The e-mail in StarOffice is okay as well if you want GUI.

Explore2FS (http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/Explore2fs.htm) is a
utility to read and write ext2fs filesystems from Windows. You need to
have Administrator privileges to run it in Win2K, and it doesn't provide
seamless access. There's also a regular filesystem driver, available
from http://www.chat.ru/~ashedel/ext2fsnt/. The last time I tried it,
there were dire warnings about the read/write support being
experimental, but those don't appear on the web page any more.

Also check the suexec_log if there is one in case files or directories are
too permissive. CGI or the directory it is in should not have more than
755 permission. If the directory has 775 or 777 permission, it will not
work under suexec (RedHat runs suexec by default and a default umask that
can trip you up).

What command did you use? For example to mount a DOS/Win floppy (assuming
that you have an existing /mnt/floppy dir) would be:

mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

Not sure, but have you looked at VNC (free) which is platform independent
and supports Linux? It can also be accessed from any Java capable web
browser if an OS has no viewer. It is the only way I know to easily
control a Windows box from Linux. It can also run a background X server
in Linux that can be accessed by Win or any other system.

Firstly, as CBB mentioned in his response, you don't mount tapes.

Secondly, to the best of my recollection, the Sony Superstation doesn't
work on Linux. My recollection is that it is essentially the same as the
Aiwa bolt which also doesn't work (which is a shame becuase they were
reasonably-priced drives). I don't know the details, but according to
the knowledgeable people on the Linux-tape mailing list, those devices
have a thin layer of IDE/ATAPI interface pasted on top of some sort of
incompatible tape hardware. The IDE maintainer was apparently never able
to get it working by the time the manufacturer stopped mkaing the
drives.

slocate is the real name linked to the 'locate' command that allows you to
easily look up any file on your system. Very handy for finding files if
you don't know where to start looking. It updates its database of
filenames at about 4 AM every morning.

Maybe your hdc is just overheating. I had a similar problem with lost
interrupts and resets on hdc, my primary Linux drive. I found that that
my computer case was packed with lint in front of the inlet fan. I
cleaned that out and no problems since.

Everything seems to be ok, but

4) I try to query MySQL:

Is there anybody out with an idea ??

i didn't realize that it came preinstalled and tried installing an older

I don't know of any reason PPP would be better than PLIP. In fact when
connecting an old 386, PLIP was much faster than PPP because the old
unbuffered 8250 UART could not cope with speeds beyond 9600 baud, while
PLIP would pass 40KB/s which is much faster than a V.90 modem. Although,
I did have to set the timeout in plip.c longer on the faster box so it
would not timeout waiting for the slow box to respond.

You may be forgetting 'passive' option which you at least need on the
first pppd, so it is still listening when you start the other one.

Hey all! Anyone done anything with RH7.0 yet? Got a few questions for you,
but they can all be summed up in the question "Is it worth it to upgrade?"

RedHat doesn't say on their webpage what kernel version RH7 uses. Anyone
know?

One of their big "selling points" is a "cleaner, faster, more customizable
GNOME desktop and Sawfish window manager". Are there new versions of Gnome
and Sawfish that I'm not aware of, or are they aiming their sales pitch at
non-experienced Linux users?

I've heard nasty rumours that RH6.2 had a bug in the installer. Has anyone
had similar trouble installing/upgrading to RH7?

Any idea what the "power tools" disk is available from mirrors?

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

While your system does do various logging and flushing to disk, you might
see your drive light go on frequently when some program is simply checking
the cdrom to see if anything changed.

For example if you are running Gnome I think it is 'magicdev' that checks
the cdrom. In Settings/Peripherals/CD Properties you can control if or
what it automatically does. KDE may have something similar.
