yes. By installing the headers, are these in some kind of other
package? I 'make install' to the 3 main ones they mention. Is
there a header.tar.gz or similiar?

Hi,

I've recently installed RedHat 7.1. When I tried to compile ftpd bsd
(0.3.3) it failed! The compiler says there's an undefined reference to
SA_LEN. On all other distribution I've tried (suse 6.3,7.1 RedHat 6.2 7.0)
it worked well. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

thanks in advanced,

Perhaps you are the victim of an inept rootkit with a
non-functional trojaned login program. Can you boot into
single-user mode and take a look at things that way?

Hi to all of you!

Maybe you can help me. I'm stock at the following
point :

- Diskless Linux Client
- Server runs good
- Clients (with ATI RageIIc) are running good
- Clients with SVGA or S3 card don't run

In /var/X11R6/bin/ the link "X" directs to the right
X-Server, XF86_SVGA or XF86_S3. Both of them don't
work in the following way:

I just can't change the resolution to more than
640x480.
It doesn't matter what I'm telling the Clients
with the SVGA or S3 card in the /etc/XF86Config
-File, it doesn't work.

Where do I make a mistake?
Does anyone have an idea?
Would be a great help.
I just need 800x600 with more than 16 colours,
so I would love to have 800x600 with 256 or more
colours.

Thanx in advance,

Michael

The problem seems to be the render extension. Try ./configure -no-xft

Not a bad idea. You really should contribute this back to the pan
developers since pan is under heavy development. Go to
http://pan.rebelbase.com for more info. I've always just used "watch" as
a tag to spot threads I'm interested in more easily, but having them
automatically get dl'ed when updating is a good idea.

The main difference it seemed to make on my RH 6..2 installatin is
that all the X-windows stuff got omitted. Dist partitioning was still
the same - the choices are aute (which wipes the disk) and custom
(which lets you choose the partitioning scheme, keep Windoze
partitions, etc.

If you're setting up a stand alone box, whether dual boot or not you
probably want 'workstation'. This way you'll end up nwith Xfree86 (the
X-term server) installed on your Linux box and only accessable from
the PC's screen & kbd.

If, like me, you're set up a dedicated box and only intend access it
via a LAN with the X-term server hosted on a separate PC then you
should go for a 'server' and (later) add the packages needed for
running X-tetrm applications.

I had a similar problem ... I installed the old disk from my

I think you're in the wrong group. Go to alt.os.linux.sucks and get rid of
your negative energy there, you'll be with friends.
Coming in here and dissing people who have taken time to give others a
hand, telling them they should do it differently instead instead of trying
to learn from them, is real bad style.

You really sound like you don't have a clue and Linux definitely isn't the
right OS for you. Go find an OS where you don't have to know anything about
file permissions, searching, etc. Let us know when you've found it.

You probably have something else wrong here, things worked nicely for me
on a RH 6.1 system with a K6-2 400

As I meant to ask the original poster -

Why install .3 ? it is a development compiler trying to move to 3.0

Most people would be happier with 2.95.2, golly it will even compile a

When I press the 'Install' button, errors are given back:

Then it is not a dependency error. It sounds like you have a munged
package, or one not for your distro, or not for that release of your
distro.

Then it's even easier, given that SuSE are miles better engineers that
RedHat. You ARE using a SuSE rpm, and not a RedHat RPM, right? If not
you ought to be stopped from installing it! Which SuSE are you using?
Is it even binary compatible with the package you are trying
to install?

Windows is a kernel and an operating system. These are not hairs. There
are no distinct distributions of windows with different O/S and the
same kernel and all linux distros differ usually in both. You would
probably get about 40% code overlap between different distros (I did
once calculate the overlaps, when I was evaluating differnt o/s's for
installation in the labs, but I don't have the results still to hand
...). So you can't say "linux".

This is usually abbreviated as
"grep -i idle /usr/src/linux/.config" (you got it wrong).

> Why do computer users either want M$-cartoon-clicking or detailed

They don't. The appropriate vocabulary is the one that makes sense to
use. There are no satisfactory common words for "grep -i" (general? regular
expression patternmatch ignoring case). You wouldn't try and talk about
specialist music using the language of the busdriver on the street, so
don't try and do that here.

What you are complaining about is that an imperative instead of a
declarative instruction was apparently given, but that is not the case.
His instruction expands as "look in /usr/src/linux/.config for the
'idle' string, whatever case it's in".

He said precisely what was appropriate, as it happens. I'd normally
agree with your dislike of imperative versus declaritive styles, but
not in this case.

Well, I usually telecommute 2 days a week using ReflectionX over
a cable modem. I use VNC to connect to my work NT box. But
Friday I needed to start a job from work, let it run, then
connect in from home and finish it. The bad news, the VNC on my
HP totally sux, crashing the clients whenever the mouse pointer
hits the edges (even tho the virtual window size was smaller than
the actual screen size). So I fired up another Xvnc on my Linux
box (I manage the Linux box with Vnc) and that worked as
expected.

I was shocked to see just how much faster than ReflectionX VNC
was. About the only problem I encountered was that the Insert key
wasn't mapped. I don't think I'm going back to ReflectionX.
I use nedit primarily as my editor, and the menu based cut and
paste appears to be very network intensive. It's virtually
unusable over ReflectionX, but almost instantaneous over
VNC.

I simply cannot buy the argument that X is faster. It certainly
is not my experience.
