fucked, hardly ever made it
out...and I was unable to upload my webpages to their ftp server.

When I told them about these problems, the blamed my box...after I told
them repetedly that theirs was the ONLY server I had these problems
with. I went along for a while, tried all the passive and transfer
types they told me....eventually I had a sys admin friend look at my
box, and try to send something to my website from his...guess what, he
told me to tell them their server was fucked so I did. The person I
talked to supposedly used linux at home and "never had these problems".

Often I was unable to get through because the point of pressence sent me
jibberish or...get this...HTML (happened once, I called tech support and
got some drunk moron who didn't know ... well you get the picture)!!!
But that was when they were sprint. Besides that, they just liked to
periodically change the login script on me without notice.

Earthink is the most seriously fucked ISP you will ever find. Switch
immediately is all I can say.

Now I have a different ISP and I get my mail, can use my website, can
post to newsgroups...I am very happy. Except they also like to send
jibberish in their pop, or change the login script from one to the
other...often times within the same 5 minutes....they have 2 different
ways of doing it and which I get seems to be random. I need to figure
out how to make chat wait for one thing or the other so I don't have to
fuck with that anymore and I would be ok.

SPRYNET is the *BEST* I have ever seen or tried, or heard about. Only
problem, well used to be anyway, id they had MS only software/protocols
for tranfering websites. Now Mindspring bought them and they use
ftp....you even get your own domain like ....
http://user.home.sprynet.com/ which is kinda cool.

Hi. I try to run cadence from Linux system. But I only can set the color
to 8b. otherwise my application - Cadence will tell you it can't handle
16/32 planes. But if I run it w/ 8b colors, the colors are quite
different from what they look like when I run it on a HP-Unix
workstation. so I can't tell some of the colors at all.
So, is there some way to change the color of linux? And also what's the
problem here?

Thanks!

Okay, I tried using "depmod -a 2.0.35" and it still doesn't seem to work.
However, I did notice something. I run SVGATextMode to put me in a usable
resolution since I use text mode often. Anyway, if I do not compile module
support into the kernel stm does _NOT_ work. However, if I do enable
support it works as desired. However, even with module support I still
do not get my network card, PS/2 mouse, parallel port (printer), PPP, or
any other modules. So, I do have module support it seems, but am simply
not properly setting something up for the modules supplied with the kernel
(or so I think).

Any ideas? I'm pretty much stuck with no idea where to go..

Just write a program to dump out a large set of values where each record is
random in relation to one another, but the fields within the records are
related:

STRING  INT_1 INT_2
======= ===== =====
S_04_13    04    13
S_10_99    10    99
..

That way you can see that you are properly handling records going to and
from a table, but can validate the fields within each record.

Here is a little C diddy that demonstrates what I am talking about:

#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <time.h>

#define STRING_SIZE (2 + sizeof(int)*2 + 1 + sizeof(int)*2 + 1)
#define NUMBUF_SIZE (sizeof(int)*2 + 1)

int main(void)
{
    char string[STRING_SIZE];
    char num_buf[NUMBUF_SIZE];
    int num;
    int i;
    int int1, int2;

    srand(time(NULL));

    do
    {
        printf("How many random records: ");
        fgets(num_buf, NUMBUF_SIZE, stdin);
        num = atoi(num_buf);
    } while (0 >= num);

    for (i = 0; i < num; i++)
    {
        int1 = rand();
        int2 = rand();
        sprintf(string, "S_%d_%d", int1, int2);
        printf("%s %d %d\n", string, int1, int2);
    }

    return 0;
}

Hope this helps, Dustin

Hi.

When I instaal software myself on my system, I make an entry in
/etc/group, newgrp to that group and install the software, so I can
see which file belongs to which program.
Bu after newgrp-ing about 10 times I get the following error message:

#newgrp elm
getgroups: Invalid argument
#

So now i cannot newgrp to _any_ other group as root. I couldn't find
anything in the various /var/log files, and it happend on both my
Slackware and my Stampede installations.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance..

I just deinstalled it because it is a memory hog. Ive been using it for
quite some time, but on my P-300 (64MB RAM) LInux behaves like a VERY
slow windows system, and I dont install Linux to get an even slower
system than windows. Its almost impossible to run staroffice (another
memory hog) with KDE. So actually yesterday I changed back to fvwm2.
Perhaps again if a have a computer with 256 MB RAM and 1000 Mhz :)

In article <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Rich Looke wrote:
Rich,

Wow, that's a tall order. Here are a couple comments based on my own
experiences.

First off, I don't think the stardard XFree86 supports any sort of dual
display functionality right now. Check www.xfree86.org. You may be REQUIRED
to run a dual headed version of Xi's X server to take advantage of your card.
I'd also check with them to see if their card has the support you're looking
for.

Further, I think you'll be fairly challenged in finding a motherboard which
supports more than 2 ISA slots these days. Most people buying new ATX
motherboards seem to value 5 PCI slots, 2 ISA, and 1 AGP slot. If you're
building a new machine, then I suspect you don't plan on using a lot of old
legacy hardware in it. Just about anything you might want to plug into such a
board these days will be PCI based, except for cheap PCI cards and possibly an
internal analog modem.

Stay away from PCI modems. It sounds like you're going to have an ISDN
connection in which case you may not need an analog modem anyway. Go to
www.dejanews.com and search comp.os.linux.networking for stuff about ISDN.
When I looked there and in the kernel documentation for ISDN it seemed that
most of the internal ISDN modem support was for European based ISDN.

Here at work we use an ISDN router. It's a Netgear RT328. You plug it into
your ISDN line, and then plug it into your twisted pair ethernet network. Set
it up and you magically have a LAN that's connected via ISDN to whatever is on
the other end. They're pretty affordable too - might make more sense than the
hassle of an ISDN "modem".

I hope this helps a little. It doesn't directly answer your questions, but it
may give you some additional insight on choosing some hardware.

syslogd, new "feature," the default MARKs every 20 minutes.
Look in your /etc/rc.d/rc.M and rc.inet2
change it to

As has already been suggested, you might use Perl. In particular, the
Mail::Internet module (see CPAN if your installation doesn't already
have it) has saved me a *lot* of headache parsing and manipulating
messages.

And no, probably nobody feels like writing something for you. But, as
a hint, you don't really need procmail. Just put two lines in your
~/.forward file: `\username' and `|/the/perl/program'. That will take
care of saving a copy of each message.
