I'm surprised you found any penguins at all in the arctic. They are
exclusively a southern hemisphere bird.

Hi,
Is "lpreset" a safe command (i.e. can it hurt the printer)?
In trying to get the stylus850 to work with gs5.50 (which I'm still
unable to do - what a pain in the butt) this little command has already
saved me 10 boxes of paper and at least three cartridges. Thanks to
whoever wrote it.

Note that the Redhat Extreme Linux is quite out of date by now.
You'd be better off just installing the latest version of your
favorite Linux distribution and installing MPICH or PVM on top of
that. There has been discussion of putting together a new
version of Extreme Linux on the Beowulf mailing list, but that
hasn't been done yet.

We built a Beowulf at school a couple of quarters ago without Extreme.
Used Slackware, downloaded copy of PVM. We installed Slackware on each
machine, then NFS-imported the first computer's /home directory and
copied the first computer's /etc/passwd to each other computer. Crude,
but worked fine. You can do something similar with Extreme and avoid
having to manually install PVM and the other stuff because it comes
pre-installed.
A real slick installation will involve doing a full Extreme install on a
"front-end" box and making the rest of the computers boot diskless to
the front-end. I just pilfered the leavings from a lab upgrade to do
just this. Look for the Beowulf-HOWTO on the net; it's relatively new
and probably not on the Extreme CD.

It might be a variation of this, too.
For example, many places use either a public or private list of
IP addresses that are dialups. SMTP connections from these addresses
are disallowed. As was pointed out, this is a way that the problem
of junk email is being attacked.
Then, there are other possibilities.
The best best is to ask GULF.NET why specifically these messages
are being rejected. We get requests like this every so often
(although we try to keep this down with SMTP errors messages that
are more informative than "access denied"). GULF.NET is the proper
place to address your question because it is (judging from
your message) pompano.pcola.gulf.net that is rejecting the SMTP
traffic.
Most likely, they'll be happy to explain why (although you should
be ready for a suggestion that you change ISPs). If it does turn
out to be that GULF.NET rejects connections from dialups, then the
solution is to (as others have pointed out) pass all your SMTP
traffic via Earthlink's servers. This actually has other advantages
for you as well, so it's a good idea regardless of the problem
with GULF.NET.

I'm currently in RH 5.0, so can't check directly (wouldn't anyhow?)
whether your exact syntax makes a difference (is this the exact
syntax?), but reading my 5.2./2.2x file I have:
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=7
note the missing "=" sign; don't know if this is significant or not.

Hi all,
All is going well with my Linux_mandrake 5.3 after upgrading it

Hi Steve,
DTE (Data Terminal Equipment, or "computer-to-modem") is not a modem's
bottleneck. The only way to use up the 115200bps DTE rate is to download
clear text (so that the modem would use 3-to-1 compression).
You would compress a huge text file before downloading it, right?

It works just fine for me with my AWE64, including MIDI.

Then you have something setup wrong.
Look at /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/AWE32 (despite the name, it
applies to a variety of SB cards).

the 2.0.34 kernel, Slackware 3.5 distribution and quite a few good bits

The actual content of the book is okay, not as good as the first book

1) install esound from the GNOME rpm's
2) install the very latest x11amp (available from their web site: use
the RPM of the CVS'd version).
3) conifgure x11amp to use the esound daemon for output
You'll have to make your other players get along with esound as well.

Subject: How to include lib in configure?
Date: Fri, 09 Apr 1999 17:06:59 +3300
Hello,
Recently I posted a question regarding compiling hello.c
with gcc 2.7 and libc5 while having glibc present.
I finally got it to work.
gcc (2.7.2) hello.c gave:
/usr/lib/crt1.o in functio '_start':
/usr/lib/crt1.o ....ox38 undefined reference to '__setfpucv'
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ox40 undefined reference to 'something'
So this is definitely a lib problem.
The solution was to use:
gcc(2.7.2) -L/usr/i486-linuxlibc1/lib hello.c
And it works.
But as I am trying to get glibc6 to work. I am following
the glibc HOWTO, and because I am having difficulties
I work with Frodo's HOWTO also. (My system is probably in a
mixed state).
The CURRENT PROBLEM is that I want first to compile egcs with
gcc(2.7.2) and libc5. However, with 'configure' I get the same
error mesages as above at the position where conftest.c is compiled.
So, somehow I have to include the 'old' libc5 libs like I did above.
BUT HOW?
By specifying different libs with configure gives me a halt
with "WE ARE NOT CROSSCOMPILING" So this doesn't seem to work.
Is it possible to get the CONFIGURE and MAKE work with
the old libc5 like I did with hello.c. (Note that I have libc6 present)

2. The above command does not work as a drop-in in Netscape (I skip the

Not all mirror sites had it when I wanted to download it. I think I got it
from this place: ftp.wtfo.com.
