Get egcs instead. All development effort on gcc seems to have switched to
it. You can get it as redhat RPM's.

Hey all:
Will C programs compiled under LINUX run under UNIX? I am asking because
I am developing some CGIs, and I am getting some strange errors when I
transfer them to my Web Server (they run fine under Linux when I access
the Linux server via my internal network). Before I go through a bunch
of dead ends I thought I better find out if the compiled code is
compatible...
TIA.

Because I have no real use for it, and I didn't really like most of the
things about it. It is nice to have system wide drag and drop, but I
don't need KDE for that anyway.

You probably did not compile in paralel support. You can compile it
into the kernel, or as a module.

What numbers in particular are you looking for, on what network

I'm running the same without any trouble. However there is a problem with
certain versions of VNC on RH5.2 This is documented at
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ in the FAQ and requires a change to the
script "/usr/X11R6/bin/vncserver"
If you run "vncserver" and it returns your hostname with a desktop number
":1" (for the first desktop)
Start the Win32 VNCviewer on your NT workstation and enter the hostname (or
IP) followed by the desktop number. "192.168.2.1:1" or "hostname:1"
I've never had to do anything as far as ports are concerned.

WindowMaker is included on the CD, but is not installed by default if you

I took a good careful look at paraport.txt
and realized that /prop/parport didn't exist
finally i discovered a bug in my conf.modules
i had i0= rather than io=
I also did an explicit
modprobe lp and carefully read /var/log/messages
which gave me the clues.
it all works now. On to sound....

That is because it has no access to a domain name server, a server the
translates domain names like www.the-den.com to an actual IP address.
This could be due to (a) you haven't got a ppp/slip connection
setup, or (b) you haven't specified a nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf.
You need to setup the modem to work correctly first, and then
add in the nameserver IP address using the network configuration tool
in your control-panel of RH.
The problem is the same for mail and news as well.

Well, not that allow input and such: most just take the detail files and
mangle them into something easier to grep.
There are a few linked on Livingston's web page. The one I use is a
hack of 'lineparser' that is on theirs (to handle a bit more output, and
some flexibility in the names of some of the fields). [Okay, so it
doesn't look much like the original, but it's a lot faster now. :)]
Here's a simple one:
#!/usr/bin/perl
$/ = "\n\n";
while(<STDIN>) {
print $_ if /$ARGV[0]/;
}
Slightly more complex is the lineparser I use. Combine it with grep and
you should have what you want.
#!/usr/local/bin/perl
#
# handy-dandy RADIUS log parser.... you may want to change the strings to
# match your dictionary, etc.
#
# feed it stdin, or specify detail files on the command line.
#
# yep, it's funny looking, but it's faster than the original
'lineparser'.
$/ = '';

This is because the standard fonts that come with X are pretty much
crap. Try out xfstt(it's a truetype font server), available through
http://www.freshmeat.net (just search for it). These display much more
nicely, and are very scalable. It takes a couple of tricks to get them
running, and it doesn't come with any fonts, but
http://users.skynet.be/micheyva/main.html has plenty there.

The best thing to do is get the latest SAMBA from samba.org and read the
docs. They are very good. Be sure to read ENCRYPTION.txt as it pertains
to Win98.
Also, once you get done. Don't forget to enable your users by using
smbpasswd -e username
Good Luck!
P.S. I have a Samba server with 23 people connected and it runs great!

It's not a Linux problem. Our colors look very different on a Sun workstation
vs. a Silicon Graphics workstation, no matter where you actually run Cadence.
You'll probably want to have separate color display information files for
each monitor type. We use 4.4, and the display.drf file used with a Sun
has the RGB intensities of some colors in the palette turned up so they'll
be seen better on a black background.
With 4.4, you can just copy the appropriate display.drf file into your
working directory before starting Cadence. With 4.3, your default technology
files could have color information set for the at-work monitors, then when
running elsewhere, some Skill code in your .cdsinit file could compile
a small technology file containing a new color pallette for each library.

I'm a fairly new user. I got a ppp connection running and automated via the
ppp-on / ppp-off scripts. One thing I am getting however is that when the
connection is made that a message comes flying from somewhere that I would
like suppressed (as well as maybe understanding where its coming from to
begin with). Example:
Message from syslogd at <day, date, time>...
localhost
To my limited knowledge, nothing I have put in the dial up scripts are
generating messages, so is such a result of the ip-up script or something?
How can I disable this message? Thanks in advance.

If you need a release based on 1.2.x, I've still got Slackware 2.3 around;

If there is any dialog that doesn't have a default action bound to
the return key, it's a bug. Please report it at bugs.kde.org.

Uh... "OK" usually means something very different from "jump to next window".

How quaint. I however like the newest and best hardware... neither of which
Linux supports (read this as the Voodoo3 AGP, the SoundBlaster Live, USB
mice, keyboards and joysticks, dual monitors on two video cards, DVD MPEG
harware playback and last but not least 2 RAID cards. Till linux supports
ALL of these, it is useless to me, plus I cannot play X-Wing Alliance,
Half-Life, Baldur's Gate, European Air War, WW2 Fighters, SDOE, or Combat
Flight Sim on linux...

How very true, however only 5% of those students are using Linux.

See above, and those students are mostly using Linux as a server not as a
workstation or desktop.

Hmm... last time I checked I only know of 3 office suites 2 of which are
available for Windows. I don't want to do everything in EMACS or VI. Sorry I
need to be a LOT more productive than that.

Thats nice if you don't want to run many applications that mean something,
or if you want to keep using yesterday's technology.

Blagh... sure man... and I bet you support OSS too...

I found that using KDE with WindowMaker has proven to be the best
looking and usable combination for myself. I don't notice any sort of
slowness, and the useability of kde along with WindowMaker prove to be a
time saver while still pleasing to the eyes.
my 2 cents.
