Subject: SB16 and isapnp
Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 12:43:49 +1000
Hi All...
I am having trouble getting sound to work correctly on my Redhat 5.2
installation. The symptoms are as follows...
1. When I run sndconfig it goes out and finds my SB16 with all the
correct settings and says it will update the /etc/isapnp.conf file and
the /etc/conf.modules file.
2. It then tries to play a sound and fails saying it is unable to open
the /dev/audio file. I have the checked this file and it looks ok as far
as type and permissions are concerned.
3. The sndconfig program then gives me a chance to do it all manually
but this fails with the same message.
4. When I quit the sndconfig program I find that it has moved the
/etc/conf.modules file to /etc/conf.modules.bak so at my next boot my
network card no longer works (no real problem I just move the file back,
but annoying)
5. After doing all this if I try and play a CD through the sound card no
sound happens.
6. If I run isapnp using the /etc/isapnp.conf file as the argument it
runs ok and then if I try and play a CD through the sound card I get
sound, but of low volume, quality and the mix is out (ie some frequency
ranges are much lower output than others)
7. OK I thought, let me try and re-mix. Well the mixer programs all come
back complaining about not being able to open /dev/mixer - this file
also looks OK...
Has anyone seen anything like this and if so how do I fix it ?
Thanks
Steve

One minor detail: NS3 does not support JScript, it supports JavaScript.
JScript is Micro$haft's attempt to impose their own ideas on an already
established language.
BTW NS 3x Gold's capabilities as a useful tool for creating Web pages is
at best poor. WYSIWYG will never give you the control a text editor
gives you. But for prototyping it could be used if nothing else is
available.

Subject: dial-up problems via PPP
Date: Tue, 20 Apr 1999 19:45:24 -0700
Hello,
Not too long ago I successfully installed RedHat Linux 5.1... which
comes with kernel 2.0.34. I am having problems setting up an internet
connection through PPP. Now, I have HAD this exact same copy of Linux on
the machine before with an internet connection running fine (through
Minicom and PPPD) but I deleted Linux and now decided to reinstall it.
I cannot connect to the internet. At first I tried using Minicom and
PPPD like i always have before but noticed PPPD was generating an error
message because there was no PPP kernel support, so I sucessfully
recompiled the kernel.
Still Minicom doesn't work. no more error messages but it just
dials, asks for login and password but it won't connect. I pick up the
phone to find a dial tone.
I also tried configuring the /etc/ppp/ppp-on script and its components
to function but when I run it it justs makes the modem click (I guess
like an ATZ command). That's it, it won't even dial. it just quits. I
tried to get it to log the messages to the system log but the paths it
wanted didn't exist so I stopped bothering with it.
What can i do? No error messages, it just won't even dial!! My modem
is a SupraExpress 288i PnP. Even though it is a PnP it HAS worked
perfectly before!
Any help would be much appreciated! :)
Thanks,
Bart Trzynadlowski

I have NS 4.51 installed on RH Linux 5.2/kernel 2.2.3. I can start
Netscape up fine, browse the web, look at newgroups, etc. When I get to
a site or click on a link wants to access one of the plugins Netscape
will shutdown completely.
I have the Netscape Default Plugin, Shockwave Flash and Plugger 3.0
plugins installed. I can see this when logged in as a normal user or as
root. Netscape acts the same under either account so that tells me that
access rights isn't the problem.
My sound system is working, I can cat xxx.au/.wav/.mid to /dev/audio and
hear them ok. Any thoughts on where I should begin working on this
problem? TIA.

Why not? It is certainly easier to use for anything that is nontrivial.

Java2 is available for Winodws? Curious: Sun says that the current is

"Real" sims? Goodness. Take a break from the games, boy: they're just
-games-. Ask your local Air Force recruiter for a real simulator.

First, I'd try Star Office. The reason for this is simple - it's free
for home use. If it suits your needs, no need to worry about spending
extra cash. For the same reason, you might also want to get
Wordperfect. Both of these are downloadable, though the SO download
might take a while (it's 80 megs or so).
How much RAM do you have? If it's less than 64 megs, you'll probably
want to get a less "fat" suite like Applixware (available sub-$100
from various online shops).

Backticks aren't the same as system(), you know.

No, it has to do with shell expansion. Your second problem is because
you're pounding the server. Inetd probably killed rcp until it cooled
down. See your logs.

Subject: Problems getting APM to work with 2.2.5
Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 04:30:00 GMT
I've recently tried upgrading to Kernel 2.2.5, but am running into a couple
of problems. I'm running RH5.0, with all the upgrades as per the 2.2
changes doc.
My is with the APM. I am upgrading from 2.0.32. I'm running
this on a PII (ATX motherboard), but for some reason, the "poweroff on
shutdown" feature doesn't work with 2.2.5. Under kernel 2.0.32, it would
automatically poweroff my PC, but 2.2.5 just displays the "System halted"
message. The system is running on an Asus P2B motherboard. Are there any
special things I have to do to get 2.2.5 to auto-powerdown the system?
I've installed the new syslogd and klog daemons, as well as the new sysvinit
toolkit (which has the new halt -p functionality, etc), but they don't seem
to make any differences.
Does anyone know what I can check or do to get my PC to auto-power-off upon
a halt -p or a shutdown -h command?
Thanks!
