Isn't there an image of the boot diskette on the CD? Use
"dd" (from linux) or RAWRITE.EXE (from DOS/Windows) to write
it onto your diskette. Both these programs should be on your
system, or at least on the RH CD.

I seen this mentioned several times. But we seem to have got a version
of realplayer (5.0) to run without disabling sound under gnome, with
some glitches. Our difficulty getting it to run didn't seem to depend on
whether or not sound was enabled under gnome.

That format is documented under "Readline Notation"
Bash's emacs-like command line editor is documented under "Readline
Command Names" which runs on for several pages, ending at "HISTORY".
Unfortunately, Bash's vi-like command line editor is not yet
documented. (Enable it with "set -o vi".)
If your manpage wasn't installed correctly, install bash from source, or
try http://judi.greens.org/cgi-bin/dwww?type=runman&location=bash/1

mount -t dos /dev/hdx /mnt/dos
make a directory called dos in /mnt and replace x in hd to what the dos
partition is. Might have to adjust 'dos' to match partition type.

I got the same 'landscape' mode with my SuSE6.1 setup with an Epson
LQ-570 dot matrix printer. I found that the 'raw' option set in the
environment (env PRINTER=raw) forces the printer to print normally but
there is no formatting!

But there are other workstations (made by IBM) which use the PowerPC
architecture. Apple's hardware is the best known, but not the only
system that uses the PowerPC.
One of the problems that prevent the mass production of a PowerPC
based system is the lack of a cheap standard motherboard like in
the Intel world.

It's a convenient party line, but it's not true: the LinuxPPC
distribution contains plenty of example code. No; the real
reason why Be isn't on the Mac platform is because (1) Apple
wouldn't loan engineering resources, and because (2) Be sees
an opportunity in the low-cost PC clone market to displace
Microsoft by manufacturers who don't want to pay the "Windows
Tax."

As posted in some of the other responses, there's options to ksh & bash
that let you change your line-editing keys, i.e.
set -o vi
Or, I always use
export EDITOR=editornamegoeshere
vi, emacs, and probably other common editors can be used for
command-line editing/manipulation. I wonder what it would do if you set
it to perl...

Make a separate partition, not to be used for system files, and format
it
so it will be accessible from dos or windows. vfat would be a good
choice. Then it will be accessible from Linux, and
I think Windows will see it also. I am currently doing this with my
zip drive, and I think I set up my son's computer this way and that it
works.
Of course, as long as you mount a dos or windows partition under
Linux, you will be able to read from it and write to it (as root).
I think it would be dangerous to try to write to a Linux (ext2)
partition from dos or windows.

The way tetex is organized was changed when going from the
version under RH5.* and that under RH6.0. But the new tetex
rpm package does not adequately take care of the changes. If
you install tetex from scratch as part of a new installation,
then all is well. But if you upgrade, you experience the sort
of problem described above although the package does not
complain during the upgrade. You can check if this is the
case by running
rpm -V tetex
If all is well, there will only be one line of output which is
innocuous. Otherwise, you will find all sorts of files are
missing. To solve the problem, use rpm to uninstall ALL
the tetex packages and then reinstall them. You have to
fiddle a bit since this has to be done in the right order. Or
when reinstalling, you can list them all on the command
line, and rpm will get it right.
There is another problem with tetex. It doesn't by default
create some of the typical .fmt files, e.g., amstex, eplain,
and texinfo. However, you can create these by running
(example for amstex)
tex --ini /usr/share/texmf/tex/amstex/config/amstex.ini
This will produce the file amstex.fmt, which should end up
in /usr/share/texmf/web2c
There is also another possible source of problems if the
above does not apply to you. Because of the reorganization,
it is possible that you will have to reset TEXINPUTS to an
appropriate string if you had previously set it. If you had
not previously set it and were using the default, this should
not be the source of your problem.

If there is an entry in /etc/fstab, mount /floppy should work.
Otherwise, try su -c 'mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /floppy'.
Make sure that /floppy exists, that the user option is given in fstab
and that /dev/fd0 exists.

No; his version of patch is old, as previously said in

If his version of patch is _that_ old, chances are his system is
relatively ancient also, and that it's inherently insecure. So, any

Oh yes you are. You seem to think that Be does not make BeOS run on the G3
because they're friends with Intel now, whereas the reality of the situation is
that you can't base a solid business (and Be is still a business, in case you
hadn't realized) on reverse-engineered hardware specs. Be needs cooperation
from the hardware vendor to make sure that they can fully support their
product, and don't get the rug yanked out from under them when those hardware
specs change next month.
Of course Be can make BeOS run on G3s (I'd be suprised if they don't have one
running BeOS in their office somewhere), but it takes a whole lot more to turn
BeOS-on-G3 into a fully supported product that you can base your business on.

Trouble is that when I make the monitor reactivate, the display goes
haywire, behaving as though it doesn't recognise the video card. I can

anything!) and restarting.
It works fine apart from this.
My spec:
Suse 6.1

Any ideas?
PS: It behaves ok in the console ('setterm -powersave') just not X.

Has anyone been able to get gap 3.4.4 to compile on a recent version
of Linux?
I have Linux 2.2.10 (Red Hat 6.0 but an upgraded kernel) running on an
AMD K6-3, with egcs-2.91.66 and glibc-2.1.1 (and libc-5.3.12).
I have the sources for gap 3.4.3 and 3.4.4.
When I try to 'make ibm-i386-linux-gcc2' (the closest target), the
compiler barfs with:
gcc -DSYS_IS_USG -DSYS_HAS_TIME_PROTO -DSYS_HAS_SIG_T=void \
-c system.c -o system.o
system.c:1571: conflicting types for `ioctl'
/usr/include/sys/ioctl.h:42: previous declaration of `ioctl'
system.c: In function `syAnswerCont':
system.c:1608: warning: `return' with a value, in function returning void
system.c: In function `syAnswerTstp':

make[1]: *** [system.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/gap3r4p4/src'
make: *** [ibm-i386-linux-gcc2] Error 2
The error messages are virtually identical with gap 3.4.3.
Also, I have no trouble compiling gap 3.4.3 (haven't tried 3.4.4) on an
Intel P133 with a Linux 2.0.x kernel, gcc 2.7.2.1, and libc-5.3.12.
Although the K6 has a Pentium-compatible architecture, when I run the
gap binary on the K6 machine, it dumps core. I examined an 'strace'
and didn't see any smoking guns. I don't think it is a library problem,
or at least not a linking problem.
Anyone have any ideas?

for a while (say 7 minutes). At the same time if from the beginning I'm
listening to some live real audio, then it sometimes stops as well,
while sometimes DOESN'T!
So I dont understand what is going on. Please, help with your thoughts
