Gnucash did an "OK" job converting my Quicken accounts (all within a
single file) but required quite a bit of hand-holding in the process,
and several iterations. Gnucash seems to have a fundamental
superiority over Quicken itself in the way Gnucash handles double entry
bookkeeping. However feature-wise it trails Quicken significantly.
I am still keeping one or two win98 partitions on both computers, but I'm
patient. Intuit will probably take a look at unix/linux versions soon.

Subject: problems connecting to a postgresql database via odbc
Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 15:30:05 -0000
Hello,
I'm running postgresql 7.0.3-4, on debian unstable, and I have trouble to
connecting databases via odbc. I use unixodbc 2.0.3-1, and I can see the
data
source in the DataManager, but when I try to connect I get the following
error:
'[unixODBC]Could not connect to the server;
Could not connect to remote socket.'
People have suggested to me that the problem might be that the postmaster
was
not started with the -i option. The only place I could find to do this was
in
the postmaster.init file by setting PGALLOWTCPIP=yes. Is this the correct
way
to do this ?
I've also tried stopping the postmaster and the launching it with
postmaster
-i, but this does not change anything concerning the error message.
Anybody can help me ?

First, scrap Mandrake, it is a piece of junk, from experience(at least
Mandrake 7.1), and it does not upgrade well or easily. Grab the sources
off KDE's web site and edit the configure files in all the directories
replacing the "-O2" flags with "-O3" flags. This will increase
optimization for your processor, which will make it optimized for only
your machine, no older machines can run it now. Now, do a make and make
install on each directory, starting with kdesupport, then kdelibs, then
kdebase and the others. It must be done in that order, b/c kdebase
requires libraries from kdelibs, and kdelibs requires some stuff from
kdesupport. Now it should work better.

Subject: Difficulties with kickstart
Date: 23 Jan 2001 09:51:50 -0600
Hi,
I'm trying to set up kickstart (Redhat 7.0) to run off of a floppy and
get the packages via NFS or HTTP.
My problems are:
1. A kernel panic when installing with NFS or URL (HTTP).
The machines that are athlons and similar things. They all have the
same network cards: Intel Ether Express 10/100. They all have run of
the mill IDE controllers. And kickstart successfully identifies both
the hard drive and the CDROM drive.
So what's my problem? A kernel panic:
Partition check:
hda: hda1 hda2 < hda4 .... hda10 >
VFS: cannot open root device 08:41
kernel panic: unable to mount root fs on 08:41
Note that the install with the RPMS on the CD works fine. However, my
network is not detected (however an ifup eth0 just works)
any ideas???
2. No DHCP requests ever hit my DHCP server.
I've tried, for giggles, a kickstart configuration that goes to the
network. I can't get the thing to ever hit the network.
Again, any ideas?
Thanks,
Soren

An interesting concept; I'll have to try it sometime. (BTW, we're a lab,
running 100Mbit, so don't really need the security or compression.)
Vincent Zweije got me pointed in the direction I needed to go, though.
Adding `xhost +` to /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 let me put up displays without
having to have anybody log in.

Once there is any serious problem in my system, I can boot up my machine

If the default policy for the input chain is reject and there is no
matching rule, the packets will be rejected. You need a rule to match
packets coming from the broadcast address:port with "-j ACCEPT"

If it's stil there, it should be easier than rebuilding the compiler.

Hi, I am running the WebTrends Enterprise Reporting Server on a Debian
system here at work. According to the WebTrends site it is for 'Red
Hat Linux". My feeling is that it is simply a marketing thing. But
the thing is that though it runs fine, it doesn't seem to release the
memory that it uses. Tech support won't help me because the system is
Debian. Personally I think this sucks and wouldn't use it if they
didn't want it so much here at work. But I digress. So this is their
reason. Anyone know if this is valid and there are real differences
between Debian and Red Hat besides the obvious of package management,
etc.? The kernel is the source I got from kernel.org even.
Thanks.
"Bad news, Ken. You are running Debian. I see why you were inquiring
on the marketing thing earlier. I did ask for your benefit as to why.
I am not sure of the specifics, but there is a differenct in the
libraries and kernel configuration between Redhat and Debian. The
fact is, we can't support the install at this point unless it is
switched to Redhat. I apologize for the inconvenience this creates
for you.

Subject: /etc/resolv.conf being overwritten with Red Hat Linux 6.2.3
Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 12:04:20 -0500
I have been running this machine with VA Linux's version of Red Hat
Linux 6.0 for almost a year now, and it works pretty well except for a
few problems that I have bored you with before. But the pile of RPMs I
have installed has started to get too confusing, and some of them seem
incompatible others, and so on, so I decided to start over. Besides,
there is a remote possibility that I was hacked, and doing a fresh
install, and running tripwire before ever connecting to the Internet may
enable me to keep a handle on these things.
BUT I have a big problem connecting to my dial-up ISP. I push the
ModemLights applet to connect, and that runs /usr/sbin/usernetctl ppp0
up to make a connection. This part works. What does not work is that
whenever I connect, it overwrites my /etc/resolv.conf with the addresses
of my ISP's primary and secondary name servers. Since I want the
resolver to use my name server (and have that use the ISP's name server
if necessary), this confuses my name server and nothing works. It is
simple enough to fix /etc/resolv.conf to what I want, but my machine
sometimes connects using a script run by cron, and I cannot be around
for those. Besides, it sucks.
I suppose this is a great feature for those who do not run named (bind)
on their machines, but for me, it is a serious problem. I assume there
is some configuration trick to prevent this from happening, but I have
not figured out what it is. Any ideas?
