Your problem could be superblock corruption. You can try the appropriate
fsck -b command...

Why my perl process would use 7% of the cpu when 90% is idle?

This process waits for nothing, he have to build a list of words from
text files. The only thing I see is that it takes up to 50% of RAM.

Anybody have an idea of the cause?

Thanks!

There should be no major problems with runtime if you follow the Glibc2
HOWTO. To compile C++ in a glibc environment, you need new libraries.
It might be best to build the compiler and libraries yourself; see
http://egcs.cygnus.com/ for source code.

These should be all right if you follow the Glibc2 HOWTO, also.

Are you talking here about 8i that you have paid for with the technology
tracks? Or free 8i that were available to the first 50,000 (or 5,000??)
registrants via technet?

If you're talking about 8i for the first 50,000 registrants, when exactly did
you receive it? I registered for both NT and Linux, but have not gotten either
one of the two, not even the NT version which came out earlier than then Linux
version.

This is typical. In fact, they've never to my knowledge produced
Realplayer Plus for Linux. They now produce one of the Producer
programs for Linux, and their FAQ says they're working on a G2 player
as well (it would make sense ... if Producer's already out, how hard
can it be to put out the player???) - just not the "plus" player.
Like I care about the "plus" player anyhow ...

anyone knows some tricks to get this to work with an on-board chip, please

Subject: Cant boot off /dev/hdd - Getting bummed...

I received a brand new 10.1GB WD hard drive. Needed it because I
was gonna install Oracle. Oracle needs some breathing room
if ya havent noticed. I have:

hda 4GB WD
hdb 2GB WD
hdc CDROM
hdd 10.1 WD

I am using FreeBSD booteasy as a bootloader.
I get to the fourth (hdd) drive and press (F1 linux) and
get L 01010101.... This is after a fresh install.

hdd1 /boot 16 MB
hdd5 /usr 5000 MB
hdd6 swap 127 MB
hdd7 / 75 MB

I have had the / partition at hdd1 also with no help.
I am at a total loss on how to get Redhat linux 5.2
kernel 2.0.37-0.7 working on this fourth drive (hdd).
I can boot from a floppy and everthing works great.
I have read numerous How-Tos, read multiple new postings,
even read FreeBSD site but I am stumped. I put the /boot
on the first partition based upon some news postings I read
to keep the kernel below 1024th cylinder. I now read in
the Large Disk How-To that these days Large Disks are not
a problem. So.. If this is true, whats my problem?

Subject: SuSE support

In January 99 I bought SuSE 5.3
Few weeks later I'm informed on the web that the release 6.0 is
available.
I decide to buy immediately the new release thanks to the new glibc and
the statement that say:

>"Kernel 2.2-ready": as soon as version 2.2 of the
> Linux kernel becomes available, you can use it by
> just copying it into your installation. Should 2.2.
> be available before SuSE Linux 6.0 will be shipped,
> we'll include it in the distribution.
>
I was hoping that once the new release of the kernel were available to
receive from SuSE all the support to upgrade the kernel.
When I went to the update page of SuSE I was very disappointed to find
that no support was provided. On the contrary I found this statement:

>Kernel 2.2.5 Sources: Please note that we cannot
> provide any installation support for Kernel
> 2.2.x.

Now SuSE is informing that if I want the new kernel I have to buy
SuSE6.1
With great disappointment I have to recognize that Microsoft is much
more serious than SuSE. When some upgrading are available they provide
all the instructions and support!!!!
Of course I know that I can find on the net tons of generic information
on how to upgrade to kernel 2.2.x. But I was hoping that having spent
more than 100 Dollars in few weeks for SuSE-5.3 and SuSE-6.0 to receive
full support from SuSE to update the kernel.

I was hoping to find serious distributors on the Linux word on the
contrary I'm realizing now that Microsoft is not so bad!!

Do you have linux kernel-headers installed? Sometimes the compiled
program needs to have kernel headers to be compiled.
also probably you also needs the developement module (e.g.
libglib-devel-*.*). If you want to be easy, just get hte precompiled
binary.

Subject: Problems compiling the Kernel

Hi.

I recently installed a version of RedHat that came with Kernel 2.0.36.
I'm trying to get my ATAPI Ricoh 6200 burner going, and it was
recommended that I upgrade the kernel. I grabbed 2.2.1, and proceeded to
install it, but have a few minor problems i'd liked fixed:

motherboard not detected - this message pops up...
SoundBlaster 16 (4.16) - i've got an awe64... would like to see it
instead
uart 4.01 bad - ???
sbmpu I/0 port conflict (330) - possibly 388 as specified in win98? 620?
PIIX3: not 100% native mode: will probe IRQ's later - ???

And I have a few questions:

The reason for recompiling was to get SCSI emulation for my ATAPI
CD-RW...ever since I did it I get:

hdc: ATAPI 6x CD-ROM DVD-RAM CDR-RW drive, 1024 cache - good?

scsi: 1 host - good? (for emulation)

Any help with the above would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the update. Basically I just read the www.kde.org main web page. That
is the whole point, I was wondering which one would be the best based on both the
standards they use and the stability of the product. From what I have read so far
in the news group, it appears that both products can be flaky on particular
hardware. I am currently using WindowMaker on a IBM 760E laptop and while it
works fine, I want to check out the other products. My goal is a fully loaded
scientific and software development platform.

Actually I have received 8i for our spark box and my NT machine. I received the one
for the spark about a month ago and just got the one for NT.

Nope! I ordered mine ages ago. I heard that they were shipping, but I still
await.

Independent testing would be nice (this whole thing is in response to
the MSNBC (!) test which showed Linux to be 2x faster), but in fact,
just comparing Samba vs NT file serving, it ought to be possible to do
double-blind testing, which is not common in software. Normally the
benchmarker knows which machine s/he is testing. This way you could
have two servers just called A and B on the network, and provided the
end-user on the client PC just typed
NET USE commands on the client, they should not know if they are talking
to NT or Samba.

ooops
silly me
thanks for all the email suggestions, everybody!

OK here are the things I have tried...

#1 disconnected all harddrives except for linux, and booted off a win98
bootdisk. I then ran 'fdisk /mbr'. This did not solve the problem

#2 set my 12 gig (hdd) to none in bios and booted. Windows loaded fine
which led me to a new train of thought...

(duh! can't have a cdrom as a master to a hardrive in windows-land)

#3 reversed hdd and hdc. Tried cdrom as slave and big fat32 12 gig as
master. Still an error booting into windows.

So now I have a rather big project on my hands. I think windoze is
having difficulty with a linux partition/drive sandwiched between two
fat32 drives. I am going to try making linux the Secondary master and
the cd the secondary slave. THis of course involves editing my
/etc/fstab and my lilo.conf. I hope there isn't anything I am
forgetting to edit, or else I have a long, ugly road ahead of me...

Is the correct bzImage not in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot....
