Enuf already, I misread their 60MB as 60KB and wondered why anyone
thought that not possible.
As you can see from my responses 89K reference it was a simple
typo/misreading.

As root, run
minicom -s
and go to the
Serial port setup
selection on the displayed menu.
Then use /dev/ttyS0 if your modem is on com1,
or /dev/ttyS1 for com2, etc. Or you can
ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/modem
if your modem is on com1, etc. But then make
sure the "Serial port setup" on minicom -s
is actually pointing to /dev/modem.
By the way, the "File transfer protocols" menu
on minicom -s seems to have a spurious -E switch
on choice D (for the rz download option). Remove
that switch, or rz's don't work.
Actually, I should say that this -E has been
an ongoing problem with Slackware. Maybe other
distributions don't suffer from it. I don't know.

I know that the SOYO EHM mother board has VIA chipset and we have to

Well, first of all, it depends on how your cdrom is set up.
If it's an atapi cdrom, it may already be occupying /hdb.
That is, it's the "slave" device on the first ide controller.
In that case, jumper your new drive as the only drive, and
plug it into the 2nd ide controller. Then it will be /dev/hdc.
Reboot, run fdisk to partition it the way you want, and then
run mke2fs to format the partitions you created with fdisk.
Finally, create some mount points and edit /etc/fstab accordingly.
Now, if there's no second drive on your first ide controller,
then your existing ide drive must be jumpered as the only drive.
Re-jumper it as the master, and jumper your new drive as the
slave. And plug the new drive into the free connecter on
that first cable. Then your new drive will be /dev/hdb
as you expected. Run fdisk and mke2fs as above (but against

has always worked fine for me. You already have cdrecord if you can get
Xcdroast to work, merely adjust the dev= and speed= parameters for your

An LS-120 is really an IDE device, and is recognized as such. You need
the ide-floppy module (standard on every distro I know of) and then you
need to find out which device the LS-120 is connected to. "dmesg |
grep 120" will tell you this info; you'll see something like
hdd: LS-120
which tells you that your LS-120 is on hdd. Then, insert a DOS formatted
LS-120 disk, and enter:
mkdir /mnt/ls120
mount -t vfat /dev/hdd /mnt/ls120
The ide-floppy module should load automatically, but if it doesn't, you
may have to issue a "modprobe ide-floppy" before doing this.
If it works, you can create an /etc/fstab entry so that anyone can mount
and umount an LS-120 disk, like so:
/dev/hdd /mnt/ls120 vfat noauto,user 0 0

Install lilo into the boot record of the linux "/" partition. The

Hi.
I'm having a problem installing Linux RedHat 6.2.
In short, all the installation seems to go fine, but afterwards, when the
system is rebooting, it hangs and says:
In swapper mode.
Kernel Panic: Attempted to kill idle task.
I have tried doing everything again. I've written over LILO by reinstalling
windows (are there any other way to do this?), and reinstalled RedHat. I've
tried to make patitions with Partition Magic first, then install Linux
again, and I've tried to let the installation program take care of all the
partitions. I've even tried to install the partitionless installation, when
you put the linux files onto a FAT32 disk. Every time the same thing
happens. It comes exactly to the same place every time.
Is it possible that there are a hardware conflikt somewhere?
It seems to me that there is something left over from the first installation
that isn't removed by reinstall... Can this be possible?
I've tried to boot from the boot disk, but the exactly same thing happens.
Can anyone help med with this?

I have one 20 gb disk partitioned as follows :
1. /boot, 30 mb, Linux, non-dos, boot partition, set active
2. 2 gb primary dos, fat32, for Windows 2000 install
3. 17 gb, extended : 10 gb for Win2k apps, 7 gb for Linux / and /swap
How do I install two different Linux distributions (e.g. Mandrake and Suse)
and add the two to Lilo menu ? (Note: I don't put lilo on mbr but on a
/boot partition).
Should I create two Linux roots, /root1 and /root2, and use the same /swap ?
Then, I would have to tell each distro to install to /root1 and root2
respectively, then install its lilo on the same /boot, and finally after
the second distro is installed, I would have to manually edit lilo.conf
to point each distro to the right root ?
What's the approach to installing two different distributions and dual
booting them ?

Linux Advisory Watch is a comprehensive newsletter that outlines the
security vulnerabilities that have been announced throughout the week. It
includes pointers to updated packages and descriptions of each
vulnerability.
This week, advisories were released for esound, lprng, sysklogd, xpdf,
imp/horde, mod_rewrite, and catopen(). The vendors include Apache,
Caldera, Mandrake, FreeBSD, and Conectiva. It is critical that you update
all vulnerable packages. Syslogd continues to be a problem on most
systems. Last week, eight vendors released fixes to this problem. Please
refer to last weeks newsletter for additional information on syslogd.
Perhaps one of the more serious advisories released this week is the LPRng
format string vulnerability outlined by Caldera. In the LPRng printer
daemon there is a format bug that could potentially be exploited to gain
root access. This is particularly severe because it can be exercised
remotely.

Generally, *any* unix-program will also run on Linux. I don't know xess,
but http://freshmeat.net/projects/xess/ tells me it is for Linux as well.
I usually use gnuermic for spreadsheets on Linux, tho.

Almost *all* software for Linux is free. If it isn't, you can most likely
find a program of equal quality that *is* free. And Linux does, of course,
come with LaTeX on most installations, as well as LyX (a graphical
front-end to LaTeX).

Subject: Portmap not reading hosts.allow and hosts.deny?

I'm trying to prep a linux box to be an NFS server. The machine is running
Red Hat 6.2, so far with little modification; the kernel, version 2.2.14,
hasn't been tampered with at all.
According to the NFS HOWTO, the first step in getting a semi-secure NFS
server up and running is to make sure portmap is running and behaving
itself. Following the HOWTO's instructions, I ran the strings command on
the portmap executable, to see if the names of the host permissions files
turned up. Both "/etc/hosts.allow" and /etc/hosts.deny" show up in the
executable, so I am assuming I have a version of portmap that uses these
files. In fact, the hosts.deny file has a comment about portmap using the
permissions files.
However, when I put "portmap: ALL" in the hosts.deny file, and then ran
"rpcinfo -p" locally, the list of available RPC programs and ports was
displayed. According to the HOWTO, I should have seen nothing at all,
except maybe an error message. Killing and restarting portmap did not help;
neither did rebooting the machine.
Both /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny are owned by root:root and have
644 permissions.
I'd like to know why portmap is apparently ignoring the permissions files,
or if there is something else I am overlooking. This will be my first time
setting up an NFS server, and I'm being extremely paranoid about it. Thanks
for any help!

If you've run a similar setup and might know why this isn't working,

I have a Mylex Acceleraid 250 working very nicely in a Redhat 6.2

partitions) I installed DOS on the third RAID partition
(/dev/rd/c0d0p3) which I had kept aside for that purpose. I have LILO
configured with:
other=/dev/rd/c0d0p3

When I boot the system from a DOS 6.22 floppy, this partition is seen
fine as C:, and I was able to run "format /s" on it without a problem,
and verify that command.com, msdos.sys, and io.sys appeared. I also
ran "fdisk /dev/rd/c0d0" from Linux and verified that the bootable
flag was set on the partition.
However, when I tell LILO: to boot "dos", it says "Loading dos" and
then complains "Non-system disk or disk error". I'm not sure if this
is a Linux, DOS or bios error causing this...
Thanks for any suggestions...
Rohan.

As other posters have already told you, this is normal. Now
I've got Linux on a laptop that I turn on and off at least twice a
day. Eventually I got fed up with this and increased the maximum
mount count from its default 20 to 100 (or so.)
If you want to do this use the tune2fs tool. Caveat: Read its man
page through before attempting anything.

I've got Linux Mandrake running beside my Win98SE box. They are
connected via a hub. The problem is that it takes over a minute to
connect to the linux box, using either FTP or telnet.
This is a new installation, and I don't think my old installation did
that. I think it connected immediately.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this? It drives me crazy waiting. I can't
even use the Windows FTP program for a quick transfer of something
because it times out before the the linux box responds.
Thanks for any help.
