I have a Compaq Presario 1277 with a VIA Technologies (model VT82C686)
sound card. I'm running RH6.1. I'm having no luck getting sound out
of it. I ran sndconfig --noprobe and set the address to 0x220, IRQ 5,
DMA 1 and when it played the sample files, nothing. I went ahead and
answered "yes" to acknowledging that I heard them. I thought, perhaps,
I could get SoundStudio to play a file. It starts up, loads a file, but
no sound.

Anyone experience this and have solution(s)?

Please help!

TIA,
chris

I'm brand new to Linux (Mandrake 6.1 with KDE). I have downloaded an app
or two. The install readme files say to run configure, then run make.
Both of those commands return an error msg (something like "command not
recognized" or something....sorry, not on my linux box now). Apparently
I'm missing something??

Also, I realize that the issue of installing linux apps is probably too
large to be answered in a posting such as this. Would anyone be able to
point me to a good website with information for lamers such as me? :)

TIA for any and all help!!

Remember that this same floppy boots (to the "LILO boot:" stage) on
other machines, so it's unlikely that it's bad in that way. And I
formatted a floppy and installed a fresh filesystem on it before copying
the contents of the Slackware boot floppy and replacing the kernel. Then
I reran lilo agin (v21) and the lilo.conf definitely has /dev/fd0 as the
boot device for the install.

So I'm guessing that it's as okay as it's going to get.

| Perhaps you would like to tell LILO to uninstall itself with a "lilo -R
| <device>".

That would be the /dev/fd0, since there's no partition table.

| If you can get it working, I'd like to hear about it. =)

The only thing I can think of is that there's a problem with machines
with more than 1GB RAM. I don't have a pile of those lying around,
although if I can make this work I may have 15.

I haven't heard of a >1GB bug, but this is the first system I've tried
which had the 2GB support enabled. Still, that's in the kernel, not the
LILO part.

Most distressing!

Of course, then you have to deal with all the bugs in tar (cf earlier
discussion of why tar (*) is not a reliable tool for backups).

(*) At leat GNU tar under Linux - and at least as of when I got bitten by it
a few times and stopped using it (about a year and a half ago).

To answer the original question - use netcat, netcat is all you need.
I've done this trick many a time - it is particularly cool to use it for
cloning DOS/Winxx partitions, booting Linux from Tomsroot (on both source
and target).

D'oh, sorry.

I was under the impression that you were posting the error you got if you
were booting unaided by a floppy. :)

BUT, I can refrence you to a helpful site (or maybe not, it says that you
can't install linux except for redhat 6.1 and imoho, RH6.1 is shovelware).
Here! =)

http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Software-RAID-HOWTO-4.html#ss4.11  ->
"The latest official lilo distribution (Version 21) doesn't handle RAID
devices, and thus the kernel cannot be loaded at boot-time from a RAID
device. If you use this version, your /boot filesystem will have to reside
on a non-RAID device. A way to ensure that your system boots no matter what
is, to create similar /boot partitions on all drives in your RAID, that way
the BIOS can always load data from eg. the first drive available. This
requires that you do not boot with a failed disk in your system. "

Now, the million doller question would be, is it possible to use bootmagic
or loadlin to somehow bootstrap Linux into going? Or a ramdisk? Since I
don't see a reason many people would be transferring data from/to a
Netfinity box over floppy disk, the solution might be to simply have it boot
off the floppy (a minidistribution like "Trinux" floppy, but I don't have a
link to that!) and then automagically mount the raid and run the rest from
there.

I guess I am not much help then.... :(

Perhaps in the slack install, you can pass the arguments for the raid and
have it go? My strongpoint isn't raid, but I can do lilo. :\

If you want me to mess, you can send me a netfinity as soon as I purchase
those tickets to a nonextradition country.... ;)

I would definately buy O'Reilly's book: Running Linux for Linux
essentials. I use Caldera OpenLinux and I started by purchasing the book
Caldera Linux Unleashed. It was an excellent book and was detailed in the
areas od server setup. Of course it came with Open Linux 2.3 also.

I have a ne2000 ISA network card.

I could install it manually by

insmod 8390
insmod ne io=0x300 irq=5
ifconfig eth0 [ip] netmask [mask].....

But I don't want to install it manually every time. I wrote a short script
to
configure it. It is not good enough. Could someone tell me how to make
it auto start up in boot process?

I use RH6.1, I have tried to use netconf. But it cause error message.

As far as I can tell, "-M $HOME/man" makes man(1) look in
$HOME/man/man<number>, so perhaps you should move your man
page to $HOME/man/man1/manpage.1, and then run

$ man -M $HOME/man manpage

I am a new to linux. Before I try this, I want some advice.

I have on my machine DOS-WIN; OS/2 Warp 4; and Caldera Open Linux 2.2

I have room for another drive and would like to try out SuSE Linux and "hdb"

Is this possible to have two linux distributions on one machine? OS/2's Boot
Manager is waht I now use as OS/2 is my "production software.

Will the install get confused? Any Advice.

On my distro in /usr/doc/GCC-HOWTO it says:

This document covers how to set up the GNU C compiler and development
libraries under Linux, and gives an overview of compiling, linking,
running and debugging programs under it. Most of the material in it
has been taken from Mitch D'Souza's GCC-FAQ, which it replaces, or the
ELF-HOWTO, which it will eventually largely replace. This is the
first publically released version (despite the version number; that's
an artifact of RCS). Feedback is welcomed.

You can get this document in ASCII form from:

http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/linux/docs/HOWTO/

Or in HTML form from:

http://ftp.linux.org.uk/~barlow/howto/gcc-howto.html

Hope this helps.

Sounds like your only course of action is to put a DOS boot disk in and
do an fdisk /MBR and if this doesn't work I'd try the HD in another

It does have the central arrow keys, and has a klanky 'you know when

Sounds like you don't have the correct permissions (I think it's a kppp but).
As root do:

# chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd

Then find your kppp executable file:

# which kppp
/usr/sbin or wherever it is

If that doesn't find it:

# find -name kppp -print

Go to the directory where it is located and do:

# chmod u+s kppp

Then login as a normal user and have a go.

First don't do it, you may very well lose all of your data, back it up to a
second HD or CD or if need be put all the important stuff on flopies, then
start to clear down and move partitions about etc.

After you've backed all the data up make your boot disk that you're going
to use for the Linux install and make a good DOS boot disk with all the
important stuff on it like fdisk, then format the drive and start from
scratch, install linux, it has options for creating the partitions within
the install procedure (it does on my distro at least).

There's a list of Linux friendly ISPs and info at

You can set the screen resolution in Xfree86. There's a HOWTO called
'XFree86-HOWTO'. I found this in the directory /usr/doc/HOWTO on my
distro.

If you run the configuration without reading about it first it looks
a bit scary in parts, so it may be worth reading the HOWTO carefully
first.

The configure script (which you should run with "./configure") is
(presumably) included in the source code. You have probably not
installed a development environment. That would include such
packages with names like make, libc development, binutils, and so
forth. You may need a bunch more if you are trying to build
graphical programs.

Well, the problem is Linux 2.3.x is unstable and beta. So, unless you
want to hack the kernel code and fix the problem, stick to 2.2.x until
2.3.x is made stable... It will make a world of difference.
